  • This study has an aim to construct a reference frame to analyze the appropriateness of environmental education(EE) materials of elementary schools, and to search the basic direction of the scheme for analysis. In addition, this study has an aim to induce what the results of this analysis suggests for the development and reconstruction of EE materials. It was analyzed how truly EE materials reflected contents selected as an analysis scheme, after grasping practical use and features of textbooks, audio-visual materials, and a web-site that are typical materials in EE of elementary schools. The results in textbook analysis were that there were a human-centered environmentalism in the EE unit ("Environmentally Sound National Development", 5th Grade) of Social Studies. The result in analysis of audio-visual materials "Environmental Warrior, Zentaforce" of EBS, were that there are unhealthy environmentalism in that material. In other words, technology itself is considered as a almighty means to solve environmental problems. Finally, the result in web-site analysis were that the "Environmental Class" of Ministry of Environment did not have sound environmentalism. The above result of study shows us that the most important thing in developing and using the environmental education materials is to have sound environmental values and EE perspective, to evaluate EE material with various point of view, to judge its result, and to use it.

  • The animal industry must be environmentally sound to ensure its long-term sustainable growth. Livestock wastes mostly manure, can be a valuable resource as well as a potential hazard to environment. The first option of manure management is developing an 'environmentally sound' feeding program and feeds so there are less excreted nutrients that need to be managed. Once the manure is produced it can be best utilized as a fertilizer of a soil conditioner. In many countries the amount of manure that can be spread on land depends on the nutrient requirements of the crop being grown. The laws specify maximum application rates and not animal stocking rates. Farmer who reduce the N and P component of manure can release pressure on the environment without having to reduce the number of animals. There are alternative system for housing and manure treatment which generate manure that are easier to handle and have less pollutants or more economic value. Treated animal waste may also be used as a feedstuff or fuel source. Most of the options of waste management result in increased costs to implement. It is necessary to assess the economics in order to find an acceptable compromise between the increased costs and the benefit to the environment. Animal welfare is also becoming more and more of an issue and it will lead to systems where animals are kept in less confined environment. The new system will have a great impact in the waste management system in the future.

  • There are approximately 500 abandoned mining sites in Korea. Abandoned mines cause various environmental and safety problems such as landscape damage, soil, groundwater and stream pollution by heavy metal, acid mine drainage and soil erosion. According to the survey, there are significant numbers of mines causing environmental problems in Korea. For a environmentally sound management of abandoned mines, the Soil Pollution Control Act should include the regulation concerning soil pollution and recovery standards of the abandoned mines. Also, comprehensive survey about abandoned mines, setting-up of tile recovery priority, finance for clean-up are necessary.

  • Theses days, there are 3 prerequisites for dam building in Korea: First one is how to build the dam safe and stable from the technical points of view. Second one is how to design and construct the dam environmentally sound with the minimum change of the surrounding area of the dam site. Third one is how to activate the local economy of the surrounding area of the dam site in order to make the dam construction sustainable from the social and economical points of view. As far as technical aspects far dam building, there are hardly any problems in dam design and construction in our country. However, there are a little difficulty according to the location of the dam site. In order to fulfill the second option it is believed that a lot of effort should be made to accomplish the second task not only because that fairly large area shall be inundated with water after impounding but also because that ecological environments shall be changed due to change of water environment. Therefore, thoughtful investigation and assessment of the environmental features of the local regions have to be preceded before starting of the dam building. In order to overcome these difficulties Hantan river dam has been declared as an Eco-dam with 3 strategies and 9 activities plan at the design stage after sufficient consideration of the local identities of these region and coupled national plans for surrounding areas. Finally, Eco-tourism with the several coupled network-wise touristic courses, namely PERTH model, has been proposed after thorough analysis of the local identities by the Jahari window to make local economy being activated. Detailed descriptions for 3 strategies and 9 activities plan for declaration of Eco-dam and proposal of Eco-tourism with the network-wise touristic courses will be mentioned in the main content.

  • As the population grows, the importance of the fishery industry continues to rise. It is therefore vital to support and promote sustainable fishery industry. However, the fishery production has been declining, mainly due to overdevelopment and depletion in fishery resources and stricter limits on development limits caused by growing concerns over the marine environment and ecology. Recently, international activities related to marine environmental and its ecosystems conservation, have been vigorously pursued. The United Nations Convention on The Law of The Sea has stipulated the protection and conservation of the marine environment, and the implementation of fishery resources development, made in harmony with the environment and fishery resources and based upon scientific findings and principles has become important. Accordingly, fishery industry must pay thorough attention to marine ecological and environmental problems and its international fisheries regime. Fisheries development can affect fishery resources, their environment and ecosystems. Adverse ecological effects resulting from fishery resources development practices in general include overdevelopment and incidental development of non target species, physical degradation of seabed habitants and degraduation of water quality. It has now become more important than ever to build up fishery resources development while achieving the conservation of biodiversity and the marine environment, as well as the restoration of destroyed ecosystems. To maintain fishery industry, it is necessary to develop bioeconomic fishery production system and industry policies for the ESSD(environmentally sound and sustainable development) given that maintenance of a favourable marine environment will ensure the fishery resources productivity. These bioeconomic system and policies are necessary to ensure the sustainability and viability of the fishery industry under ESSD fisheries concepts.

  • As of Jan. 2006, numbers of korean registered ocean-going vessels reached 546 which amounted to 13,716,733 G/T. Vessels, generally spooking, finish her life cycle and are dismantled or recycled. However, most of these activities have been done in undeveloped countries instead of in developed countries as the environmental restrictions in developed countries get more strict, accordingly international bodies adopted shipbreaking-related guidelines and prohibit transboundary of obsolete ships, taken as one of wastes. The authors made the Working Guidelines on Shipbreaking to cope with substandard working environment and reduce the environmental damage, and came up with a method to make a inventory of hazardous materials for effective control, finally framed a draft of Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling examining related international conventions such as Basel Convention, IMO Guideline, ILO Guideline and IMO new Convention(draft) on shipbreaking and recycling.

  • Addressing urban noise problems, this study develops eco-friendly, inorganic sound-absorbing panels, overcoming the limitations of traditional PMMA and cement-based panels. These conventional panels pose safety risks due to flammability and environmental concerns due to carbon emissions. Utilizing industrial waste, the research comprises two phases: initial tests for physical and performance characteristics (fluidity, density, compressive strength, sound absorption) and subsequent development of optimized panel mixtures. This approach aims to replace existing panels with sustainable, effective alternatives, significantly contributing to safer, environmentally responsible urban infrastructure. The findings of this study have implications for the sound panel market, offering novel solutions for noise control while aligning with environmental and safety standards.

  • Recently, endocnne dIsruptors have been known as one of the most harrnful chemical material. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cogintion and behavoor of milddle school students on the endocrine disruptors. To achieve this goal, survey research was conducted. Data were collected from 531 first and third-grade students in Suwon city. The main results of this study are summarized as follows FIrst, the mam source of information on the endocrine disruptors was mass media such as TV. This means environmental education in school is needed and mass media can be a very important tool for education. Secondly, as grades become higher, more students had knowledge on the endocrine disruptors. The difference between boys and girls was not significant. Thirdly, most students recognized endocrine disruptors as a dangerous material. However, they had an optimistic view on the possibility of resolving the environmental problems using science and technology in the future. Lastly, the scores of environmentally sound behavior was not highly correlated to those of knowledge. This means that in current environmental education system, more knowledge on the endocrine disruptors do not ensure more environmentally-correct behavior. These survey results show that environmental education on the endocrine disruptors should be constructed to induce correct behavior. That is, environmental education from now on has to be conducted to change the behavior of student as well as to increase knowledge.

  • An innovative wafer drying system was developed using Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and nitrogen carrier gas in order to replace the commercial conventional drying system which was a non-environmentally friendly system. This system was designed as following ; the IPA evaporation chamber and the process chamber were separated to increase drying efficiency, and the carrier gas with the IPA vapor was delivered into the process chamber. It was investigated that the IPA concentration was the most important factor to operate the system. The optimum concentration was found to be 2.4 ml IPA/N2 1. In addition, the optimum flow rate of the nitrogen gas were maintained more than 60 l/min.
