An experiment was carried out to investigate the mechanical behaviour of the circular hollow section reinforced concrete member with internal corrugated steel tube. A specimen, 50cm in diameter and 340cm in length, was made and tested by 3 points bending. The test load was increased slowly (quasi static) to the failure or unacceptable deformation. During the test, lateral displacement at mid point and longitudinal displacement of extreme fiber on compressive and tensile side of the specimen were measured. The measured data were analysed and compared with calculated results for the equivalent member without inserted corrugated steel tube. The comparison shows that the flexural strength and ductility of hollow section reinforced concrete members can be improved by inserting corrugated steel tubes inside.
PURPOSES : The purpose of the study was to examine dynamic features of concrete after mixing a little macro fiber with small aspect ratio and long length utilized for bridge, tunnel and shotcrete for tensile performance and crack control in domestic/overseas countries with cement concrete pavement mix. METHODS : Coarse aggregates with small aspect ratio and macro fibers with maximum length of approximately 32 mm are introduced in small quantities in the mix proportions of concrete pavement so as to prevent loss of the workability. Then, this study intends to evaluate the applicability of macro fibers in the mix proportions of concrete pavement by examining the basic construction performance, as well as the change of toughness, the equivalent bending strength and the flexural toughness index caused by compression, bending, tension and the flexural stress-displacement curve. RESULTS : As the results, in each kind of macro fiber, polyvinyl alcohol fiber and steel fiber displayed a good performance. CONCLUSIONS : In 0.2 and 0.3% of fiber contents, it is appeared that polyvinyl alcohol fiber has a large effect on improvement of tensile performance and steel fiber on improvement of deforming performance of bending stress.
This paper presents findings from an experimental study that was focused on evaluating the use of Forta-Ferro (FF) and Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) fibers on the response of moderate and special ductility beams under load cycles. For this reason, eight full-scale specimens, identical in geometry, were subjected to gradual cyclic loading. The specimens included two plain concrete beams with medium and special ductility, three beams with medium ductility and stirrup spacing of one-quarter the effective depth (d/4) and three beams with special ductility, and stirrup spacing of one-half the effective depth (d/2), strengthened with FF and PVA fibers separately. The use of fibers was aimed at reducing the amount of shear reinforcement in flexural members. Here, the variation of parameters including the maximum strength, ultimate strength, stiffness, ductility, damage index, energy dissipation, and equivalent damping was studied. Utilizing FF and PVA fibers improved the performance in beams with moderate ductility when compared to those beams with special ductility. Therefore, in special ductility beams, fibers can be used instead of crossties and in moderate ductility beams, fibers can be added to reduce the ratio of shear reinforcement. Furthermore, increasing the stirrup spacing in the moderate ductility beams from d/4 to d/2 and adding 0.6% FF or 1.5% PVA fibers resulted in behavior similar to those of the moderate ductility beam.

Recently, the reduction of vehicle weight has been increasingly studied, in order to enhance the fuel efficiency of passenger cars. In particular, the seat frame is being studied actively, owing to considerations of driver safety from external impact damage. Therefore, this study focuses on high strength steel sheet (SPFC980)/polymer heterojunction hybrid materials, and their performance in regards to impact energy absorption. The ratio of impact energy absorption was observed to be relatively higher in the SPFC980/polymer hybrid materials under the impact load. This was found by calculating the equivalent flexural rigidity, which is the bending effect, according to the Castigliano theorem. An efficient wire-web structure was investigated through the simulation of different wire-web designs such as triangular, rectangular, octagonal, and hexagonal structures. The hexagonal wire-web structure was shown to have the least impact damage, according to the simulations. This study can be utilized for seat frame design for passengers' safety, owing to efficient impact absorption.
The current Concrete Structural Design Code (2007) prescribe the equivalent rectangular stress block of the ACI 318 Building Code as concrete compressive stress distribution for design of concrete structures. The rectangular stress block may be enough for flexural strength calculation, but realistic stress-strain relationship is required for performance verification at selected limit state in performance-based design. Moreover, the ACI rectangular stress block provides non-conservative flexural strength for high strength concrete columns. Therefore a new stress distribution model is required for development of performance-based design code. This paper proposes a concrete compressive stress-strain distribution model for design and performance verification. The proposed model has a parabolic-rectangular shape, which is adopted by Eurocode 2 and Japanese Code (JSCE). It was developed by investigation of experimental test results conducted by the authors and other researchers. The test results cover high strength concrete as well as normal strength concrete. The stress distribution parameters of the proposed models are compared to those of the ACI 318 Building Code, Eurocode 2, Japanese Code (JSCE) and Canadian Code (CSA) as well as the test results.

Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns with aspect ratio 4.5 were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable is transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratios of spirals of all the columns are 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The longitudinal steel ratio is 2.017%. The axial load ratio is 7%. This paper describes mainly crack behavior, load-displacement hysteresis loop, seismic performance such as equivalent damping ratio, residual displacement and effective stiffness and flexural over-strength of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variable. The regulation of flexural over-strength is adopted by Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design, 2012). The test results are compared with nominal strength, result of nonlinear moment-curvature analysis and the design specifications such as AASHTO LRFD and Korea Bridge Design Specifications(Limited state design).

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) 318-11 permits the use of the moment magnifier method for computing the design ultimate strength of slender reinforced concrete columns that are part of braced frames. This computed strength is influenced by the column effective length factor K, the equivalent uniform bending moment diagram factor $C_m$ and the effective flexural stiffness EI among other factors. For this study, 2,960 simple braced frames subjected to short-term loads were simulated to investigate the effect of using different methods of calculating the effective length factor K when computing the strength of columns in these frames. The theoretically computed column ultimate strengths were compared to the ultimate strengths of the same columns computed from the ACI moment magnifier method using different combinations of equations for K and EI. This study shows that for computing the column ultimate strength, the current practice of using the Jackson-Moreland Alignment Chart is the most accurate method for determining the effective length factor. The study also shows that for computing the column ultimate strength, the accuracy of the moment magnifier method can be further improved by replacing the current ACI equation for EI with a nonlinear equation for EI that includes variables affecting the column stiffness and proposed in an earlier investigation.
Concrete-filled-steel-tubular (CFST) columns have been well proven to improve effectively the strength, stiffness and ductility of concrete members. However, the central part of concrete in CFST columns is not fully utilised under uni-axial compression, bending and torsion. It has small contribution to both flexural and torsion strength, while it can be replaced effectively by steel with smaller area to give similar load-carrying capacity. Also, the confining pressure in CFST columns builds up slowly because the initial elastic dilation of concrete is small before micro-crackings of concrete are developed. From these observations, it is convinced that the central concrete can be effectively replaced by another hollow steel tube with smaller area to form double-skinned concrete-filled-steel-tubular (CFDST) columns. In this study, a series of uni-axial compression tests were carried out on CFDST and CFST columns with and without external steel rings. From the test results, it was observed that on average that the stiffness and elastic strength of CFDST columns are about 25.8% and 33.4% respectively larger than CFST columns with similar equivalent area. The averaged axial load-carrying capacity of CFDST columns is 7.8% higher than CFST columns. Lastly, a theoretical model that takes into account the confining effects of steel tube and external rings for predicting the uni-axial load-carrying capacity of CFDST columns is developed.

In this study, we conducted the preliminary research for high speed laser cutting of LED module. In particular, the feasibility of ultra-high speed laser cutting of 100 mm/s which exceeds the cutting speed of conventional dicing saw was examined. For this, copper/ceramic and silicone/ceramic hybrid substrates, which are the components of the LED module, were fabricated, and the surface morphology, surface roughness and flexural strength of the laser-cut samples were investigate and compared with the dicing-cut samples. To investigate optimal laser cutting conditions for hybrid substrates, the effects of various laser cutting conditions on cutting surface characteristics were studied using single ceramic and copper substrate. Optimal laser cutting conditions of the hybrid substrates were the use of Ar assist gas, high laser power and high assist gas pressure. Comparing the cutting surface of the hybrid substrates, the surface characteristics of the laser-cut samples are slightly inferior to those of the dicing-cut samples. The average surface roughness of the laser-cut samples was about $9{\mu}m$, and that of the dicing-cut samples was about $4{\mu}m$. However, considering very low cutting speed (3 mm/s) of the dicing saw, the surface morphology of the laser-cut sample was relatively uniform, and the surface roughness was not much different from that of the dicing-cut sample. The flexural strength of the laser-cut samples was equivalent to or slightly inferior to the flexural strength of dicing-cut samples. However, if the laser processing conditions are sufficiently optimized, the ultra-high speed laser cutting of the LED module will be possible.
Coal combustion by-product (CCB) bottom ash, obtained from burning of pulverized coal, has physical properties which are similar to that of natural sand with particle sizes ranging from fine gravel to fine sand. Several studies have been completed to utilize pulverized coal combustion (PCC) bottom ash as a partial or full replacement of fine aggregate in cement concrete products. The objectives of this study were to develop air-entrained concrete composites using PCC bottom ash from burning of Illinois coal and to demonstrate the use of these composites on real-world projects. The results obtained show that the compressive, splitting-tensile, and flexural strengths of concrete composites is slightly lower than that of conventional concrete are early curing ages. However, after 60 days of curing, the strength of concrete composites is either equal to or slightly higher than that of an equivalent conventional concrete. The concrete composites showed lower resistance to chloride ion penetrability than that of an equivalent conventional concrete at early curing ages. However, after 28 days of curing, concrete composites showed better resistance to chloride ion penetrability compared to that of an equivalent conventional concrete.
