The study was conducted at low lying areas in Pabna Sirajgong districts of Bangladesh. To observe the potentiality of bio-mass production two trials were conducted. In first trial maize intercropped with Khesari taking 15 experimental plots of each size $5m{\times}5m$ were arranged in 5 blocks having homogenous soil characteristics. The study showed that the bio-mass yield of sole maize and sole Khesari were 35.25 t/ha. and 56.80 t/ha. respectively and there was a significant difference (p < 0.01) among them. The results also showed that bio-mass yield of maize and Kherasi was higher ($70.04{\pm}6.25t/ha$, $98.88{\pm}10.77t/ha$ and $80.56{\pm}9.5t/ha$) compared to sole maize and sole Khesari and land equivalent ratio was also lower. For second trial, one hectare of land was divided into 16 experimental plots with 4 replications in each plot. Four levels of urea (0 kg/ha, 30 kg/ha, 45 kg/ha, and 60 kg/ha.) were applied to experimental plot. The seed rates were 98.8 kg/ha (farmer's practice), 86.45 kg/ha, 74.1 kg/ha and 61.75 kg/ha. average bio-mass yield of matikalai at different seed rates along with urea fertilizer ranged from 38.49 t/ha, to 65.35 t/ha. the highest seed rate along with highest fertilizer also correspond to the peak production (65.35 t/ha) and the lowest seed rate (61.75 kg/ha) along with the lowest fertilizer rate (30 kg/ha.) showed lowest production (38.49 t/ha.). Here, it was found that the bio-mass yield of matikalai increased with the incremental amount of seed, indicating significant effect (p < 0.05) of seed rates on the bio-mass yield of matikalai. On the other hand, fertilizer doses in different treatment combinations had significant effect (p < 0.05) on bio-mass yield. Two levels of seed rates at zero level of fertilizer were recommended : 86.45 kg/ha for the resource rich farmers and 61.75 kg/ha for the resource poor farmers.

In equivalent static nonlinear analysis and in energy-based design, the structures are generally transformed into an equivalent SDOF system. In this study the seismic energy demands in multi story structures, such as three-, eight-, and twenty-story steel moment-resisting frames(MRF), buckling restrained braced frames(BRBF) and a damage tolerant braced frame(DTBF), are compared with those of equivalent single degree of freedom(ESDOF) systems. Sixty earthquake ground motions recorded In different soil conditions, which are soft rock, soft soil, and neat fault, were used to compute the input and hysteretic energy demands in model structures. In case the modal mass coefficient is less than 0.8, the effects of higher modes are considered in the process of converting into ESDOF According to the analysis results, the hysteretic and input energies obtained from 3 story and 8 story MRF and DTBF agreed well with the results from analysis of equivalent SDOF systems. However in the 20 story BRBF the results from ESDOF underestimated those obtained from the original structures.
Gas explosion accidents are steadily being issued due to increased gas consumption in Korea and foreign countries. To analyze the effects of these gas explosions, a TNT equivalent method is used. In this study, the TNT equivalent was calculated in the event of an explosion due to the volume content in the air of CO, CH4 and C2H4, the typical flammable gases emitted by coal. Also, the peak overpressure and impulse variation with the distance from explosion point were compared and analyzed by gas using the calculated equivalent value of TNT. The upper limit of the TNT equivalent for the three mixed gases is up to five times larger than the other gases mixture. In addition, the peak overpressure and impulse, which are factors of the TNT characteristic curve, are also increasing as the number of gases increases.

Small-scale models have been frequently used for seismic performance tests because of limited testing facilities and economic reasons. However, there are not enough studies on similitude law for analogizing prototype structures accurately with small-scale models, although conventional similitude law based on geometry is not well consistent in the inelastic seismic behavior. When fabricating prototype and small-scale model of reinforced concrete structures by using the same material, added mass is demanded from a volumetric change and scale factor could be limited due to aggregate size. Therefore, it is desirable that different material is used for small-scale models. Thus, a modified similitude law could be derived depending on geometric scale factor, equivalent modulus ratio and ultimate strain ratio. In this study, compressive strength tests are conducted to analyze the equivalent modulus ratio of micro-concrete to normal-concrete. Then, equivalent modulus ratios are divided into multi-phase damage levels, which are basically dependent on ultimate strain level. Therefore, an algorithm adaptable to the pseudodynamic test, considering equivalent multi-phase similitude law based on seismic damage levels, is developed. Test specimens, consisted of prototype structures and 1/5 scaled models as a reinforced concrete column, were designed and fabricated based on the equivalent modulus ratios already defined. Finally quasistatic and pseudodynamic tests on the specimens are carried out using constant and variable modulus ratios, and correlation between prototype and small-scale model is investigated based on their test results. It is confirmed that the equivalent multi-phase similitude law proposed in this study could be suitable for seismic performance tests on small-scale models.
This paper compares the two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) approaches for the numerical determination of the equivalent mechanical properties of fractured rock masses. Both orthogonally-fractured model and discrete fracture networks (DFN) were used for the geometry and 2D models were cut in various directions from 3D model to compare their mechanical properties. Geological data were loosely based on the data available from Sellafield, UK. Analytical method based on compliance tensor transformation was used for investigation in orthogonally fractured rock and numerical experiments were conducted on fractured rock mass with DFN geometry. It is shown that 2D approach always overestimates the elastic modulus of fractured rock masses by a factor of up to around two because fractures are assumed to be perpendicular to the model plane in 2D problems. Poisson ratios tend to have larger values in 2D analysis while there is opposite trend in some sections. The study quantitatively demonstrates the limitation of the 2D approach that uses the simplified model from true 3D geometry.
This study is focused on the characterization of an effective hydraulic conductivity in each hydrogeologic unit assumed as an equivalent continuum medium in the granitic area. Four boreholes of 3" diameter were installed and a Multi-packer system was facilitated in the selected borehole. Various in-situ tests including the fracture logging, constant injection and fall-off tests, slug and pulse tests were carried out. A hydrogeologic unit was defined into the upper and lower zones based on the variation of fracture properties and hydraulic conductivities. The difference of the result obtained by the various hydraulic tests and the effective characterization techniques on rock mass permeability are also discussed. The effective hydraulic conductivity of the upper unit was measured by two times(5.27E-10 m/s~7.57E-10 m/s) that of the lower unit(2.45E-10 m/s~6.81E-10 m/s)through the constant injection and fall-off tests.
The three methods of analysis (i) REV(representative elemental volume), (ii) non-REV and (iii) joint network analysis are introduced in this paper to analyze the groundwater flow in jointed rock mass and the inflow into underground excavations. The results from those methods are compared one another to reveal their characteristics by varying the number of joints and the diameter of the opening. The pre-processor, the so-called sequential analysis, is introduced to predict the equivalent hydraulic conductivity of a jointed rock mass having a number of intersecting joints. Using the finite element mesh, joint map and sequential analysis, the equivalent hydraulic conductivities are calculated for all 445 elements. The hydraulic inhomogeneity and the determination of the representative properties of jointed rock masses are discussed. In the REV analysis where the entire rock mass is homogenized through the representative properties, the inflow is increased regularly and consistently by increasing the joint density, the opening size and the conductivity contrast value. Though the non-REV analysis showed irregular variation of the inflow due to the local inhomogeneity allowed to individual elements, the inflow approached the REV results as the characteristic length increases. The joint network analysis showed the most sensitive reaction to the joint density, the opening size and the presence of the network crossing the opening. The reliability of the network analysis depends on the geometric data of individual joints. In view of the limited field data on joint geometry and possible uncertainty the REV and non-REV methods are considered more practical and rational than the joint network analysis.
In this paper. the lumped electrical circuit approach of mass/spring system is used to model the mechanical aspects according to the frequency. Therefore, the mass/spring system can be dealt with here and linked with the equivalent circuit of electric linear oscillatory actuator(LOA). Analysis models are double-coil type linear compressor for stirling refrigerator. The compressor consists of the moving coil LOA, piston, and spring. The electro-mechanical system with mass and spring can be represented using the lumped electrical circuit. We present the system impedance and dynamics of moving coil linear compressor.
An analytical model of liquid sloshing is developed to consider the energy-loss effect through a partially submerged porous baffle in a horizontally oscillating rectangular tank. The nonlinear boundary condition at the porous baffle is derived to accurately capture both the added inertia effects and the energy-loss effects from an equivalent non-linear drag law. Using the eigenfunction expansion method, the horizontal hydrodynamic force (added mass, damping coefficient) on both the wall and baffle induced by the fluid motion is assessed for various combinations of porosity, submergence depth, and the tank's motion amplitude. It is found that a negative value for the added mass and a sharp peak in the damping curve occur near the resonant frequencies. In particular, the hydrodynamic force and free surface amplitude can be largely reduced by installing the proper porous baffle in a tank. The optimal porosity of a porous baffle is near P=0.1.

In this paper, a method is proposed to accurately and efficiently estimate the equivalent added mass of hydro-dynamic pressure on dam floodgates subjected to earthquake loading. The present method is based on a relatively-simple procedure using on-site vibration measurement and finite element frequency analysis, which is sufficiently practical to be used in the earthquake resistance performance evaluation of dam floodgates.
