「샐리의 선택」: 엘리자베스 스토다드의 독특한 남북 전쟁 이야기 ("Sally's Choice": Elizabeth Stoddard's Unique Story of the Civil War)

  • The Civil War is widely accepted as the single most meaningful event in American history that overcame the most fatal crisis of internal division of the nation with much success. That meaningfulness in turn glorifies the North's triumph over the South and justifies hierarchical differences between the two. Yet, as shown in the studies of Civil War literature, such glorification and justification relies too much on the North-centered historical paradigm. This essay aims to offer a way of rectifying it by examining a short story by one of the persistently obscured writers of the period: Elizabeth Stoddard. The essay follows the cue of Alice Fahs's cultural-studies methodology of using popular wartime periodicals as the main resource of the war literature, and reads Stoddard's "Sally's Choice" as one of the examples that expose the hegemonic bias inside the North-directed discourse of the time. This essay is expected to demonstrate the necessity of expanding and deepening our conception of 'literature,' 'the Civil War,' and 'Civil War literature' in an ever-flexible and ever-changeable manner.

  • The primary purpose of the present essay is to survey the relationship between Chaucer's fatherhood and English nationalism. Chaucer as a nationalist poet with essential Englishness is a product of the pre-modern nationalist project initiated between the late thirteenth century and early fourteenth century. In this period, as Turville-Petre regards, the English nationalist identity started to rise in language and literature. Thus this essay surveys the pre-modern nationalist discourse before Chaucer and how it influenced Chaucer to spawn his own nationalist discourse. The latter half of this project, as a reception study, surveys the nationalist receptions of Chaucer in the nineteenth century, when the connection between Chaucer studies and jingoistic nationalism was highly circumstantial. In terms of Chaucer's reception, the nineteenth-century was a crucial period: during this period the nationalist discourse and Chaucer studies firmly combined and Chaucer was envisaged as a boastful nationalist poet. The essay's discussion generally revolves around Chaucer's fatherhood and his exclusive Englishness; "Chaucer the father" is nationalist rhetoric which mediates thirteenth century post-colonialism and nineteenth-century colonialism.

  • Breast augmentation is becoming more common, be it for cosmetic reasons or post-mastectomy. Multiple articles in the literature describe the imaging findings of various types of cosmetic breast augmentation. Some articles describe imaging findings for different types of post-mastectomy reconstructions. This essay aims to serve as a comprehensive reference for the multimodality imaging of various types of breast augmentations in native breast and post-mastectomy reconstructions. Familiarity with these findings will facilitate the detection of complications and new or recurrent breast malignancies in patients. With the extensive illustrations provided in this essay on normal and abnormal imaging findings of augmented breasts, readers will receive exposure that will facilitate effective practice.

Potential of L1 and L2 Corpora to Identify Target Lexical Bundles for Argumentative Essay Writing

  • This study aimed to identify target lexical bundles (e.g., on the other hand, at the same time) for argumentative essay writing and rank them in order of teaching priority for Japanese learners. Despite significant functional roles of lexical bundles in academic writing, the inclusion of lexical bundles in argumentative writing had been underexplored. Since argumentative writing skills help undergraduate students prepare for their academic careers (e.g., writing papers), the lexical bundles under this genre deserve more attention. This study first extracted 78 target bundles from L1 argumentative essay corpora (International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English: ICNALE and Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays: LOCNESS). The study then classified the bundles according to their discourse functions and semantic transparency to estimate the learnability for Japanese learners in L2 compatible corpora with the ICNALE. The results showed that learners had difficulty using the bundles with referential functions (e.g., in the form of) and semantic opaqueness (e.g., when it comes to), suggesting that the bundles in these two categories should be prioritized among the 78 bundles.

IB 확장 에세이 맥락에서의 정보활용교육 - I-LEARN 모형 적용을 중심으로 - (Information Literacy Instructions in the Context of IB Extended Essay: Focusing on the application of I-LEARN Model)

  • 본 연구는 학습을 위한 정보활용교육이 공식 교육과정 맥락에서 안정적으로 이루어지기를 기대하며 공식적인 IB 디플로마 핵심 프로그램(DP Core)의 하나인 확장 에세이 맥락에서 체계적으로 진행할 수 있는 정보활용교육의 이론적 틀을 분석 및 제안하였다. 국제 인증 교육 프로그램인 IB 프로그램은 최근 국내 일부 교육청에서 도입하였으며 고등학생 연령군 대상의 IB 디플로마 프로그램 중에는 확장 에세이가 필수 이수 프로그램이다. 본 연구의 분석 결과, 다음의 사항이 제안되었다. 첫째, 학생들의 깊이 있는 학습과 교육적 비계를 위해 모형 적용이 강조되었다. 둘째, 사서교사는 학습 과정의 전문가, 정보활용교육을 실시하는 교사, 지도교사와 협력하는 교수협력자로서 역할을 충실히 담당해야 한다. 셋째, 정보활용교육의 틀로서 정보활용 기반의 학습을 제안한 I-LEARN 모형이 분석되었고 적절하다고 제안되었다. 넷째, I-LEARN 평가 루브릭은 확장 에세이의 평가 목표인 지식, 이해, 적용, 분석, 종합, 평가와 부합하도록 설계되어 있어 확장 에세이를 위한 정보활용의 과정과 성과를 위한 평가도구로 활용되기 적절하다고 분석되었다. 향후, 본 연구가 탐구학습을 기반으로 하는 확장에세이 또는 소논문 작성에 있어 사서교사의 전문성이 적용되고, 사서교사의 교육적 역할과 정보활용교육이 강화될 수 있기를 기대한다.

  • This essay will introduce that how the Korean and Japanese numerals have been developed from the same ancient original words. It would be a big interest for many people who have interested in knowing the orgin of Japanese language of which many Japanese schalors tend to define Japanese language to be one of mysterious ones. This essay however would unveil the orgin of Japanese language refering to the close relation between Korean and Japanese language explained by the writer. Such achievement have been accomplished by the adoption of method of putting the corresponding both countries words in series arrangement developed by the writer.
