To study the influences of tunneling on the earth pressure and ground settlement when the tunnel passes through the adjacent underground retaining structure, 30 two-dimensional model tests were carried out taking into account the ratios of tunnel excavation depth (H) to lateral width (w), excavation width (B), and excavation distance using a custom-made test device and an analogical soil. Tunnel crossing adjacent existing retaining structure (TCE) and tunnel crossing adjacent newly-built retaining structure (TCN) were simulated and the earth pressure variations and ground settlement distribution during excavation were analyzed. For TCE condition, the earth pressure increments, maximum ground settlement and the curvature of the ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/B, but positively related to H/s and H/w. For TCN condition, most trends are consistent with TCE except that the earth pressure increments and the curvature of ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/w. The maximum ground settlement is larger than that observed in tunnel crossing the existing underground structure. This study provides an assessment basis for the design and construction under confined space conditions.
This paper presents two new extensions to the DDA method. The extensions consist of sequential loading or unloading and rock reinforcement by rockbolts, shotcrete or concrete lining. Examples of application of the DDA method with the new extensions are presented. Simulations of the underground excavation of the Unju Tunnel of Kyungbu High Speed Railway Project in Korea were carried out to evaluate the influence of excavation sequence and reinforcement on the tunnel stability. The results of the present study indicate that improper selection of excavation sequence could have a destabilizing effect on the tunnel stability. On the other hand, reinforcement by rockbolts and shotcrete can stabilize the tunnel. It is found that, in general, the DDA program with the three new extensions can now be used as d practical tool in the design of underground structures. In particular, phases of construction (excavation, reinforcement) can now be simulated more realistically.
The development of a city is closely linked to the construction and operation of its subway system. However, constructing a new subway tunnel under an existing station is an extremely complex task, and the deformation characteristics and mechanical behavior of the new subway tunnel during the excavation process can greatly impact the normal operation of the existing station. Although the previous studies about the case of underpass engineering have been carried out, there is limited research on the condition of a newly-built subway tunnel that closely undercrossing an existing station with zero distance between them. Therefore, this study analyzes the deformation law and mechanical behavior characteristics of the preliminary lining of the underpass tunnel during the excavation process based on the real engineering case of Chengdu Metro Line 8. This study also makes an in-depth comparison of the influence of different excavation methods on this issue. Finally, the accuracy of numerical simulation is verified by comparing it with on-site result. The results indicate that the maximum bending moment mainly occurs at the floor slab of the preliminary lining, while that of the ceiling is small. The stress state at the ceiling position is less affected by the construction process of the pilot tunnel. Compared to the all-in-one excavation method, although the process of partial excavation method is more complicated, the deformation of preliminary lining caused by it is basically less than the upper limit value of the standard, while that of the all-in-one excavation method is beyond standard requirements.

The excavation performance and the cutting tool wear prediction of shield TBM are very important issues for design and construction in TBM tunneling. For hard-rock TBMs, CSM and NTNU model have been widely used for prediction of disc cutter wear and penetration rate. But in case of soft-ground TBMs, the wear evaluation and the excavation performance have not been studied in details due to the complexity of the ground behavior and therefore few testing methods have been proposed. In this study, a new soil abrasion and penetration tester (SAPT) that simulates EPB TBM excavation process is introduced which overcomes the drawbacks of the previously developed soil abrasivity testers. Parametric tests for penetration rate, foam mixing ratio, foam concentration were conducted to evaluate influential parameters affecting TBM excavation and also ripper wear was measured in laboratory. The results of artificial soil specimen composed of 70% illite and 30% silica sand showed TBM additives such as foam play a key role in terms of excavation and tool wear.
According to the developement of cities, electric wires and commuinication lines which are currently above the ground effect on the bad. Nowadays, it is necessary to build up underground facilities because the construction is increasing. Excavation work has been dominant even though the inconvenient things occurred, for example a civil appeal, a traffic obstacle, safety and spoiling the fine view because of the cost or period of the construction work. But the congestion of cities are more and more serious. Therefore shield-method is the way to escape from congestion. I considered all the construction fields which are in progress or finished.
This paper aimed to identify the variation of layout in Hwangnyoungsa buddhist temple site based on studying published the excavation research paper and texts related to layout. According to earlier studies, in 1st construction period(553~569) of Hwangnyoungsa, there were trisection spaces with one main hall and two corridors in inner part and then in 2nd period(584~645), unified one. But actually trisection spaces had been maintained until the middle part of 8th century. And in each space there was the main hall with large yard. That is the 2nd period layout of Hwangnyoungsa. For the attainment this result, each building remains are judged under duplicated situation which one was the previous and next by consideration of the construction condition and special features of foundation. Although the meaning of trisection system of Hwangnyoungsa is similar with the layout of ancient palace, it could be said to derive from accumulation excavation research in Silla's archeological site and such studies.

According to develop urban area, the depth and floor area of basement tend to become deeper and larger. Excavation work for basement floor work is very important because its cost take 20% of total construction cost. Therefore, many studies of developing retaining wall system have performed for feasibility and safety in deep excavation work. In this study, new supporting system used high-strength pipe for retaining wall is introduced to reduce the construction cost and improve the safety and constructability by analyzing case study.

The important role of observational method in geotechnical engineering are emphasized together with the direction of future development, concerning successful application of the technique on the site investigation, design and feed back at various construction stages. Case histories on the application of feed back are introduced in order to achieve the most economical and reliable construction for tunnel, rock slope and deep excavations through feed back system at design and construction stages. Also the limitations and advantages of the observational method and the role of feed back system are discussed for construction of tunnel, rock slope and deep excavation in hard ground such as layered ground conditions including weathered, soft and hard rocks.
In Korea, 70% of the land is mountainous and structures occupy a high proportion in railway and road construction. In particular, in recent years, the construction of high-speed railways and highways for high-speed driving is rapidly increasing. At the same time, the construction of tunnels is also increasing. The number of tunnel construction cases in which long-term deformation occurs after tunnel excavation is completed is increasing. The stability of these tunnel structures depends entirely on the characteristics of the rock surrounding the tunnel excavation. In the case of pyroclastic rock, which is the subject of this study, it is generally vulnerable to weathering and has a characteristic that its strength decreases over a long period of time. Tunnel design and construction planning considering the strength characteristics of pyroclastic rocks are essential. This study analyzed the cases of over-deformation that occurred at the tunnel site in the pyroclastic section. Based on this study, a plan for tunnel design and construction management in an area where pyroclastic rock exist in the future is presented.

The geomechanical characteristics of rock and the structural geological feature of the fault should be studied and examined for the successful construction of large-span tunnel. In this case study, that is a important case for the tunnel collapse and reinforcement during the construction for the waterway tunnel at large thrust fault zone in schist, we carried out geological and geotechnical survey for make the cause and mechanism of tunnel collapse. Also, we have designed the reinforcement and re-excavation for the safe construction for collapse zone and have carried out successfully the re-excavation and finished the final concrete lining.
