  • In this paper, a new time-domain reduction method for unbalanced 3 phase power systems will be represented. The impulse response of the system is used to identify a discrete-time equivalent filter model. The model is formulated directly in the phase domain. Each phase has a self-mode equivalent model and two mutual-mode equivalent models. The equivalent model is determined by the transfer function identification technique based on the Prony analysis. The model is implemented in EMTDC and tested with an unbalanced 3 phase network. The result of test showed that the equivalent model is accurate.

  • Design criteria, modeling rules, and analysis principles of seismic isolation systems have already found place in important building codes and standards such as the Uniform Building Code and ASCE/SEI 7-05. Although real behaviors of isolation systems composed of high damping or lead rubber bearings are nonlinear, equivalent linear models can be obtained using effective stiffness and damping which makes use of linear seismic analysis methods for seismic-isolated buildings possible. However, equivalent linear modeling and analysis may lead to errors in seismic response terms of multi-story buildings and thus need to be assessed comprehensively. This study investigates the accuracy of equivalent linear modeling via numerical experiments conducted on generic five-story three dimensional seismic-isolated buildings. A wide range of nonlinear isolation systems with different characteristics and their equivalent linear counterparts are subjected to historical earthquakes and isolation system displacements, top floor accelerations, story drifts, base shears, and torsional base moments are compared. Relations between the accuracy of the estimates of peak structural responses from equivalent linear models and typical characteristics of nonlinear isolation systems including effective period, rigid-body mode period, effective viscous damping ratio, and post-yield to pre-yield stiffness ratio are established. Influence of biaxial interaction and plan eccentricity are also examined.

  • In energy-based design, the structures are generally transformed into equivalent SDOF systems to obtain the input and the dissipated energy. In this study the energy demands in multi-story structures were compared with that of equivalent single degree of freedom systems to validate the transformation method. Three-, eight-, and twenty-story steel moment-resisting frames and buckling restrained braced frames are compared with those of equivalent single degree of freedom systems. Sixty earthquake ground motions recorded in different soil conditions were used to compute the input and hysteretic energy demands in model structures. According to the analysis results, in 3 and 8-story structures the hysteretic energy demands computed in the equivalent SDOF structures are compatible with those computed in the original MDOF structures, while in the 20-story structures the transformed equivalent structures underestimated the hysteretic energy demands.

  • This paper illustrates a tie line constrained equivalent assisting generator (TEAG) model considering forced outage rates of transmission systems for reliability evaluation of interconnected power systems. Interconnections between power systems can provide improved levels of reliability. It is expected that the TEAG model developed in this paper will prove useful in the solution to problems related to the effect of transmission system uncertainties in the reliability evaluation of interconnected power systems. It is important that interconnection between power systems can provide the improved levels of reliability. Therefore, It is expected that the TEAG model developed in this study will provide some solution among many problems for interconnected power systems as an optimal tie line capacity and a connected point between assisting systems and assisted system. The characteristics and validity of this developed TEAG considering transmission systems are introduced by case study of three IEEE MRTS interconnected.

  • A new equivalent linearization technique is proposed for a friction damper-brace system (FDBS) idealized as a elastoplastic system. The equivalent linearization technique utilizes secant stiffness and dissipated energy defined by the probability distribution of the extremal displacement of the FDBS. In addition, a conversion scheme is proposed so that an equivalent linear system is designed first and converted to the FDBS. For comparative study, an existing model update technique based on system identification is modified in a form appropriate to update single element. For the purpose of verification, shaking table tests of a small scale three-story shear building model, in which a rotational FDBS is installed, are conducted and equivalent linear systems are obtained using the proposed technique and the model update technique. Complex eigenvalue analysis is conducted for those equivalent linear systems, and the natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are compared with those obtained from system identification. Additionally, RMS and peak responses obtained from time history analysis of the equivalent linear systems are compared with measured ones.

  • In seismic design and structural assessment using the displacement-based approach, real structures are simplified into equivalent single-degree-of-freedom systems with equivalent properties, namely period and damping. In this work, equations for the optimal pair of equivalent properties are derived using statistical procedures on equivalent linearization and defined in terms of the ductility ratio and initial period of vibration. The modified Clough hysteretic model and 30 artificial accelerograms, compatible with the acceleration spectra for firm and soft soils, defined by the Japanese Design Specifications for Highway Bridges are used in the analysis. The results obtained with the proposed equations are verified and their limitations are discussed.

  • In order to predict biologically significant attributes such as function from protein sequences, searching against large databases for homologous proteins is a common practice. In particular, BLAST and HMMER are widely used in a variety of biological fields. However, sequence-homologous proteins determined by BLAST and proteins having the same domains predicted by HMMER are not always functionally equivalent, even though their sequences are aligning with high similarity. Thus, accurate assignment of functionally equivalent proteins from aligned sequences remains a challenge in bioinformatics. We have developed the FEP-BH algorithm to predict functionally equivalent proteins from protein-protein pairs identified by BLAST and from protein-domain pairs predicted by HMMER. When examined against domain classes of the Pfam-A seed database, FEP-BH showed 71.53% accuracy, whereas BLAST and HMMER were 57.72% and 36.62%, respectively. We expect that the FEP-BH algorithm will be effective in predicting functionally equivalent proteins from BLAST and HMMER outputs and will also suit biologists who want to search out functionally equivalent proteins from among sequence-homologous proteins.

  • For the real-time power system analysis, there exists a limitation to the scale of the system to be simulated, hence it is necessary for the real-time simulation to develop reduced equivalent systems which preserve the desired property of the original system. In this paper, a procedure for developing an equivalent system whose scale is reduced within the hardware capacity of a real-time simulator is proposed. Also, the proposed procedure is applied to a KEPCO's system. The comparison between the original system and equivalent systems illustrates the capabilities of the proposed procedure.

  • This paper deals with the development of benchmark systems based on the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) system. A novel procedure for constructing a dynamic equivalent system of the KEPCO system is proposed. By using such a system, various scenarios can be simulated and compared with the original system. The results of the simulation show the benefits of the proposed equivalent system and its validity is confirmed by applying it to the KEPCO system.
