  • In this paper, combustion characteristics and engine performance varying with blending rate of fish oil using five test fuels, e.g.pure diesel oil and four types of sardine-oil-blended diesel oils, their blending rates by weight being 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% respectively, and operating condition of engine, were investigated experimentally both in the constant volume combustion bomb and in the engine. The results are summarized as follows: 1) In the bomb, the influence of temperature on ignition delay of sardine-oil-blended diesel oils was larger than that of pure diesel oil, and it tended to increase as the blending rate of fish oil increase sardine-oil-blended diesel oils. As far as the influence of pressure on ignition delay concerns, there was no significant difference with all the test fuels. 2) In the engine, the ignition delay of fish-oil- blended diesel oils was longer than that of pure diesel oil, and it tended to increase as the blending rate increases. In the bomb, the ignition delay in high temperature showed no significant difference between with pure diesel oil and with fish-oil-blended diesel oils, and it was especially short with 60% fish-oil-blended diesel oil. In low temperature, however, the delay became longer as the blending rate increase. 3) The combustion duration was shorter with fish-oil-blended diesel oils than with pure diesel oil and it became a little shorter as the blending rate increases. 4) The rate of fuel consumption showed no significant difference between with fish-oil-blended diesel oils and with prue diesel oil, although calorific value of fish oil was lower than that of diesel oil. 5) Smoke density in exhaust gas was lower with fish-oil-blended diesel oils than with pure diesel oil and the higher the blending rate was, the lower the smoke density became.

  • this paper the acoustic signature from a supersonic nozzle is measured and compared to the result of a program developed for a gas turbine noise prediction. In order to measure the jet Mach Number, the pressure and temperature at the settling chamber was measured along with pressures from a pitot-tube placed near the exit. The results are also compared to the ones obtained with a shadow graph technique. Jet noise produced by an imperfectly expanded jet contains shock associated noise, which consist of broadband noise and screech tone noise. For subsonic condition, the directivity is dominant to the downstream direction due to turbulence mixing noise. For supersonic conditions, however, the directivity is dominant toward upstream direction due to shock associated noise. The comparison with a jet exhaust noise prediction code shows good agreement at supersonic conditions but needs to be improved at subsonic speeds.

  • Dual fuel engines are suitable for stricter regulations as they significantly decrease exhaust gas output. Hence, research and development of double wall bellows for dual fuel engines is important. In this study, optimum forming methods and welding conditions were derived to develop double wall bellows made of austenite stainless steel. The reliability of the prototypes was ensured by various performance evaluations. In this study, the buckling load and bellows stress were obtained by structural design, buckling, and stress analysis to design optimum bellows. As a result, the buckling load in the embossing shape of bellows increased by approximately 1.6 times, and no buckling and squirming occurred at 30.0 bar, which was twice that of the maximum design pressure.

  • A pneumatic control valve performs a major role in controlling the flow of a system or the level of a key tank in many power plants, and its performance should be guaranteed during the plant's lifetime. Its operation starts by supplying air to the pneumatic actuator or by exhausting the air from the actuator. To control the valve position, the amount of air supply or exhaust is adjusted by a control loop where various accessaries are equipped. In this paper, air leakage in the air supply line, changes in the valve packing force, and false adjustments of zero and the span of the positioner are simulated and analyzed using a 2-in pneumatic valve with a position control loop including an I/P converter and positioner, where the valve position is controlled within ${\pm}2%$ of the control pressure at 67% opening position.

  • The honeycomb adsorbent was prepared for adsorbing and seadsorbent was prepared by using zeolite sheet, which contained zeolite as component. The steady-state adsorption properties and surface morphologies were analyzed and breakthrough characteristics were ananlyzed by providing 16% carbon dioxide mixed gas. By thermal regeneration, carbon dioxide concentration properties were analyzed, and the adsorptive separation process was compared between thermal swing adsorption and pressure swing adsorption after adsorbent temperature change during heating. The breakthrough results of the honeycomb showed possibility parating carbon dioxide from combustion exhaust gas, which had deep impact on climate change, and the characteristics of the adsorbent were studied. Na-X zeolite was coated on a honeycomb prepared with ceramic sheet or active carbon sheet so that the two honycomb can be used at high temperature. Third honeycomb of rotary adsorptive concentration process.

  • Nitric oxide(NO) reduction by methanol was investigated over $La_2O_3$ catalysts in the presence and absence of oxygen. In the absence of $O_2$, $CH_3OH$ reduced NO to both $N_2$ and $N_2O$, with selectivity to $N_2$ formation decreasing from 81-88% at 623K to 47-71% at 723 K. With 1.2% $O_2$ in the feed, the rates were 4-8 times higher, but the selectivity to $N_2$ dropped from 50% at 623 K to 9% at 723 K. The specific activities with $La_2O_3$ for this reaction were higher than those for other reductants; for example, at 773 K with hydrogen a specific activity of $34\;{\mu}mol\;NO/sec{\cdot}m^2$ was obtained whereas that for methanol was $638\;{\mu}mol\;NO/sec{\cdot}m^2$. The Arrhenius plots were linear under differential reaction conditions, and the apparant activation energy was consistantly near 15 kcal/mol with $CH_3OH$. Linear partial pressure dependencies based on a power rate law were obtained and showed a near-zero order in $CH_3OH$ and a near-first order in $H_2$.

  • In this study, the numbers, sizes of particles from a single cylinder direct injection spark-ignition (DISI) engine fuelled with gasoline and LPG are examined over a wide range of engine operating conditions. Tests are conducted with various engine loads (2~10bar of IMEP) and fuel injection pressures (60, 90, and 120 bar) at the engine speed of 1,500 rpm. Particles are sampled directly from the exhaust pipe using rotating disk thermodiluter. The size distributions are measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and the particle number concentrations are measured using a condensation particle counter (CPC). The results show that maximum brake torque (MBT) timing for LPG fuel is less sensitive to engine load and its combustion stability is also better than that for gasoline fuel. The total particle number concentration for LPG was lower by a factor of 100 compared to the results of gasoline emission due to the good vaporization characteristic of LPG. Test result presents that LPG for direct injection spark ignition engine help the particle emission level to reduce.

  • The process simulations are made on the IGCC power plant using heavy residue oil from refinery process. In order to model combined power block of IGCC, the present study employs the gas turbine of MS7001FA model integrated with ASU (Air Separation Unit), and considers the air extraction from gas turbine and the combustor dilution by returned nitrogen from ASU. The exhaust gas energy of gas turbine is recovered through the bottoming cycle with triple pressure HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator). Clean syngas fuel of the gas turbine is assumed to be produced through Shell gasification of Visbreaker residue oil and Sulfinol-SCOT-Claus gas cleanup processes. The process optimization results show that the best efficiency of IGCC plant is achieved at 20% air extraction condition in the case without nitrogen dilution of gas turbine combustor find at the 40% with nitrogen dilution. Nitrogen dilution of combustor has very favorable and remarkable effect in reducing NOx emission level, while shifting the operation point of gas turbine to near surge point.

  • A swirler is a flame holding device generating recirculation regions in a gas turbine combustor, and the flow pattern due to a swirler has major effects on the flame distributions, combustion efficiency, and characteristics of exhaust gas. An experimental study for a counter-rotating swirler has been conducted to find out effects of the mass flow rate ratio of the inner/outer swirler flow area, the pressure difference between the swirler inlet and outlet, and the flare exit length ratio on the flow patterns in a model combustion chamber by using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique.

  • Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization has decided to reinforce the NOx emission standards for ships passing an ECA(Emission Control Area) with Tier III standards from January 1, 2016. In this study, real-time measurements of the exhaust gas, cylinder pressure and fuel consumption were conducted at each load of a T/S Hanbada main engine of Korea Maritime and Ocean University, which is controlled by single injection and double post injection for reducing NOx emissions. The results showed that the quantity of CO2 and NOx increased in proportion to the engine load, whereas the CO concentration was inversely proportional to the engine load. In addition, double post injection decreased 10 % of P-max and reduced 25~30 % of the NOx emissions compared to single injection, whereas there was a trade-off relation, such as increase 3~5 % of SFOC (Specific Fuel Oil Consumption).
