Surface-Properties of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Fabric by In-line Atmospheric Plasma Treatments (연속 대기압 플라즈마를 처리한 폴리에스테르 섬유의 표면 특성)

  • Surface properties of the plasma treated fabric were changed while maintaining its bulk properties. Surface of plasma treated fabric take charge of enhanced adhesion by surface etching, surface activity. The water repellency coating Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) fabric was treated with atmospheric pressure plasma using various parameters such as Argon gas, treatment time, processing power. Morphological changes by atmospheric pressure plasma treatment were observed using field emmission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and the zeta-potential measurement, contact angle measurement equipment. At the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment time of 150 sec, the power of 800W, the best wettability and peel strength were obtained. And we confirmed the possibility of industrial application by using atmospheric plasma system.

  • Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) was pyrolyzed to eliminate acetic acid of VA unit using off-line pyrolysis, and the deacetylated EVA was analyzed infrared spectroscopy (IR) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). EVA film for deacetylation was prepared by solution casting on aluminum foil and it was pyrolyzed at low temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ in the off-line pyrolysis apparatus. After deacetylation, carbon-carbon double bond (C=C) was formed by 1,2-elimination of the VA unit in the EVA backbone. Most of C=C bonds were trans-1,4-unit and 1,2-unit was also observed. Presence of the 1,2-unit in deacetylated EVA indicates that terminal or branch VA units exist in the raw EVA. Py-GC/MS chromatogram of deacetylated EVA displayed much smaller acetic acid and much more abundant other pyrolysis products than that of raw EVA, which means that the pyrolysis efficiency and separation condition were improved.

  • Synthesis of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers on a catalytic metal substrate, using an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame, was investigated. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, with diameters of 20 - 60nm, were formed on the substrate coated with nickel-nitrate in the region of 5 - 6mm from the flame center along the radial direction. The gas temperature for this region was ranging from about 1400 to 900K. Nickel particles originated from the coated nickel-nitrate on the substrate were the major catalyst for the formation of the nanomaterials. HR-TEM and Raman spectrum revealed that synthesized carbon nanotubes had multi-walled structures with some defective graphite layers at walls.

Physical Properties of Korean Earthenware (Onggi) as Food Container (식품 보관 용기로서 옹기의 물리적 특성)

  • Thermal and gas adsorption properties were measured for Korean earthenware (onggi) as a step to elucidate its role as food preserving container. Thermal conductivity and diffusivity decreased with increase in porosity while heat capacity depended on the raw soil component rather than porosity. Thermal barrier of the earthenware was generally similar to that of glass. The onggi material could sorb or adsorb a limited amount of water vapor, $CO_2$ and ethylene gases (0.0005 g/g, $17{\mu}g/g$, $2.6{\mu}g/g$, respectively). Thermal and gas adsorption properties of onggi seem to provide unique application area for use as food container and packaging.

  • We developed a on-line gas control system for three gas components and investigated the effect of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ethylene on polysaccharide production and cell growth in the suspension cultures of Aloe saponaria. Carbon dioxide(5% v/v) enhanced significantly polysaccharide production while the cell growth was not affected.

  • This paper describes development of power transformer maintenance system using intelligent dissolved gases in oil analysis. The used gases are acetylene(C2H2), hydrogen(H2), ethylene(C2H4), methane(CH4), ethane(C2H6), carbon monoxide(CO) and carbon dioxide(CO2). The rule and neural network based gas analysis methods are used for artificial intelligent diagnosis. It is indicated that this program is efficient for diagnosis of oil immersed transformers diagnosis from application of gas analysis data of serviced transformer which has local overheating

  • The surface properties of carbon microfibers (CMFs) are modified by chemical deposition of carbon nanofibers via the so-called ethylene processing. CMFs and the modified CMFs (MCMFs) are investigated as reinforcement additives to fabricate polyethylene (PE) composites with enhanced mechanical characteristics. The mechanical properties of the PE-MCMF composites are found to be better and favorable for applications under harsh climatic conditions such as those in Siberia. Improved adhesive interaction between MCMFs and PE is responsible for these enhanced mechanical properties.

  • Gas phase compositions of the hot filament-assisted diamond CVD reaction were analyzed by on-line quadrupole mass analysis(QMA) technique. D2 isotope experiments showed that methance molecules were decomposed into atomic state and then recombined in to acetylene during transport the probe line. Although acetylene or ethylene was supplied instead of methane similar gas compositions were obtained when filament temperature was above 1500$^{\circ}C$ Therefore this system could be assumed near thermal equilibrium state. Filament temperature and reaction pressure variation experiments exhibited the same tendency between acetylene concentration and diamond growth rate and these results implied that acetylene molecule played the role of the reactive species in the diamond CVD reaction.

  • An experimental study was conducted to find the effect of DBD plasma on the flammability limits of inert-gas-diluted fuel. The results showed that the concentration of diluting nitrogen at flammability limit increased when nitrogen-diluted methane and propane were reformed by plasma, while it decreased when nitrogen-diluted ethylene was reformed by plasma. Gas chromatography results suggested that the fuel type dependence of flammability limits is due to the difference in the concentrations of hydrogen and hydrocarbon species in reformed fuel.

  • In this paper, computer modeling works have been performed for the power generation Rankine cycle using new working fluids and liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold heat. PRO/II with PROVISION released January 2023 from AVEVA company was used, and Peng-Robinson equation of the state model with Twu's alpha function was selected for the modeling of the power generation cycle. Optimal working fluid composition was determined to maximize LNG cold heat to increase power generation efficiency and net power production.
