Processing and Characterization of Liquid Crystalline Copoly-(ethylene terephthalate-co-2 (3)-chloro-1,4-phenylene terep hthalate)/Polycarbonate Blends

  • Liquid crystalline (LC) poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-2(3)-chloro-1,4-phenylene terephthalate) (50/50, mole/mole) [PECPT] was synthesized and blended with polycarbonate (PC). LC properties of PECPT and thermal, morphological, and rheological behaviors of the PECPT/PC blend were studied. PECPT showed the nematic LC phase and much longer relaxation time than poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The apparent melt viscosity of PECPT was one third of that of FET. An abrupt torque change was observed during the blending process due to the orientation of LC domains. For the blends containing 10~30 wt% of PECPT, the complex viscosities were higher than that of PC. As PECPT content increases above 40 wt%, shear thinning was observed. The lowest complex viscosity was obtained at 40~50 wt%. Transesterification of PECPT and PC was confirmed by the selective chemical degradation of carbonate groups in PC.

  • The ion-exchange membrane, Nafion, remains as the benchmark for a majority of research and development in IPMC technology. In this research, we employed a novel ionomer named by sulfonated poly(styrene-ran-ethylene) (SPSE) that is crosslinked by UV irradiation. The sulfonic acid groups were stable during the UV irradiation crosslinking process. Water uptake, ion exchange capacity, and proton conductivity are characterized for both pure SPSE and crosslinked SPSE membrane. The bending responses of SPSE actuators under both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) excitations were investigated. The voltage-current behaviors of the actuators under AC excitations are also measured. Results showed the crosslinked SPSE actuators have better electromechanical performance than that of pure SPSE actuator with regard to tip displacement as a novel smart material.

  • Cross-linked polystyrene (PS) particles with carboxyl and/or poly(ethylene glycol) units on surface were formed by an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization using styrene, methacrylic acid (MA), and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEG-diMMA) at pH 7, and followed by freeze-drying to give the corresponding powders. Monodisperse polymer particles could be obtained at a concentration of PEG-diMMA 1 mol% relative to styrene. Zeta potential of polymer surface was measured to be 91 mV at a polymer of PEG-diMMA 1 mol% and was dropped as the content of MA increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acupuncture after the induction of acute kidney disease in dogs by ethylene glycol. Twenty four mixed breed, adult cats were used in the experiment. Ethylene glycol was administered orally at 1 ml/kg in 24 cats, and then 6 cats were treated by acupunchuture 6 cats were treated by electroacupuncture, 6 cats were treated by acupuncture and 6 cats were not treated as a control group. Treatment was done once daily far 4 dsys. The acupoint used were Gan-shu and Tai-xi. The effect of acnpuncture was evaluated by clinical symptom, blood chemical values, electrocardiogram (ECG) and histopathologkal findings. After treatement, acupuncture group revealed relatively fast recovery compared with other groups, in clinical symptoms, blood chemical values, ECG waves and histopathological findings. Laserpuncture group revealed secondly fast recovery compared with control group.

Effect of nitrogen doping on properties of plasma polymerized poly (ethylene glycol) film

  • This study deals with the catalyst free radio frequency plasma assisted polymerization of ethylene glycol using nitrogen as reactive gas to modify the surface chemistry and morphology. The deposited film was characterized through various analysis techniques i.e. surface profilometry, Forier transform infrared spectroscopy, water contact angle and UV-visible spectroscopy to analyze film thickness, chemical structure, surface energy and optical properties respectively. The surface topography was analyzed by Atomic force microscopy. It was observed that the ethylene oxide behaviour and optical transmittance of the film were reduced with the introduction of nitrogen gas due to higher fragmentation of monomer. However the hydrophilic behavior of the film improved due to formation of new water loving functional groups suitable for biomedical applications.

백삼분말의 항산화 활성에 대한 감마선과 에틸렌옥사이드 처리의 영향 (Comparative Effects of Gamma Irradiation and Ethylene Oxide Fumigation on Antioxidant Activity of White Ginseng Powder)

  • The antioxidant activity and the pharmacologically active constituents such as nucleosides and phenolic substancs of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (white ginseng powder) treated with gamma irradiation (Rl group) and ethylene oxide fumigation (EO group) were compared with those of non-treated ginseng (control group). High performance liquid chromatograms of nucleosides in three groups were similar with each other. The bathochromic effect of phenolic substances at W absorption region tends to be higher for EO group than Rl group. This tendency was also observed in heat treatment of each group. However, the antioxidant activity may have some effects on the labile property of phenolic substances. In summary the gamma-irradiated ginseng was more stable than the ethylene oxide-treated ginseng, but both ginseng samples gave the similar antioxidant activity.

Effect of Ureas on the Hydrophobic Properties of Aqueous Poly(ethylene oxide) Solutions by Viscometry

  • Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in aqueous solutions has a hydrophobic character which can induce the hydrophobic interaction between its nonpolar parts. The hydrophobic properties of aqueous PEO solutions are studied by the viscometry in terms of the water structure-making and -breaking capabilities of added solutes of ureas. The results show that the contracted conformation of PEO of low molecular weight, namely poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), does not result from the hydrophobic interaction between the nonpolar parts of PEO but it can participate in a hydrophobic interaction between the nonpolar parts of PEO and added ureas solutes with nonpolar groups, which can induce a large hydrodynamic volume and increase the viscosity. On the other hand, the PEO of large molecular weight seems to behave like any other water soluble polymers with nonpolar parts and its conformation in aqueous solutions is well explained in terms of water structure perturbing capabilities of added ureas.

실리카의 이온성 액체 기능화가 메탈로센 담지촉매의 에틸렌 중합 거동에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Functionalization of Silica with Ionic Liquid on Ethylene Polymerization Behavior of Supported Metallocene)

  • Ionic liquid 기능화 및 메탈로센 촉매 담지를 위해 세 종류의 무정형 실리카와 SBA-15를 담체로 사용하였다. Ionic liquid가 표면 기능화된 실리카는 1,3-bis(cyanomethyl)imidazolium chloride의 염소 음이온과 실리카 표면의 OH 그룹 사이의 상호작용에 의해 합성되었다. 에틸렌 중합을 위해 ionic liquid가 기능화된 실리카에 메탈로센과 조촉매 methylaluminoxane(MAO)을 담지하였다. SBA-15와 비교하여 큰 기공 크기를 갖는 ionic liquid가 표면 기능화된 XPO-2412와 XPO-2410에 담지된 촉매는 기능화되지 않은 실리카에 담지된 촉매보다 높은 활성을 보였다. 그러나 SBA-15에 담지된 촉매는 ionic liquid의 표면 기능화 후에 활성이 감소하였다. 이는 ionic liquid와 메탈로센 촉매, 조촉매 MAO가 담지되면 기공의 크기가 크게 줄어들기 때문에 중합 시 에틸렌 모노머와 조촉매가 기공 내 촉매 활성점으로 확산하는데 제한을 받기 때문이다. 또한 실리카 표면의 OH 그룹의 농도 변화에 따른 촉매의 중합 활성에 대한 영향을 연구하였다. 무정형 실리카의 OH 그룹의 농도가 증가할수록 중합 활성도 증가하였으며 실리카에 담지된 촉매의 중합 활성은 ionic liquid 표면처리 후에도 유사한 경향을 보였다.

  • 탄소나노튜브의 응집력을 완화하기 위한 표면 개질과 고분자 소재와의 상용성을 유도하기 위하여, 친수성 고분자를 도입하는 연구를 진행하였다. 산처리를 통한 표면 기능화를 시행하였으며, 카복실기 도입 탄소나노튜브를 thionyl chloride을 사용하여 acyl chloride로 치환한 후 저분자량의 아민 말단 poly(ethylene oxide)를 공유결합으로 도입하였다. TGA를 통하여 탄소나노튜브 표면에 도입된 고분자의 함량을 계산하였으며, 탄소나노튜브 표면에 도입된 고분자의 표면 형상을 SEM과 TEM을 통하여 직경이 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Preparation of isotropic spinnable pitch and carbon fiber from biomass tar through the co-carbonization with ethylene bottom oil

  • In this study, we tried to prepare an isotropic spinnable pitch which can be useful to prepare the general purpose carbon fiber through the co-carbonization of biomass tar with ethylene bottom oil under two different preparation methods (atmospheric distillation, pressurized distillation). The results showed that the ethylene bottom oil added co-carbonization was very effective to decrease of the oxygen contents for obtaining a stable spinnable pitch. The pressurized distillation was more effective to reduce the oxygen functional groups of pitches than atmospheric distillation. The obtained spinnable pitch by the pressurized distillation showed higher pitch yield of 42% and lower oxygen content of 9.12% than the spinnable pitch by the atmospheric distillation. The carbon fiber derived from the pressurized distillation spinnable pitch by carbonization at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5 min showed that the higher tensile strength of carbon fiber was increased up to 800 MPa.
