In this paper, active shape control of composite structures actuated by shape memory alloy (SMA) wires is presented. The thermo-mechanical behaviors of SMA wires were experimentally measured. Hybrid composite structures were established by attaching SMA actuators on the surfaces of graphite/epoxy composite beams using bolt-joint connectors. SMA actuators were activated by phase transformation, which induced by temperature rising over austenite finish temperature. In this paper, electrical resistive heating was applied to the hybrid composite structures to activate the SMA actuators. For (aster and more accurate shape/deflection control of the hybrid composite structure, PID feedback controller was designed from numerical simulations and experimentally applied to the SMA actuators.

This study investigated the effect of deep-sea environment on the compressive characteristics of polymer matrix composite. The specimens used in the experiment were thick Carbon-Epoxy composites that were made from Carbon-Epoxy prepregs. The specimens were immersed into seawater for thirteen months. The seawater content at saturation was about 1.2% of the specimen weight. The hydrostatic pressures applied were 0.1 MPa, 100 MPa, 200 MPa, and 270 MPa. It was found that the compressive elastic modulus increased about 10% as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 200 MPa. The modulus increased additional 2.3% as the pressure increased to 270 MPa. It was also found that compressive fracture strength and compressive fracture strain increased with pressure in a linear behavior. Compressive fracture strength increased 28% and compressive fracture strain increased 8.5% as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 270 MPa.

The effect of microsilica content modified with silicone-modified epoxy on electrical and mechanical properties of cycloaliphatic epoxy/microsilica system was investigated. The cycloaliphatic epoxy resin was diglycidyl 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylate and curing agent was an anhydride. Surface of microsilica was modified with silicone-modified epoxy. Electrical breakdown strength, the most important property for electrical insulation materials was tested. Tensile and flexural tests were also performed using universal testing machine (UTM). The microcomposite with 60 wt% microsilica shows maximum values in electrical breakdown strength.
The influence of MWCNTs on fracture toughness properties of MWCNTs/Nickel-Pitch Fibers/epoxy composites (MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy) was investigated according to MWCNTs content. Nickel-Pitch-based carbon fibers (Ni-PFs) were prepared by electroless nickel-plating. The surface properties of Ni-PFs were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). The fracture toughness of MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy was assessed by critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$). From the results, it was found that the fracture toughness properties of MWCNTs/Ni-PFs/epoxy were enhanced with increasing MWCNTs content, whereas the value decreased above 5 wt.%. MWCNTs content. This was probably considered that the MWCNTs entangled with each other in epoxy due to an excess of MWCNTs.
In this manuscript, free vibrations of a unidirectional composite orthotropic Timoshenko beam based on finite strain have been studied. Using Green-Lagrange strain tensor and comprising all of the nonlinear terms of the tensor and also applying Hamilton's principle, equations of motion and boundary conditions of the beam are obtained. Using separation method in single-harmonic state, time and locative variables are separated from each other and finally, the equations of motion and boundary conditions are gained according to locative variable. To solve the equations, generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is applied and then, deflection and cross-section rotation of the beam in linear and nonlinear states are drawn and compared with each other. Also, frequencies of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composite beams for different boundary conditions on the basis of the finite strain are calculated. The calculated frequencies of the nonlinear free vibration of the beam utilizing finite strain assumption for various geometries have been compared to von Karman one.

The fiber-reinforced composite materials have been advanced for various applications because of its excellent mechanical and electromagnetic properties. On their manufacturing processes, however, thermo-curing inherently produces the undesired thermal deformation mainly from temperature drop from the process temperature to the room temperature, so called spring-back. The spring-back must be removed to keep the precision of designed shape. In this research, the spring-back of {glass fiber / epoxy}+{carbon fiber / epoxy} unsymmetric hybrid composites were predicted using Classical Lamination Theory (CLT), and compared with the experimental data. Additionally, using finite element analysis (ANSYS), the predicted data and experimental data were compared. The predicted values by CLT and ANSYS were well matched with experimental data.

The tribological behavior of carbon epoxy composites whose surfaces have many small grooves of $100\mu m$ width was experimentally investigated with respect to the sliding direction against groove orientation, surface pressure (P) and velocity (V). The wear mechanism of the composites was observed to calculate the wear volume with respect to the friction coefficient using scanning electron microscopic (SEM). Experimental results show that the abrasive wear is dominant wear mechanism for the grooved composite surface and the friction and wear are greatly reduced when the sliding direction is parallel to the axis of groove because abrasive particles are removed through the grooves effectively.

Weight loss experiments have been performed for unidirectional carbon fiber/epoxy laminates under both isothermal and cyclic thermal conditions. It was found that weight losses were the result of both specimen-geometry dependent oxidative degradation and volumetric geometry dependent thermal degradation. Thermal degradation was found to play a major role in the overall weight loss process, and photomicrographs of cross-sectioned, aged specimens confirmed this fact. A method to predict the effect of isothermal environment on the weight loss was introduced and found to be in good agreement with experimental data at temperatures near Tg (glass transition temperature).

In this paper, the expert cure system for carbon fiber epoxy composite materials, which controls the temperature and pressure of the autoclave according to the several rules, was developed to manufacture better composite products in shorter curing time. The rules were based on the on-line measured quantities such as the dielectric properties and temperature of the composites and the pressure of the autoclave. The curing time and the mechanical properties of the composite materials manufactured with the expert cure system were compared to those of the specimens manufactured with the conventional cure cycle.

This study is investigated of tensile and fatigue strength for advanced composite materials under hygrothermal environment. The materials used are two types of Carbon/Epoxy reinforced composite materials i.e., 13$0^{\circ}C$ cure-type composite T-1/347, and 18$0^{\circ}C$ cure-type MM-1/982X. These are composed by cross-ply laminates. Test condition is the distilled water of 8$0^{\circ}C$. The separate absorption contents estimated by the Fick's diffusion rule are similar to the experiment results. The tensile strength of T-1/347 wet specimens more increased than that of dry ones, but that of MM-1/982X decreased. The fatigue strengthes of both T-1/347 and MM-1/982X wet specimen more decreased than those of dry specimens.
