Solution casting films of sulfonated poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-r-butylene)-b-styrene] copolymer (sSEBS)-based composite membranes that contained different amounts of organic, nanorod-shaped polyrotaxane were annealed at various temperatures for 1 h. The films' properties were characterized with respect to their use as polymer electrolyte membranes in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Different aspect ratios of polyrotaxane were prepared using the inclusion-complex reaction between $\alpha$-cyclodextrin and poly(ethylene glycol). The presence of the organic polyrotaxane inside the membrane changed the morphology during the membrane preparation and reduced the transport of methanol. The conductivity and methanol permeability of the composite membranes decreased with increasing polyrotaxane content, while the annealing temperature increased. All of the sSEBS-based, polyrotaxane composite membranes annealed at $140^{\circ}C$ showed a higher selectivity parameter, suggesting their potential usage for DMFCs.
Poly(ethylene-co-vinylacetate)(EVA) microspheres were prepared by thermally induced phase separation in toluene. The microsphere formation occurred by the nucleation and growth mechanism in metastable region. The effects of the polymer or pigment weight percentage and cooling rate on microsphere formation were investigated. The microsphere formation and growth were followed by the cloud point of the optical microscope measurement. The microsphere size distribution, which was obtained by particle size analyzer, became broader when the polymer concentration was higher, the pigment concentration and the cooling rate of EVA copolymer solution were lower.
Poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL-PEG-PCL) multiblock copolymers at various hydrophobic-hydrophilic ratios were successfully synthesized by the chain extension of triblock copolymers through isocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate). Biodegradable films were prepared from the resulting multiblock copolymers using the casting method. The mechanical properties of the films were improved by chain extension of the triblock copolymers, whereas the films prepared by the triblock copolymers were weak and brittle. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) of the multiblock copolymer film showed that the hydrophilic PEG had segregated on the film surface. This is consistent with the observed contact angle of the films.
Biodegradability of poly $Poly({\gamma}-benzyl L-Glutamate)/poly(ethylene oxide)/Poly({\gamma}-benzyl L-Glutamate)$ block copolymer (GEG) having different content of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were examined using magnetite as a tracer in mice. GEG microspheres containing magnetite were injected into mice through tail vein. Biodegradability and tissue distribution of microspheres were examined by analyzing the amount of magnetite in the microspheres recollected from mice organs after specific time interval. The results showed that GEG microsphere of high content of PEO was degraded more rapidly than those of low content of PEO in the mice organs.
Cloud-point and bubble-point data to $170^{\circ}C$ and 50 bar are presented for four different solvents, normal pentane. n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane with poly(ethylene-co-42 wt% octene) ($PEO_{42}$) copolymer. The pressure-concentration isotherms measured for $PEO_{42}$ - normal pentane have maximums at around 5 wt% of the copolymer concentrations in the solution. $PEO_{42}$- normal pentane system exhibits LCST-type phase behavior at temperatures greater than $130^{\circ}C$. Below $120^{\circ}C$, bubble-point type transitions are observed. However, the binary mixtures for $PEO_{42}$ in n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane have only bubble-point type transitions at the pressure-temperature region investigated in this study. The single-phase region of PEO - alkane mixtures increases with the molecular size of alkane solvent due to the increasing dispersion interactions between PEO and the alkane.
Cloud-point data at $230^{\circ}C$ and 1,800 bar are presented for two poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)(PEVA) copolymers[9.9mol% and 17.8mol% vinyl alcohol(VA)] in ethylene, propane, propylene, n-butane, 1-butene, dimethyl ether(DME), and chlorodifluromethane(CDFM). The static type experimental apparatus with a view cell has been used for the experiment at the high pressure and temperature. The pressure-temperature (P-T) loops of PEVA(9.9mol% VA) copolymer-DME mixtures are presented at copolymer concentrations of 1.4wt% to 20.0wt%. Also, we presented the phase behavior of PEVA(17.8mol% VA) copolymer-DME system at copolymer concentration of 1.9wt% to 6.8wt%. The cloud-point curves for the PEVA copolymers in dimethyl ether showed single phase above 480 bar as a result of the hydrogen bonding between the vinyl alcohol unit and dimethyl ether. The pressure-concentration(P-x) isotherm loops of PEVA(9.9mol% and 17.8mol% VA)-DME system are obtained. The cloud-point curves for PEVA(9.9mol% and 17.8 mol% VA) copolymers andthe ethylene, propane, propylene, n-butane, 1-butene, and CDFM all show negative slopes of phase behavior and are located at pressures below 1,800 bar. For PEVA copolymer-DME system(9.9mol% VA), cloud-point curves show positive slopes that decrease in pressures with decrease in temperature in the temperature range of $80^{\circ}C$ to $160^{\circ}C$.
pH-sensitive block copolymers were synthesized by coupling reaction of sulfamethazine and amphiphilic diblock copolymer, and their micellization-demicellization behavior was investigated. Sulfamethazine (SM), a derivative of sulfonamide, was introduced as a pH responsive moiety while methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)poly(D,L-lactide) (MPEG-PDLLA) and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly($D,L-lactide-co-{\varepsilon}-caprolactone$) (MPEG-PCLA) were used as biodegradable amphiphilic diblock copolymers. After the sulfamethazine was carboxylated by the reaction with succinic anhydride, the diblock copolymer was conjugated with sulfamethazine by coupling reaction in the presence of DCC. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and mean diameter of the micelles were examined at various pH conditions through fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. For MPEG-PDLLA-SM and MPEG-PCLA-SM solutions, the pH-dependent micellization-demicellization was achieved within a narrow pH band, which was not observed in the MPEG-PDLLA and MPEG-PCLA solutions. The micelle showed a spherical morphology and had a very narrow size distribution. This pH-sensitive block copolymer shows potential as a site-targeted drug carrier.
A macroazoinitiator (MAI) containing a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segment was intercalated in the gallery of sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT). Acrylic monomers were polymerized using this MAI intercalated in Na-MMT to prepare the acrylic copolymer nanocomposite (AN), which is a multiblock copolymer composed of two segments, an acrylic copolymer and PEG intercalated in Na-MMT (Na-MMT/PEG). When AN was used to modify the reactive hot melt polyurethane adhesive (RHA), the acrylic copolymer segment and Na-MMT/PEG synergistically enhanced the initial bond strength evolution and reduced the set time, even when the amount of Na-MMT in RHA was < 1 wt%. The viscosity of RHA increased and the tensile properties of the cured RHA film decreased due to modification with AN. These variations were more evident as the Na-MMT content in AN was increased.
The kinetics of isothermal crystallization in blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (SAA) has been examined as a function of the blend ratio, the copolymer composition, and the crystallization temperature, based on the Avrami eauation. The Avrami exponents were mostly chose to 2, independent of the crystallization temperature. The crystallization rate of PEO in PEO/SAA blends decreased with the increase of SAA content. And also, the higher the acrylic acid content in the SAA copolymer, 7he slower the crystallization rate of PEO in the blends.

The composites of EVA/EPDM including aluminum trioxide (ATH) as a fire retardant were manufactured for the purpose of improving low temperature property and flame resistance in the rubbery materials. The ratio of EVA to EPDM didn't affect the flame resistance of the rubber composites. The addition of ATH resulted in increase of the flame resistance. In the evaluation of the cold resistance, the increasing EPDM content showed enhancement of cold resistance in the composites due to increasing low Tg EPDM. It was found out that tensile strengths of the composites showed a maximum value at 100 phr of ATH by reinforcing effect, but a minimum value at 200 phr of ATH owing to slippage between the flame retardant by the external stress. In the measurement of solvent resistance in tetrahydrofuran, the increasing ATH content yielded enhancement of solvent resistance by reducing swelling of the composite, and increasing EPDM content also resulted from increase of the solvent resistance by reduction of polarizability as well as increase of crosslink in the composites.
