Antimicrobial Effects of Lonicera japonica against Gram Positive and Gram Negative Anaerobic Bacteria

  • It has been shown that the butanol extract of Lonicera japonica has antimicrobial and other potentially useful biological activities. The purpose of this study was to determine the in vitro activity of Lonicera japonica compared to other antimicrobial agents against anaerobic bacteria. Specifically, the in vitro activity of the butanol extract was investigated against 104 clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria using an agar dilution method and the results were compared to erythromycin, cefoxitin, imipenem, clindamycin, and metronidazole. It was found that Lonicera japonica and imipenem were the most active antimicrobial agents tested.

  • Many types of drugs affect functions of tile gastrointestinal tract. Investigators may be interested in discovery or pharmacological characterization of drugs as therapeutic agents intended for treatment of gastrointestinal disorders or in identification of gastrointestinal side effects of drugs intended for non-gastrointestinal indications. Examples of drug categories often associated with significant gastrointestinal side effects include cardiovascular drugs, antibiotics (erythromycin in particular), anti-inflammatory drugs, antiemetics, analgesics (especially opiates), antihistamines, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. Whether tile objective is development of gastrointestinal therapeutic agents or evaluation of gastrointestinal side effects, appropriate laboratory models for experimentation are essential.

  • The importance of the gut microorganism in the termite, Reticulitermes Speratus kyushuenesis Morimoto, was estimated by feeding with several antibiotics. Antibiotics which killed the bacterium, but not the fungi (Ampicillin, Kanamycin, Erythromycin), or killed both the microorganismw (Cephaloridine, Tetracycline) reduced the life span of the termite from 245 days to about 15 days. On the other hand, some antibiotics, penicillin and pimaricin, did not greatly reduce the life span of the termite.

  • Antibiotic resistance patterns were determined for 14 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated at a hospital in Pusan during summer in 1989. Resistance to chloramphenicol or clindamycin was recorded in 100% of strains. Resistance to the other compounds tested was as follows: tetracycline 86%, gentamicin 79%, tobramycin 71%, kanamycin 71%, erythromycin 57%, ampicillin 57%, methicillin 50%, streptomycin 29%, cephalothin 29%, and trimethoprim 21%. All strains were sensitive to vancomycin and rifampicin. All strains showed multiple resistance to more than 3 antibiotics.

  • A total of 130 of Staphylococcus strains isolated from various clinical specimens of admitted patients of a university hospital with systemic or severe cases of infection. All of these were tested for the antimicrobial susceptibility to 11 drugs of common use. The hospital strains isolated showed higher frequency of resistance against four drugs including gentamicin, penicillin, erythromycin, kanamycin but amikacin, cephalothin, streptomycin were effective. And also 47.7% of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus were isolated from the clinical patients. However, isolated Escherichia coli strains showed higher frequency of resistance, but two drugs, tobramycin and gentamicin were effective to them.

Antimicrobial drugs susceptibility of bacterial flora in horses with respiratory tract infections (경주마의 호흡기질환 유래균의 약제 감수성 시험)

  • Bacteria isolated from nasal cavity of 50 Thoroughbred horses with respiratory tract infection were examined. There were isolated Pseudomonas aeruginosa(33.5%), Escherichia coli(10.2%), Pseudomonas spp(7.6%), Klebsiella oxytoca(5.9%), Streptococcus equi subsp zooepidemious(6.2%), Klebsiella pneumoniae(3.4%), Acinetobacter spp(5.5%) and coagulase negative staphylococcus(2.1%). The majority of isolates were highly susceptible to amikacin, amoxicillin, aztreonam, cefotaxime, cefepime, cefotetan, ceftazidime, cefuroxime, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, imipenem, tetracyclin and vancomycin. These results can provide basic information for the treatments of respiratory tract infections in Thoroughbred horses.

  • This study was designed to compare the Antimicrobial effect of the several antibiotics on anaerobes. After Bacteroides gingivalis was streaked on the surface of Blood agar plates, antibiotic discs were applied and cultured 5 days anaerobically. Following results were obtained 1. All of the examined antibiotics had antimicrobial activity with varying degree. 2. The antimicrobial activity of Clindamycin and Tetracycline was larger than any other antibiotics. Vancomycin showed the lowest activity. Erythromycin and Ampicillin showed the moderate antimicrobial activity. (P<0.05)

  • In Korea, antibiotic fermentation industries have just started budding out now. Tetracycline derivative (Pfizer, CKD), Kanamycin (Dongmyung) are produced by fermentation processes. Penicillin, erythromycin, gentamicin, rifamycin, and a few others are being planned for production within a few years by major pharmaceutical and chemical firms in Korea. Reviewing past and present activities in the antibiotic fermentation industries in Korea suggests that the prospects for antibiotics will be very bright.

Complete Genome Sequence of Weissella koreensis DMW12 Isolated from Kimchi, Traditional Korean Fermented Vegetables

  • Weissella koreensis DMW12 was isolated from kimchi added Myeongtae (Theragra chalcogramma), and its complete genome sequence was determined. The complete genome of strain DMW12 includes a single circular 1,518,288-bp chromosome without plasmids. The G+C content of the genome is 35.6 mol%. Although strain DMW12 did not showed protease and lipase activities, the genome includes 33 protease- and 3 lipase-encoding genes. The genome of strain DMW12 does not include acquired antibiotic resistance genes against ampicillin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, tetracycline, and streptomycin.
