  • The qualitative and quantitative composition of the phytoplankton of the coastal waters off Vladivostok during the period 1991-1994 was studied. The following trends in the phytoplankton composition with decreasing distance from the source of eutrophication were revealed: 1) total density and bio-mass increased; 2) the density of the diatom Skeletonema costatum, which reflects a decrease in the Shannon-Weaver species diversity index during the summer microalgal bloom, increased significantly; and 3) the density of the non-diatom component of the phytoplankton increased.

  • This study was done to explain the role of limestone which might intervene in the phosphorus cycle in a lake. The effects of limestone on the dissolution of phosphate were estimated by simulations with the computer model Visual MINTEQ, which is designed for the chemical equilibrium calculations. According to the calculations limestone shows remarkable effects for the suppression of phosphate dissolution. The limestone can suppress the dissolution of phosphates by sacrificing themselves to acids, and as a consequence can increase the hardness and alkalinity of the lake. Both hardness and alkalinity play an important role in reducing soluble P and thus alleviate the eutrophication potential.

  • This study investigated temporal-spatial and variations in Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) products of parameters total suspended solids (TSS) and chlorophyll-a in the North Marine Areas of East China Sea.GOCI data were collected daily from February 2012 to December 2012. The higher chlorophyll-a values were observed during the investigation period. The relatively large increase in TSS and chlorophyll-a at the sampling stations coupled with typhoon events during the summer rainy period. The abnormal chlorophyll-a concentration was mainly driven by meteorological factors such as typhoon and rainfall in the coastal areas of Jeju and the North Marine Areas of East China Sea. The abnormal high chlorophyll-a concentration at the majority of the coastal stations indicate eutrophication of coastal waters, especially Red tide. The events such as eutrophication and abnormal high chlorophyll-a concentration may potentially influence outbreak of Red Tide, detected with GOCI parameters.

  • Aquatic macrophytes, often also called hydrophytes, are key components of aquatic and wetland ecosystems. This review is to briefly summarizes various macrophyte classifications, and covers numerous aspects of macrophytes' role in wetland ecosystems, namely in nutrient cycling. The most widely accepted macrophyte classification differentiates between freely floating macrophytes and those attached to the substrate, with the attached, or rooted macrophytes further divided into three categories: floating-leaved, submerged and emergent. Biogeochemical processes in the water column and sediments are to a large extent influenced by the type of macrophytes. Macrophytes vary in their biomass production, capability to recycle nutrients, and impacts on the rhizosphere by release of oxygen and organic carbon, as well as their capability to serve as a conduit for methane. With increasing eutrophication, the species diversity of wetland macrophytes generally declines, and the speciose communities are being replaced by monoculture-forming strong competitors. A similar situation often happens with invasive species. The roles of macrophytes and sediment microorganisms in wetland ecosystems are closely connected and should be studied simultaneously rather than in isolation.

  • This study represents that a removal efficiency of organic matters in wastewater is activated by a sludge process using new mixed microbial population. In case of mixed microorganisms, removal rates of suspended solid (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were over 90 percent under experimental condition, and removal efficiency of organic matters, sludge density index (SDI) and capillary suction time (CST) in mixed population were higher than that in not-mixed microorganism, while total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (T-P) which indicate a degree of eutrophication were removed easily in both case. From these results, we may propose that an application of the mixed microbial population is useful to treat domestic wastewater including a great deal of organic matters.

  • In this study, water quality characteristics of lakes in the Seosan area are analyzed. Components water quality were analysed at 10 sampled points in each lakes, and the results were evaluated for seasonal variation. It was found that water quality was over II~III class. Most of lakes in the Seosan area which implies that are suitable as the maintenance water. The concenturation of T-N, T-P was observed IV~V class during all seasons. Particularly, T-N concenturation peaks in spring, while was lowered in other seasons. In the lake, high concenturation of T-N, T-P bring about Eutrophication when algae was growth causing various physico-chemical changes in the water. It is suggested that the water quality management strategies need to be applied for each lake.

  • This paper describes a study on the role of limestone which might affect the dissolution of phosphates when phosphate containing sediments are put under anaerobic conditions. A small quantity of calcium hydroxy-apatite, alone or mixed with limestone powder, was put in contact with aqueous solution of acetic acid or carbonic acid, and variations of phosphate concentration were determined time dependantly. The results showed that the concentration was remarkably low in the presence of limestone, signifying that the coexistence of limestone suppresses the dissolution of phosphate by organic acid and/or carbonic acid. Separate experiments conducted by developing an anaerobic condition, after mixing lake sediments with dried leaves and limestone, showed that the existence of limestone suppressed the dissolution of phosphate. These results show that the application of limestone might be a useful measure to prevent deterioration of water quality originated from eutrophication by inhibiting the internal loading of P in eutrophic water-bodies.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the main cause of water quality deterioration during the spring season in the transition zone between the South Han River and the river-reservoir Paldang. A water quality model modified from QUAL2E (U.S.EPA) was used, and the model showed that eutrophication and algal production in the low flow season affected about 60% of the organic pollution at the downstream of the South Han River. This result means that phosphorus control is prior to external organic material management to ameliorate the deterioration of water quality in the water body.

  • In intensive agriculture, exceeded chemical fertilizer application would increase the concentration of nitrate nitrogen in groundwater. Consequently, it could bring the eutrophication in lakes and streams. The present study examined runoff loading of nitrogen and phosphorus from the paddy field during non-cropping season. The runoff loading of total-N, ammonia-N, nitrate-N and total-P were 12.96kg/ha, 5.42kg/ha, 1.52kg/ha and 1.41kg/ha. When the runoff loading of nutrients was compared by runoff water and sediments. About 70-80% of total-N by runoff water and the rest 20-30% by runoff sediments were flowed into streams. But 60-70% of total-P by runoff sediments and the rest 30-40% by runoff water were flowed into streams. The phosphorus compounds, which were flowed into streams by runoff sediments and then sedimented, keep exchanging with water at water body in undelivered condition. And it moves gradually into water layer. This process can cause eutrophication continually and repeatedly in water environment. So, a sound program is needed to reduce soil erosion from farmlands.
