The authors encountered a case of Babesiasis in Korean native cative cattle at Gyeongbug prefecture. After the clinicohematological observation the patient was treated a single dose of ganaseg and the following results were obtained. 1. Initial symptoms observed were high fever, anorexia, depression and cessation of rumination and these were followed by marked hemoglobinuria and mild degree of icterus. 2. The erythrocyte count decreased to $3.6{\times}10^6/mm^3$ and the infected erythrocyte rates were 9.7 percent with Babesia sp. and 0.2 percent with Theileria sp. 3. Marked increase in band neutrophil was observed. 4. The morphology of the protozoa in erythrocytes was different from that of so-called large-type Piroplasma: various forms including paired pear-shaped, single round, oval and pear-orspindle-shaped were detected, of which the former two forms were dominant. 5. A single dose of ganaseg administered intramuscularly was highly effective for the treatment of Babesiasis.

Simultaneous deficiency of Vitamin $B_{12}$ and iron induces that the bone marrow erythroid megaloblastosis and peripheral blood macroovalocytosis are masked because of countervailing the tendency of iron deficiency to produce hypochromic microcytic erythrocytes. We report two cases of Vitamin $B_{12}$ deficiency anemia with low mean corpuscular volume (MCV) due to combined iron deficiency anemia with review of literature.

Vibrio choleae non-O1 has been reported to cause food borne gastroenteritis. This strain produces therm()stable direct hemolysin (NAG-rTDH) similar with that of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. As a result of rabbit ligated intestinal loop test, TDH caused fluid accumulation and is considered to be the major virulent factor. Hemolysis by TDH has been reported to cause colloid osmotic lysis of erythrocytes. (omitted)

Our objective was to clarify the cytogenetic characteristics, including karyotypes, cellular DNA content, and nuclear size of erythrocytes, of black plaice Pleuronectes obscurus, dotted gizzard shad Konosirus punctatus, and perch sculpin Pseudoblennius percoides, collected from the coastal areas of Jo Island, Busan, Korea. Karyotypes of P. obscurus and K. punctatus both had a diploid number of 48 and a fundamental number (FN) of 48, with a chromosome formula of 48T. The karyotype of p. percoides had a diploid number of 46 and FN of 56, with a chromosome formula of 10SM +36T. No sex-associated heteromorphic pairs were detected for any species. The variation in DNA values (P. obscurus=1.15 pg/nucleus, K. punctatus=1.56pg/nucleus, P. percoides=1.11 pg/nucleus) was positively related to variation in chromosome FN.

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the immunological effects of Hwanhonsan extract. Hwanhonsan administration into mice enhanced Arthus reaction and DTH to sheep erythrocytes, and NK cells activities. Hwanhonsan extract augmented the DNA synthesis of mitogen-activated lymphocytes. Hwanhonsan also stimulated leucocyte migration ability, MIF and IL-2 production of T lymphocytes, but not IL-6 production of B cells. These results suggested that effect of Hwanhonsan might be chiefly due to nonspecific enhancement of NK cell activities and cell mediated immune responses.

A library of unlimited number of novel lectins with diverse specificities has been previously generated by randomly mutating the carbohydrate-recognition domain of Maackia amurensis hemagglutinin (MAH). To establish the experimental environment capable of selecting high affinity mutant lectins in E. coli, phage display system was adapted. Carbohydrate binding capacity of two phagemid vectors, pComb3 and pComb8 displaying wild-type MAH lectin was assessed. Specific bindings of pComb3 and pComb8 phages expressing w.t. MAH to affinity-purified polyclonal anti-MAH antibody and to glycophorin was demonstrated. Both phages also showed strong hemagglutinating activity to intact but not sialidase-treated human erythrocytes, which is consistent to the specificity of native MAH. Taken together, two different phage display vectors successfully allowed the expression of active MAH as a fusion protein on the surface of bacteriophage, which will lead to preparation of unique plant lectins with high affinity toward a variety of carbohydrate chains.

A 3-year-old, 4.0 kg, intact male shih-tzu dog with anorexia, depression, pale mucous membranes, tachypnea, tachycardia was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Autoagglutination was observed by naked eye when blood was collected in an EDTA-tube and many spherocytes were found on a Diff-Quik stained blood smear. PCV was 6% and indirect bilirubin was increased markedly. So the immune-mediated hemolytic anemia was diagnosed. Autoagglutination was too severe to perform cross-matching test. Blood was not transfused as it might accelerate or precipitate hemolytic crisis, and regeneration of erythrocytes was very good. Thus corticosteroid of immunosuppressive dose and fluid were administered and PCV was monitored. Although blood was not transfused, PCV increased from 6 to 15.9% in a day and to 30% 7 days later. Therapy for liver was concurrently conducted because liver enzyme activities were high. Corticosteroid tappering therapy was conducted for 75 days and PCV was recovered to 46% after 4 months form start of the treatment.

The functional molecular weight of band 4.5 polypeptide was measured by applying the classical target theory to radiation inactivation data of the cytochalasin B binding. Band 4.5 polypeptides purified from human erythrocyte membranes were irradiated at -45 to $-50^{\circ}C$ with an increasing dose of 1.5 MeV electron beam, and after thawing, cytochalasin B binding activities were assayed. Each activity measured was reduced as a simple exponential function of radiation dose. $D_{37}$, dose appeared to be 6.7 mega rads, from which the target size (radiation sensitive mass) of band 4.5 polypeptide was calculated to be 95,500 daltons. This result with other informations available in literature suggests that band 4.5 polypeptide may exist as a dimer in human erythrocytes.

Three new lectins, MLA-I, MLA-II and MLA-III, have been isolatedand purified from the hemolymph of Meretrix lusoria and reported previously. Biophysicochemical characteristics were investigated with these three MLA lectins. The MLA lectins agglutinated human erythrocytes non specifically and proved as D-galactose group carbohydrate specific. Molecular weight of ML.A-I. II and III were estimated to be 330, 500 and 310KD, respectively, by gel filtration on Sepharose CL-6B column. On SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, ML.A-I was dissociated into a single subunit of 42KD, MLA-II was into the twelve subunits of 46, 32, 30, 28, 25, 23. 22, 20. 19, 16, 15, and 14KD, and MLA-III was into the two subunits of 72 and 44KD. The pl of MLA-I, II, III were 4.0. 4.9 and 5.0. Amino acid analysis revealed a high contents of acidic and hydroxy amino acids, and a paucity of sulfur containing amino acids. Proline was not contained in MLA-II.

Two kinds of new lectin fractions (LOA-I, LOA-II) were obtained from loach (Misgurnus spp.) meat by 0.15 M NaCl extraction, salt fractionation, ion exchange and hydroxyapatite column chromatographies. On polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, LOA-I exhibited one major and a few minor bands, but LOA-II exhibited three minor bands. The partially purified loach lectins agglutinated not only erythrocytes of human B and AB type, rabbit, dog, but also murine splenic lymphocytes. Agglutinability was relatively labile at various pH and stable at increasing temperature, but was not affected by tested several metal ions. By the sugar specificity test, D-glucosamine and metyl-$\beta$-galactopyranose inhibited agglutinating activity at a final concentration of 3 mM. The lectins contained relatively high amounts of aspartic acid, valine and leucine, but sulfur containing amino acids, cystein, methionine and isoleucine were not determined. LOA-I, LOA-II lectins were nonmitogenic toward murine lymphocytes.
