A 5∼12m thick tideland has been created in front of a new sea-dyke due to the rapid sedimentation occurring for 22 years. It is confirmed from theoretical analysis and soil tests that the deposit is in under-consolidation state. An analysis shows that when the average sedimentation rate is over 1-5cm/year for a soil with $c_v$=0.0005-0.001$cm^2$/s, excess pore water pressure exists in the deposit. It is known that the lower sedimentation rate than average in the initial deposition stage results in lower dissipation of excess pore pressure and vice versa. It is emphasized that under-consolidation behavior should be taken account in settlement analysis because structures founded on such deposits give higher settlements.
The Burnable Poison (BP) is very important for all Light Water Reactors in order to hold-down the initial excess reactivity and to control power peaking. The use of BP is even more essential as the excess reactivity increases significantly with a longer operation cycle. In this paper a feasibility study was conducted in order to investigate the benefits of a new combinational BP concept designed for 24-month cycle PWR core. The reference designs in this study are based on the two Korean fuel assemblies; 17 × 17 Westinghouse (WH) design and 16 × 16 Combustion Engineering (CE) design. A modification was done on these two designs to extend their cycle length from 18 months into 24 months. DeCART2D-MASTER code system was used to perform assembly and core calculations for both designs. A preliminary test was conducted in order to choose the best BP suitable for 24-month as a representative for single BP concept. The comparison between the results of two concepts (combinational BP concept and single BP concept) showed that the combinational BP concept can replace the single BP concept with better performance on holding down the initial excess reactivity without violating the design limitations.

Licorice is a perennial herb belonging to the legume family that mainly grows in northeastern China, Mongolia, Siberia, and other regions. It is used in traditional medicine in the form of dried roots in the East and the West. The main active component of licorice, glycyrrhizin, is known to produce mineralocorticoid effects when consumed chronically, which can lead to apparent mineralocorticoid excess syndrome. Herein, we present the case of a 72-year-old woman who was admitted to the emergency room with severe generalized weakness and difficulty keeping her neck upright, which had developed after daily consumption of licorice-infused water for the past 2 months. Blood tests revealed metabolic alkalosis and severe hypokalemia, and an electrocardiogram showed ventricular bigeminy. The patient was treated with daily potassium and spironolactone supplements, leading to a significant improvement in muscle strength after a week. One week later, the patient was discharged, showing rare ventricular premature contractions on electrocardiography, but with no specific complaints. Chronic licorice ingestion leading to hypokalemia and muscle weakness can be life-threatening, necessitating the discontinuation of the causative agent, close monitoring, and cautious supplementation of potassium and spironolactone as treatment.

The study purpose was to examine an effect of zero emission of excess sludge on biological reactor and treated water quality within the biological reactor in the process of biological treatment combined with excess sludge reduction system with ozone. Under an ozone injection rate 0.03 g $O_3/g$ SS, Sludge Disintegration Number (SDN) 3 and less than pH 4 as pre-treatment process, it was possible to maintain a stable biological treatment process without sludge disintegration. In the test of $OUR_{max}$, of sludge, its value was hardly under the condition of ozone injection rate 0.03 g $O_3/g$ SS. There were almost no changes of MLVSS/MLSS within biological reactor followed by a solubilization of excess sludge. Accumulation of microorganism within biological reactor was also not observed. After solubilization of excess sludge, an increase for organic matter and SS concentrations of an effluent was not observed and T-N concentration was reduced by increasing nitrification and denitrification rate within biological reactor. Most of T-P was not removed by zero emission of excess sludge and was leaked by being included in effluents.

Selective catalytic reduction of nitric oxide by methane in the presence of excess oxygen was investigated over copper and cobalt ion-exchanged ZSM-5 zeolites. Copper ion-exchanged ZSM-5(Cu-ZSM-5) has the limitations for commercial applications to lean-bum gasoline and diesel engines due to low thermal stability and resistance to water vapor and sulfur dioxide. But cobalt ion-exchanged ESM-5(Co-ZSM-5) is more active at high temperatures and also stable to water vapor and sulfur dioxide for catalytic reduction of nitric oxide by methane. The catalytic activity of Cu-ZSM-5 for NO reduction increases with increasing temperatures, reaches the maximum conversion of 23.0% at 350\"C. and then decreases with higher temperatures. In the meantime catalytic activities of Co-ZSM-5 show the maximum conversion of 25.8% at $500^{\circ}C$ Therefore Co-ZSM-5 catalysts have higher thermal stability at high temperatures. Catalytic activities of both zeolites were remarkably enhanced with the existence of oxygen in the exhaust. It is noted that the catalytic activity of Cu-ZSM-5 decreases with the increasing concentration of methane while the catalytic activity of Co-ZSM-5 decreases with increasing contents of methane in the exhaust. This may imply the existence of different paths of NO reduction by methane in the presence of excess oxygen fur Cu-ZSM-5 and Co-ZSM-5 catalysts. For binary metal ionexchanged ZSM-5, the primary ion-exchanged metal may be masked by secondary ion-exchanged component, which plays the important role for catalytic activities of binary metal ion-exchanged ZSM-5, Therefore CuCo-ZSM-5 catalysts show the similar volcano-shaped curves to Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts between the activity and temperature. It Is interesting that the activities of CoCu-ZSM-5 catalysts indicate almost no dependence on the concentration of methane in the exhaust.aust.

In this research, recovery of high quality organics from excess activated sludge and its potential as a external carbon sources for BNR process was studied. By simultaneous treatment of alkali and ozone, TSS concentration was reduced by 32%, and RBDCOD fraction was increased by 76.2%, and major constitute of produced organic were acetic acid and propionic acid. Also, nitrogen and phosphorus were greatly solubilized. However, because acid-hydrolyzable phosphorus(AHP) was major part of solubilized phosphorus, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $PO_4{^3}-P$ concentration were insufficient for effective formation of crystal like as MAP(Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate) and hydroxyapatite. By placing BPR reactor before alkali-ozone treatment reactor, $PO_4{^3}-P$ concentration in pretreated sludge was increased by 1.8 times, and improved potential of phosphorus recovery by crystallization. In experiment of crystallization, hydroxyapatite formation was more easily applied than MAP. By hydroxyapatite formation, $SCOD/PO_4-P$ ratio was greatly increased from 32.7 at control to 141.9 at $Ca^{2+}/PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ mole ratio of 2.4. The results based on this study indicated that the proposed system configuration has potential to reduce the excess sludge production, to recover phosphorus in usable forms as well as utilize organics as a external carbon source in BNR process.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical risk according to the applicator heterogeneity, mislocation, and tissue heterogeneity correction through a dose verification program during brachytherapy of cervical cancer. We performed image processing with MATLAB on images acquired with CT simulator. The source was modeled and stochiometric calibration and Monte-Carlo algorithm were applied based on dwell time and location to calculate the dose, and the secondary cancer risk was evaluated in the dose verification program. The result calculated by correcting for applicator and tissue heterogeneity showed a maximum dose of about 25% higher. In the bladder, the difference in excess absolute risk according to the heterogeneity correction was not significant. In the rectum, the difference in excess absolute risk was lower than that calculated by correcting applicator and tissue heterogeneity compared to the water-based calculation. In the femur, the water-based calculation result was the lowest, and the result calculated by correcting the applicator and tissue heterogeneity was 10% higher. A maximum of 14% dose difference occurred when the applicator mislocation was 20 mm in the Z-axis. In a future study, it is expected that a system that can independently verify the treatment plan can be developed by automating the interface between the treatment planning system and the dose verification program.
During earthquake, force components acting on quay walls consist of inertia force, earth pressure and water pressure. The earth pressure is largely influenced by the backfill condition such as soil density and the installation of gravel backfill. Therefore, shaking table tests were performed by using four different model sections, which were designed by varying the soil density and the backfill materials. The magnitude and the phase of force components acting on quay wall were analyzed. Test results showed that the gravel backfill and the soil compaction were effective to reduce the excess pore pressure in backfill and the magnitude and phase of backfill thrust were much influenced by the excess pore pressure in backfill. When the input acceleration was 0.10g, the average ratios of the inertia force, the front dynamic water force and the thrust to the total force were $64\%,\;21\%\;and\;16\%$, respectively. As the excess pore pressure increased, the ratio of the thrust to the total force increased.
This study presents a numerical model for simulating dense interflows. The governing equations are provided and the finite difference method is used with the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The model is used to simulate a dense interflow established in a deep ambient water, resulting velocity and excess density profiles. It is observed that velocity decreases in the longitudinal direction due to water entrainment in the vicinity of the outlet and rarely changes for increased Richardson number. Similarity collapses of velocity and excess density are obtained, but those of turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate are not. A shape factor for the dense interflow is obtained from the simulated profiles. The value of this shape factor can be used in the layer-averaged modeling of dense interflows. In addition, a buoyancy-related parameter ($c_{3{\varepsilon}}$) for the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the volume expansion coefficient (${\beta}_0$) are obtained from the simulated results.

Seabed beneath and near coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually increase the failure potential. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using the expanded 2-dimensional numerical wave tank to account for an irregular wave field. In the condition of an irregular wave field, the dynamic wave pressure and water flow velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the composite breakwater structure were estimated. Simulation results were used as input data in a finite element computer program for elastoplastic seabed response. Simulations evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress, and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the results of the analysis, the liquefaction potential at the seabed in front and rear of the composite breakwater was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance to force, scour potential could increase on the seabed. In addition, the strength decrease of the seabed due to the liquefaction can increase the structural motion and significantly influence the stability of the composite breakwater. Due to limitations of allowable paper length, the studied results were divided into two portions; (I) focusing on the dynamic response of structure, acceleration, deformation of seabed, and (II) focusing on the time variation in excess pore water pressure, liquefaction, effective stress path in the seabed. This paper corresponds to (II).
