Invasive alien species (IAS) can affect agricultural ecosystem negatively and critically. The geographical distributions of nine IAS plants in Korean orchards and uplands were investigated. Ambrosia artemisiifolia distributed widely in Korean peninsula and Ambrosia trifida distributed intensively in Gyeonggi-do. Aster pilosus distributed in Gyeonggi-Gangwon region and Lactuca scariola distributed linear region from the north-western to south-eastern part of Korea. Hypochaeris radicata distributed mainly in Jeju-do and Solanum carolinense distributed in eastern Gyeonggi-do. Rumex acetosella and Sicyos angulatus sporadically occurred in Korean croplands and Eupatorium rugosum was found in one region only. The distribution of IAS plants in croplands was very similar to that in non-croplands suggesting that ecological position of arable lands is not different from that of non-arable lands. Therefore, IAS plants in the croplands should be managed for not only prevention of yield reduction, but also protection or maintenance of original ecosystem. Development of management methods apposite to current Korean status are required to control IAS plants in croplands.
Rice stripe virus (RSV) is one of Tenuivirus Group, which is carried by small brown planthopper. There is an outbreak of RSV in South Korea at 20Ot, and 2007. The infection caused by RSV had been investigated on weeds around the rice cultivated areas 13 region and 26 site including Jeonbuk Buan and Chungnam Seocheon. There have a doubt as to alternate host of RSV is total 15 Family and 50 Species including Gramineae 24 species of Duksaepul (Alopecurus aequalis), H. sativum var. vulgare etc.. There is identified the infected RSV in Festuca myuros, Alopecurus aequalis, Hordeum sativum var. vulgare, Trisetum bifidum, Echinochloa crus-galli var. crus-galli, Digitaria ciliaris among this species. Deulmuksae is the overwintering exotic weed which sprout in Autumn and wither in Spring and commonly growed as green manure crop or cover crop. In order to identify the infection rate furthermore, 111 samples which were collected at Buan Gyehwa-myeon region, and 50 samples from Seocheon Maseo-myeon in June, 2008, were ELISA tested. The results are 32 positives from Buan, 28.8% infection rate, 8 positives from Seocheon 16.0% infection rate. RSV infection of Deulmuksae is not reported currently, and follow report first describes the Deulmuksae as an alternate host of RSV.
This study was conducted to investigate the weed occurrence and distribution on the upland crop fields (garlic, barley, potato, maize, red pepper, soybean and Chinese cabbage) at 795 sites in Chungbuk province of Korea from Apr. to Oct. in 2014. From the result of this survey, 188 weed species in 42 families were identified and classified to 96 annuals, 40 biennials and 52 perennials. Based on the occurrence ratio, the most dominant weed species in Chungbuk province upland crop fields were higher in the order of Portulaca oleracea (8.14%), Digitaria ciliaris (6.72%), Echinochloa crus-galli (6.55%), Rorippa palustris (6.00%) and Chenopodium album (5.89%). The composition of major occurred weed families, Compositae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae and Cruciferae were 19, 10, 7 and 6%, respectively. In the winter upland crop fields, the dominant weeds were in the order of Capsella bursa-pastoris (12.36%), Alopecurus aequalis (11.05%) and Stellaria alsine (8.42%). In the summer upland crop fields, the dominant weeds were in the order of Portulaca oleracea (8.58%), Digitaria ciliaris (7.18%) and Rorippa palustris (6.28%). Fiftythree exotic weed species were identified. The results of this study could be useful information for estimation of future weed occurrence, weed population dynamics and establishment of weed control methods on the upland crop fields in Chungbuk province of Korea.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate fish metric attributes using a model of Lentic Ecosystem Health Assessment (LEHA) and apply the model to the dataset sampled from six sites of Namyang Reservoir during October 2005$\sim$May 2006. The model was composed of 11 metries and the metric attributes were made of physical, chemical and biological parameters. Trophic composition's metrics showed that tolerant species ($M_3$, 80%) and omnivore species ($M_4$, 92%) dominated the fish fauna, indicating a biological degradation in the aquatic ecosystem. The metric of $M_7$, relative proportions of exotic species, also showed greater than 8% of the total, indicating a ecological disturbance. The average value of LEHA model was 24.3 (n= 12) in the reservoir, indicating a "poor condition" by the criteria of An and Han (2007). Spatial variation based on the model values was low (range: $21{\sim}26$), and temporal variation occurred due to a monsoon rainfall. Electrical conductivity (EC) and tropic state index of chlorophyll-$\alpha$ [TSI(CHL)] was greater in the premonsoon than the postmonsoon.
To figure out the vegetation situation in the ridge of the Naknam-Jeongmaek, six intensive survey sites were selected considering environmental factors and human interferences, 132 quadrats (area $100m^2$) were installed to survey appearing species of trees and major environmental factors, and the characteristics of vegetation structures were analyzed. The surveyed plots were divided into six groups according to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN; Quercus mongolica-Q. variabilis community, Pinus densiflora-Q. dentata community, Chamaecyparis obtusa community, Q. mongolica-P. densiflora community, P. densiflora-P. thunbergii community, P. koraiensis community, Rhododendron spp.-Lespedeza cyrtobotrya community. P. densiflora-Q. dentata community, Q. mongolica-P. densiflora community, and P. densiflora-P. thunbergii community are expected to be succeeded by deciduous oaks because the power of deciduous oaks is strong in their lower layer. C. obtusa community, P. densiflora community, and Rhododendron spp.-L.cyrtobotrya community are artificial forests that were artificially formed and are expected to be maintained in the current state for some time because the dominance value of planted species of trees is high. Most vegetations in Naknam-Jeongmaek were secondary forests or artificial forests formed for forest tree production and forestation for erosion control. In particular the top regions and hilly sections of the mountain were mostly dominated by deciduous oaks such as Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis showed some P. densiflora community competing with deciduous oaks. On the other hand, low sections and regions adjacent to the city showed severe artificial interference since exotic species such as P. thunbergiil, C. obtusa, P. koraiensis, and Rhododendron spp. were planted.
The weed flora in the mulberry fields were investigated in Suwon, Jeonju, and Buan in May, July, and September of 2014. The objectives of this study were to use the survey data for establishing weed control methods and to bring awareness of possible problematic weeds in the Korean mulberry fields. The survey was conducted in 53 regions, covering approximately $145,925m^2$. Altogether 153 weed species of 37 families were identified, of which 68 were annual, 39 species were biennial and 46 were perennial. The dominance was the highest with Digitaria ciliaris followed by Erigeron annuus, Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crus-galli var.crus-galli, Acalypha australis, Commelina communis etc. Exotic weeds presented 44 species with 28.8% of a total presence, of which Erigeron annuus was the highest, followed by Chenopodium album, Phytolacca americana, Conyza canadensis, Oxalis corymbosa etc. Especially, we should aware Senecio vulgaris, not controlled with glufosinate ammonium SL in the Korean mulberry fields because it was known as atrazine resistance in US, Canada, Germany etc. In the PCA plot, weeds presented in the mulberry fields were divided into two groups, Eclipta prostrata community and Stellaria aquatic community and weed flora of Suwon and Buan were different due to those only presented in Suwon.
The term mycoherbicide started in 1970, but its interest heightened due to increase costs of chemical herbicides. A classical biocontrol agent is expected to become a permanent part of its new environment and do no harm to it. Contemporary biological control agent(BCA) must be produced by artificial culture and could be applied like chemical herbicides over weeds. BCA is different from the classical approach in that it released through natural spread. To date 26 species of fungi are used as classical BCA against 26 species of weeds in seven countries. There are a number of examples of pathogens attacking non-target plants. But through risk assessments which include understanding the taxonomy, biology and ecology, the target and non-target species, it will be safe to introduce of exotic pathogens to control weeds. But pathogens have not been successfully used in practice. Many mycoherbicides show potential in laboratories, but are ineffective in the field and not consistent from year to year or field to field. There is also a lack of understanding humidity, dew formation and temperature and their effects on suppression of weeds by plant pathogens. Potential pathogen must be selected as a BCA. Previous studies suggest that these pathogens must (1) produce abundant and durable inoculum in artifical culture, (2) be genetically stable and weed specific and (3) kill weeds in control. A granular preparation of mycoherbicide into sodium alginate is lighter than liquids and less bulky than organic matter. Gel forms have also been used.
Trial and demonslative reforestations were planted by Korea German Management Project at Ulju district in 1976. The follow results that were investigated at spring time in 1977 showed the different situation of winter damage according to site condition and species. 1. Picea abies was completely dried out in this district and its reason was to be thought as a winter damage by cold-dry wind. 2. Cryptomeria japonica was seriously damaged in comparing with Chamaecyparis obtusa and very seriously damaged on the wind-exposured site. So these species are also unsuitable species like Picea abies in this district. 3. The resistance ranking to winter dry wind damage were Picea, Cryptomeria, Chamaecyparis, ${\times}$ Pinus rigitaeda. Pinus rigida, Larix leptolepis and Alnus hirsuta. The falling leave species like larch in this district during winter were thought in necessary to select as the planting species for almost very little winter damage. 4. ${\times}$ Pinus rigitaeda to be showed as a suitable species in this district were also seriously damaged on exposured site and, Pinus rigida and Larix were also attacked with small damage. The potassium-phosphorus fertilizer dressing plots had a trend to reduce this winter damage until some level. 5. The winter climate can be devided into 10 zone in order to evaluate the right or wrong of suitable on the exotic species. The Yongnam region in eastern side of Sobaik mountain are far drier than the Honam region in western side of Sobaik mountain during winter time. Picea abies, Cryptomeria and Chamaecyparis originated in the high humidity winter climate are to be thought to be more suitable in the Honam region than the Yongnam region. Specially the suitable site of Picea abies should be only found in the region with high humidity and much precipitation except the Yongnam region.
In order to solve the taxonomic problems of the genus Juniperus growing in South Korea, an identification key of the genus and species was developed bayed un flower structure, cane and seed shape, branching habit, tree form, leaf characteristics etc. of the 7 native species and the a exotic cultivars. The typical pattern of karyotype found by chromosome analysis of the species was used for the identification among morphologically similar species. The length of chromosome were ranged $9{\sim}15{\mu}m$ in all studied specie. J. chinensis, var. procumbens, and var. kaizuka sere tetraploid, 4n=44, var. globosa, var. procumbens, var. horizontalis, J. virginiada, J. rigida, J. rigida var. longicarpa, and J. coreana were diploid, 2n=22. The species in the Sabina section showed large variation in the length of chromosome and kinetochore position. The species in the Oxycedrus section showed the cytological characteristics that the 11th chromosome t-type(acrocentric), and the m-type abundant chromosome set was relatively uniform as compared to those of the Sabina section. The species in the Sabina section, which are planted in the large city area, show great morphological variation because many different ecotypes were mixed and often crossed among them. In summary, this study was able to make clear identification and to find out similarity among Juniperus, species by the morphological and cytological analysis.
