  • With the substantial increase of the size of structure, management and monitoring of excavation for the foundation construction becomes more difficult. Therefore, massive collapses which are related to retaining wall recently increase. However, since the study on measuring and monitoring the pre-stressing force of anchor is insufficient, behavior of anchor may not be predicted and monitored appropriately by the existing strain gauge type monitoring system. FBG Sensor, which is smaller than strain gauge and has better durability and does not have a noise from electromagnetic waves, was adapted to develope a smart anchor. A series of pullout tests were performed to verify the feasibility of smart anchor and find out the load transfer mechanism around the steel wire fixed to rock with grout.

  • If a tunnel is constructed below the groundwater level, the groundwater flow will occur inducing the seepage force toward the tunnel and will result in the increase of tunnel convergence. The longitudinal deformation during tunnel excavation will also be increased due to seepage pressure. A back-analysis methodology in underwater tunnel was proposed in this study based on the relative longitudinal deformation measured in-situ. Geotechnical parameters can be estimated utilizing the proposed method where the prior estimate as well as the measured convergence can be reasonably combined by adopting the Extend Bayesian Method.

  • Flow-able backfill is known as soil-cement slurry, void fill, and controlled low-strength material (CLSM). The benefits of CLSM include reduced equipment costs, faster construction, re-excavation in the future, and the ability to place material in confined spaces such as narrow parts nearly impossible for compaction or perimeter of underground power cables. A review of some recent full-scale tests carried out by KEPRI on slurry backfill materials for application in underground power cable was presented. Based on this research, applicability was assessed and compare to results of laboratory tests for improved slurry materials with optimal mixture contents.

  • In this paper centrifuge model tests and numerical analysis on the coastal structure on the marine deposits of sand were performed to investigate the behavior of structure and foundation under the condition of wave action in field. In centrifuge model experiments, construction sequence of coastal structure such as preparation of sand deposit, excavation replacement, rubble mound with crushed stones and installment of coastal structure was reconstructed and the behavior of ground settlement during stage of construction was observed during tests. For the final stage of simulating the horizontal movement of coastal structure due to wave force, horizontal load was applied by horizontal loading apparatus being specially designed so that horizontal displacement of structure could be observed. Numerical analysis were also carried out and its results were compared with test results to assess the property of centrifuge mode experiments with respect to the behavior of structure as well as ground.

  • For the tunnel pattern of PD-3, a numerical analysis using the FEM program, MrSoil, was conducted with given geotechnical properties of surrounding rockmasses to verify the analysis results by comparing with other programs. The analyzed domain was extended to the far enough distance from the excavation surface to avoid the restrained effect by the boundary condition, and the construction sequence was employed in the analysis as calculation steps to simulate the time dependent 3 dimentional behavior of surrounding ground due to tunneling. Maximum 35 mm of the tunnel crown settlement and about 13 mm of the surface settlement were computed and the amount of settlement may not give any structural damage on the concrete structures on the ground surface. The shotcrete stress of 84 kg/cm2 and the rockbolt axial force of 9 ton as a maximum are within the allowable limit. The plastic zone was restricted near the excavation surface, but forepoling around the crown may be required to prevent rock falling. It is believed that the tunnel is designed reasonablely from the economical and safety points of view.

  • In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PSN(pretensioned soil nailing) system, is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements in top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global stability. Up to now, the PSN system has been investigated mainly focusing on an establishment of the design procedure. In the present study, the analytical procedure and design technique are proposed to evaluate maximum pretension force and stability of the PSN system. Also proposed arc techniques to determine the required thickness of a shotcrete facing and to estimate probability of a failure against the punching shear. Based on the proposed procedure and technique, effects of the radius of a influence circle and dilatancy angle on the thickness of a shotcrete facing, bonded length and safety factors arc analyzed. In addition, effects of the reduction of deformations expected by pretensioning of the soil nails are examined in detail throughout an illustrative example and $FLAC^{2D}$ program analysis. And a numerical approach is further made to determine a postulated failure surface as well as a minimum safety factor of the proposed PSN system using the shear strength reduction technique with the $FLAC^{2D}$ program. Global minimum safety factors and local safety factors at various excavation stages computed in case of the PSN system arc analyzed throughout comparisons with the results expected in case of the general soil nailing system. The efficiency of the PSN system is also dealt with by analyzing the wall-facing deformations and the adjacent ground surface settlements.

  • Korea has many underwater cultural heritages within the east, west and south seas surrounding the Peninsula that indicate historically important sealanes for trade and transportation. As these underwater cultural heritages are the objects of despoilment because of their relatively easy access through modern technology, their often high historical and priceless value demands strong protection similar to or better than the land cultural properties. Currently, Korea does not have any concrete laws or regulations for the protection of underwater cultural heritages. Thus, these heritages iu, somewhat temporary and inappropriately subjected to laws and regulations relating to provisions of individual Laws concerning protection of cultural properties act, and statute of excavation of material fir buried national property, lost articles act etc.. Internationally, the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage was adopted but not yet entered into force. Therefore, the protection of underwater cultural heritage has become an urgent matter. In this regard, this article's main purpose is to provide recommendations for improving direction of legal regime and policy for protecting our underwater cultural heritages. These legal regimes need provisions for definition of the underwater cultural heritage, scope of application, ownerships, jurisdictions and protection measures. And suggestions are provided in regard to policies for the protection of underwater cultural heritages that may improve organization and cooperation among concerned ministries and agencies, compensation system, restrictions for excavation of underwater relics, efficiency of survey of underwater surface and information system.
