  • This paper proposes a new structural head-related transfer function(HRTF) model to produce sounds in a virtual environment. The proposed HRTF model generates 3-D sounds by using a head model, a pinna model and the proposed distance model for azimuth, elevation, and distance that are three aspects for 3-D sounds, respectively. In particular, the proposed distance model consists of level normalization block distal region model, and proximal region model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we setup an experimental procedure that each listener identifies a distance of 3-D sound sources that are generated by the proposed method with a predefined distance. It is shown from the tests that the proposed model provides an average distance error of $0.13{\sim}0.31$ meter when the sound source is generated as if it is 0.5 meter $\sim$ 2 meters apart from the listeners. This result is comparable to the average distance error of the human listening for the actual sound source.

  • This paper analyzes the characteristics of abnormal broadcast GPS ephemeris by comparing distances between the receiver and the satellites. Effects of abnormal ephemeris on receiver's position estimate are closely related with range errors caused by variations of satellite positions. In more detail each range error depends on the satellite position error and the line of sight vector. Based on the fact, the ephemeris parameters are classified into three types depending on the size, the shape, and the shape of the satellite orbit to analyze the fault characteristics. The effects of satellite position errors caused by the three type s of parameters on the receiver's position estimate are analyze d in detail.

  • For mass production of printed electronics in roll-to-roll fashion, precision tension control is important to reduce register errors. Register error should be minimized within several to tens of microns for many electronic devices to be manufactured through printing technology. In order to achieve this goal, tension disturbance must be attenuated before printing process within a certain range. In this paper, a certain tension range which allows maintaining register error within 10 micron was defined with specific operating conditions. A LQG controller was proposed instead of the conventional PI controller for precision tension control using a multivariable feedback. A guideline to determine design parameters for calculating LQ gain was proposed. The proposed LQG controller was compared to both PI controller and LQ regulator with white noise by numerical simulations. Results showed that the proposed LQG controller was effective for attenuating tension disturbance with white noise.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a phytotron for studying the effects of environmental factors such as temperature and humidity on plant growth. This equipment consists of the growth chamber, and the measurement and control system including control algorithms required for optimum operation. As the first step of the study, a temperature and humidity control system was developed. The results of this study are summarized as follows ; 1. Pt-100 was selected to measure temperature and a linearized op-amp circuit was developed for signal conditioning. 2. Pt-100 wet bulb thermometer based on Asmann's principle was developed to measure relative humidity. 3. Temperature and relative humidity conditions were controlled by ON-OFF and PWM operation using a PID controller. And an autotuning algorithm using the characteristics of step response was developed to determine optimal PID constants which were independent of the size of apparatus and environmental factors. 4. Under the ambient temperature of $20^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$, the temperature was kept within the error of ${\pm}0.3^{\circ}C$ in the range of $10^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C$, and the relative humidity was kept within the error of ${\pm}5%$ in the range of ${\pm}50%{\sim}90%$.

  • A Bit-depth expansion is a method to increase the number of bit. It is getting important as the needs of HDR (High Dynamic Range) display or resolution of display have been increased because the level of luminance or expressiveness of color is proportional to the number of bit in the display. In this paper, we present effective bit-depth expansion algorithm for conventional standard 8 bit-depth content to display in high bit-depth device (10 bits). Proposed method shows better result comparing with recently developed methods in quantitative (PSNR) with low complexity. The proposed method shows 1db higher in PSNR measurement with 40 times faster in computational time.

  • The pressure and differential pressure(DP) transmitters are used for gas flow rate calculation on the orifice gas metering system. On site, the pressure and DP transmitters are installed in a shelter to diminish the affects of environmental change such as an ambient temperature. But there has been an argument about the effectiveness of the shelter and this brought up the necessity to verify the affects of ambient temperature. These experiments were performed to verify the ambient temperature effects as observing the output of transmitters when the ambient temperature were changed from $-30^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the most of transmitters were operated in the spec range of performance criteria presented by manufacturer but the rapid change of ambient temperature could cause the larger measurement error for the DP transmitter of low span than others. Therefore the pressure and DP transmitters need to be operated and controlled within the proper range of ambient temperature.

  • A simple RC circuit model of large-scale touch screen panels is developed and the frequency range of the RC model is analyzed. 2D EM simulation results of a single touch cell are cascaded for a 23 inch touch panel using a circuit simulator, and the shortest and longest channels of the full panel are modeled with a 5-element RC circuit. The 5-element RC circuit can model the touch screen panel upto 130 kHz with the channel phase error of $10^{\circ}$. 7-element RC circuit model is also proposed and the frequency range for the channel phase error of $10^{\circ}$ is extended to 200 kHz.

  • This paper presents an altitude detection accuracy for long range and multifunction radar. The accuracy is difficult to estimate because it is affected by an time varying atmosphere refractivity. We analyze altitude accuracy with a raytracing simulator with atmosphere refractivity. An altitude error is simulated with measured and modeled refractivity, and the modeled refractivity is used for compensate an altitude accuracy. As a result, the error is modeled with normal distribution function, and analyzed.

  • This paper proposes an improved phase estimation method for AM(Amplitude Modulation) range measurement system. The previous phase estimation method induces errors by Doppler shift of a moving target. The proposed method compensates phase estimation error through the ADC(Adaptive Doppler Correction) to take the Doppler shift, thus can improve distance measurement accuracy. When compared with the previous method through simulation results, the Doppler shift compensation and accuracy are improved by 94.7% and 50%, respectively. Target distance error in an acoustic tank is estimated to be 7.7cm, which confirms that the proposed method can be used to estimate the distance in the marine environment.

  • In the last decade, displacement-based (DB) methods have become established design procedures for reinforced concrete (RC) structures. They use strain and displacement measures as seismic performance control parameters. As for other simplified seismic design methods, it is of great interest to prove if they are usually conservative in respect to more refined, nonlinear, time history analyses, and can estimate design parameters with acceptable accuracy. In this paper, the current Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) procedure is evaluated for designing simple single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems with specific reference to simply supported RC bridge piers. Using different formulations proposed in literature for the equivalent viscous damping and spectrum reduction factor, a parametric study is carried out on a comprehensive set of SDOF systems, and an average error chart of the method is derived allowing prediction of the expected error for an ample range of design cases. Following the chart, it can be observed that, for the design of actual RC bridge piers, underestimation errors of the DDBD method are very low, while the overestimation range of the simplified displacement-based procedure is strongly dependent on design ductility.
