  • Solid particle erosion wear characteristics of high Cr white iron hardfacing were investigated using the erosion wear test method according with the ASTM G76-95. Wear experiments, where the blast angle, blast distance and blast pressure were selected as test variables, were planned and analyzed by response surface method (RSM to evaluate the wear loss statistically and quantitatively. The measured wear losses well coincided with the calculated ones by the experimental equation. The wear loss of high Cr cast iron hardfacing was increased with blasting pressure, but affected in a complicated way by the blasting angle and distance. Erosion wear of high Cr cast iron hardfacing could be well predicted by RSM analysis of wear variables.

  • A comprehensive review on sliding and solid particle erosion wear characteristics of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics and SiC composites is provided. Sliding or erosion wear behavior of ceramics is dependent on various material characteristics as well as test parameters. Effects of microstructural and mechanical properties of SiC ceramics are particularly focused to understand tribological performance of SiC ceramics. Results obtained between varieties of pairs of SiC ceramics indicate complexity in understanding dominant mechanisms of material removal. Wear mechanisms during sliding are mainly divided in two groups as mechanical and tribochemical. In solid particle erosion conditions, wear mechanisms of SiC ceramics are explained by elastic-plastic deformation controlled micro-fracture on the surface followed by radial-lateral crack propagation beneath the plastic zone.

  • This paper addresses the R-curve properties, wear resistance, and erosion resistance of the two silicon carbide ceramics with different microstructures, i.e. , fine grained SiC and in situ-toughened SiC(IST SIC). Fine grained SiC exhibits a relatively flat R-curve behavior whereas the IST SiC exhibits a increasing R-curve behavior. The increasing R-curve behavior in IST SiC is attributed to relatively weak grain boundaries. The rate of material removal during wear tests and erosion tests was higher for IST SiC than that for fine grained SiC. This is attributed to the weaker grain boundaries in IST SiC than that in fine grained SiC. It is implied that fracture toughness in short crack regime should be taken into consideration in the interpretation of the microscopical material removal process. We show that the higher the strength of grain boundaries is, the higher wear and erosion resistances are.

  • The effect of Mn on cavitation erosion resistance and the sliding wear resistance of Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy was investigated. Mn is known to decrease stacking fault energy and enhance the formation of $\varepsilon$-martensite. Cavitation erosion resistance for 50 hours and sliding wear resistance for 100 cycles were evaluated by weight loss. Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy showed more excellent cavitation erosion resistance than Mn-added NewAlloys. $\Upsilon-\alpha$' phase transformation that can enhance erosion resistance by matrix hardening occurred in every specimens. But, only in Mn free Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy, the hardened matrix could repress the propagation of cracks that was initialed at the matrix-carbides interfaces more effectively than Mn-added NewAlloy The Mn free Fe-base hardfacing NewAlloy showed better sliding wear resistance than Mn-added alloys. Mn-addition up to 5wt.% couldn't increase the sliding wear and cavitation erosion resistance of Fe-base hardfacing alloy because it didn't make $\Upsilon\to\varepsilon$ martensite phase transformation. Therefore, it is considered that the cavitation erosion and the sliding wear resistance can be improved due to $\Upsilon\to\varepsilon$ martensite phase transformation when Mn is added more than 5wt.% in Fe-base hardfacing alloys.

  • In China, agricultural irrigation water often contains a lot of suspended sediment which may cause the nozzle wear. In this study, a new numerical simulation combing the Discrete Phase Model and a remeshing algorithm was conducted. The geometric boundary deformation caused by the erosion wear, was considered. The weight loss of the nozzle, the node displacement and the flow field were investigated and discussed. The timestep sensitivity analysis showed that the timestep is very critical in the erosion modeling due to the randomness and the discreteness of the erosion behavior. Based on the simulation results, the major deformation of the boundary wall due to the erosion was found at the corners between outlet portion and contraction portion. Based on this remeshing algorithm, the simulated erosion weight loss of the nozzle is 4.62% less compared with the case without boundary deformation. The boundary deformation changes the pressure and velocity distribution, and eventually changes the sediment distribution inside the nozzle. The average turbulence kinetic energy at the outlet orifice is found to decrease with the erosion time, which is believed to change the nozzle's spray performance eventually.

  • This study assesses the wear process of particle impingement erosion which is a major source of erosion among fluid power components. First, Bitter's theory was modified to simplify engineering calculations. Second, actual experiments were conducted to validate the modified equation. And the effect of concentration and size distribution of impinging particles was tested. Little deviation from the prediction of the modified equation was observed. To develop complete analytical approach to the erosion mechanism, further experimental data are required to establish a correlation with other engineering parameters.

  • The T-curve, wear and erosion behaviors of two different silicon carbides, i.e., the fine grained SiC and the in situ-toughened SiC(IST-SiC). Both materials exhibited an increasing T-curve behavior, although the T-curve of IST-SiC was steeper than that of fine grained SiC. The fracture toughness of IST-SiC was larger than that of fine grained SiC at long crack regime, whereas an opposite tendency occurred at short crack regime. The rate of material removal during wear and erosion tests was higher in IST-SiC compared to fine grained SiC. The difference between the material removal rates of two materials was discussed in the light of their R-curve behaviors.

  • TiN coated films exhibit excellent mechanical properties such as high wear, erosion and corrosion resistances and a high thermal stability. Therefore, they are widely applied to a coating material in tools, ornaments, parts and semiconductors. However, the fracture of TiN coated films frequently occurs. The distribution of preferred orientations, i.e., texture, of TiN coated films strongly influences the fracture behavior of these films. In the present study. various TiN coating layers having different textures were prepared by the reactive ion physical vapor deposition and the texture dependence of friction coefficient, erosion and corrosion in these coating layers was investigated. The sample depicting the (115) texture parallel to the coating layer normal displayed a flatter surface than that observed from the sample having the (111) texture. The friction coefficient of TiN thin films was hardly dependent on the texture of coated samples. The samples having (115) texture displayed higher wear, erosion and corrosion resistances than the samples having (111) texture.

  • TiN coated films show a good mechanical properties, high thermal properties and wear, erosion and corrosion resistance and are widely used as a coating materials in tools, ornaments, parts and semiconductors. In spite of these good properties, the fracture of TiN coated films occur during use. The fracture of TiN thin films is related to their microstructure. Especially, the life of TiN coated layer is related to the texture of the TiN films. One researcher suggested that the corrosion and erosion resistance of the TiN thin films is related to a uniform and dense structure of films. In this study, we studied the relationships between textures and friction coefficient, erosion and corrosion in TiN coated films. The flatness of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is flatter than that of (111) texture surface. The friction coefficient of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is similar with that of (111) texture surface. The wear resistance of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is better than that of (111) texture surface. The erosion and corrosion resistance of (115) texture surface of TiN thin films is better than that of (111) torture surface. As well as texture, the wear, erosion and corrosion of TiN thin films has to consider defects such as pinholes, cracks, surface roughness and open columnar structure. The life of TiN coated products is influenced by the properties of wear, erosion, and corrosion resistance of TiN thin films and is related to texture of TiN coated films, density of pinholes and cracks, density of structure, and surface flatness.
