  • Unusual yellowish-green intramuscular granulomatous lesions were found in a carcass of Hanwoo(slaughtered, 30 month old). Those were 1-3 mm in diameter, oval shaped, and paralleled with muscle fibers. Histologically, severe inflammation, eosinophilic granulomas and necrosis were observed in the muscle tissue. We also observed sarcocysts in the muscle cells. In a polymerase chain reaction, we identified 900bp length, sarcocystis specific fragment. It would be diagnosed as sarcocystosis in Hanwoo.

  • Eosinophilic inflammation is the main histological correlate of airway hyperresponsiveness and tissue injury in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma. Interleukin (IL)-5 appears to be one of main proinflammatory mediators that induce eosinophilic inflammation. Allergic IL -5-deficient mice do not generate eosinophilia in the bone marrow, blood or lung in response to allergen provocation. (omitted)

  • A 26-year-old male member of the Australian Defense Force presented with a history of central abdominal pain of 4 weeks duration and peripheral eosinophilia consistent with eosinophilic enteritis. Acute hookworm disease was diagnosed as the cause. Adult worms recovered from feces after therapy with albendazole were morphologically consistent with Ancylostoma ceylanicum. As the patient had been deployed with the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands for 6 months prior to this presentation, it is very likely that the A. ceylanicum was acquired in Solomon Islands. Until now, it has been assumed that any Ancylostoma spp. recovered from humans in Solomon Islands is A. duodenale. However, this case demonstrates that human hookworm infection acquired in the Solomon Islands could be caused by A. ceylanicum.

  • Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF), also known as Shulman syndrome, is an inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology. It usually presents with pain, swelling, and tenderness of the proximal aspect of the limbs, chest, or neck, with subsequent induration of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, in association with peripheral eosinophilia. EF is differentiated from scleroderma by the pattern of skin involvement and non-involvement of muscle. We report a case of progressive EF presented with tightness and stiffness in all limbs.

  • Haemocyte characterization in the surf clam, Mectra veneriformis was carried out based on morphological, cytochemical, and phagocytic characteristics. The haemocytes were classified into two cell types, granulocytes and agranulocytes on the basis of presence of cytoplasmic granules. Granulocytes were then classified again into 2 types, large eosinophilic granulocytes and small eosinophilic granulocytes after staining with May-Grünwald Giemsa. In electron microscopy, both types of granulocytes contained electron-dense and electron-lucent cytoplasmic granules. Agranulocytes (hyalinocytes) were also divided into two cell types, large agranulocytes and small agranulocytes based on their sizes. Both cell types did not have granules in cytoplasm. Granulocyte and agranulocyte were negative for the enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase, peroxidase, and $\beta$-glucuronidase but positive for phenoloxidase and acid phosphatase activities. Both types of haemocytes have phagocytic activity, with the exception of small agranulocyte, and granulocytes seemed more active in this respect than agranulocytes. This present study is the first study to characterize haemocytes of M. veneriformis.
