A Korean air dispersion modeling software, AirMaster, was developed on a basis of dispersion theories adopted in U.S. EPA's ISC3 (Industrial Source Complex - version 3) model to assess the air quality impact from the stacks. Key characteristics of AirMaster are as follows: 1) The building downwash effect can be easily simulated; 2) The screen, long term, and short term models can be run independently; 3) The input data to run the model such as meteorological and terrain data are supplied automatically from the databases in AirMaster; and 4) The modeling procedure is easy and simple under the GUI window environment. In order to validate AirMaster, comparisons with ISC3 model and Indianapolis tracer experiment were carried out. It was shown that AirMaster was identical to ISCST3 and ISCLT3 models in predicting the 1 hr to annual concentrations from the stack under various stack emission and meteorological conditions. The 1 hr concentrations predicted by AirMaster also showed a good agreement with the Indianapolis tracer measurements.
Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.
In order to evaluate the performance of a powdered activated carbon (PAC) contactor, two water treatment plants (WTP) were selected as target sites. The result of tracer tests showed that the plug flow portion of a bisymmetry-type contactor (H WTP) was more than 70%. A maze-type contactor (C WTP) also had more than 70% of plug flow portion after intra-basin baffles were installed. According to the operating data of the target WTPs, there was no clear evidence that the addition of PAC contributed to the removal of organics. However, the results of jar tests, conducted with the raw water taken from the H WTP, proved that PAC could remove dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to some extent when the proper velocity gradient was maintained. It was estimated that the production rate, defined as the ratio of the operating flowrate to the design flowrate, of the C and H WTPs was only 27 and 50%, respectively. Because of these lower production rates, the mixing intensity in the contactor was much less than the designed value and, finally, the performance of the PAC contactor was much lower than what was expected.
The purpose of this study concerns the improvement of air quality in school classrooms. Polluted indoor air is improved by efficient ventilation systems. So it is important to measure the amount of ventilation needed in classrooms. First, the amount of natural ventilation were measured through a tracer gas method. And we have established a heat recovery ventilation system from 4 cases of airflow in classrooms, and we have measured the change of $CO_2$ density. According to air quality measurements in the classrooms, the density of $CO_2$ is well above environmental standards which are acceptable. When the amount of ventilated airflow increases, indoor air quality is improved. It is surveyed that the most suitable amount of external inducted air is 770 CMH to satisfy $CO_2$ less than 1,000 ppm in classrooms. For improvement of air quality in classrooms, we must consider a suitable ventilation plan and installation of ventilation systems when constructing school buildings.
The purpose of this paper is to understand the time series and origin of a chemical component and to compare the difference during yellow sand episodes for analysis $PM_{10}$ chemical components in the region of west in Korean Peninsula, 1999-2001. An annual mean concentration of $PM_{10}$ is $29.1\;{\mu}g/m^3$. A monthly mean and standard deviation of $PM_{10}$ concentration are very high in spring but there is no remarkably seasonal variation. Also, water soluble ionic component of $PM_{10}$ be influenced by double more total anion than total cation, be included $NO_{3}^-\;and\;SO_{4}^{2-}$ for the source of acidity and $NH_{4}^+$ to neutralize. Tracer metals of $PM_{10}$ slowly increases caused by emitted for soil and ocean (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Na) and Zn, Pb, Cu, Mn for anthropogenic source. According to method of enrichment factor (E.F) and statistics, assuming that the origin of metal component in $PM_{10}$ most of element in the Earth's crust e.g. Mg, Ca, Fe originates soil and Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb derives from anthropogenic sources. The ionic component for $Na^{+}\;Cl^-,\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ and Mg, Al, Ca, Fe originated by soil component largely increase during yellow sand period and then tracer metal component as Pb, Cd, Zn decrease. According to factor analysis, the first group is ionic component ($Na^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+}$) and metal component (Na, Fe, Mn and Ni) be influenced by soil. The second group, Mg, Cr also be influenced by soil particle.

Acidic air pollutants were collected to characterize indoor air quality at a private house in Seoul during the spring period. All indoor and outdoor samples were measured simultaneously using an annular denuder system. The data set was collected on twelve different days with a 24-hr sampling period in April and May 1997. The chemical species measured were HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$in the gas phase and P $M_{2.5}$ (dp 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), S $O_4$$^{2-}$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ in the particulate phase. Indoor concentrations of HN $O_2$, N $H_3$, and P $M_{2.5}$ were greater than outdoor levels. However, indoor concentrations of HN $O_3$, S $O_2$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ were less than those found from outdoors. In the case of S $O_4$$^{2-}$, the indoor and outdoor concentrations were similar. Indoor concentrations of P $M_{2.5}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ were dependent upon the outdoor concentrations. A tracer-gas decay technique with sulfur hexafluoride (S $F_{6}$ ) as the tracer gas was used to estimate the air exchange rate of a private home in the spring. The average air exchange rate was computed to be 2.87 h $r^{-1}$ .X> .

This study dealt with the characteristics and the interrelations of hydrogeological parameters such as hydraulic conductivity, dispersivity and effective porosity of unconsolidated sediments for providing the basic data necessary for the planning of the management and preservation of groundwater quality in the Nakdong River Delta of Busan City, Korea. Groundwater quality in this area has been deteriorated due to seawater intrusion, agricultural fertilizer and pesticide, industrial wastewater, and contaminated river water. The physical properties (grain size distribution, sediment type, sorting) and aquifer parameters (hydraulic conductivity, effective porosity, longitudinal dispersivity) were determined from grain size analysis, laboratory permeability test and column tracer test. Among 36 samples, there were 18 Sand (S), 7 Gravelly Sand (gS), 5 Silty Sand (zS), 5 Muddy Sand (mS), and 1 Sandy Silt (sZ). Hydraulic conductivity was determined through a falling head test, and ranged from $9.2{\times}10^{-5}$ to $2.9{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$ (0.08 to 25.6 m/day). From breakthrough curves, dispersivity was calculated to be 0.35~3.92 cm. Also, effective porosity and average linear velocity were obtained through the column tracer test, and their values were 0.04~0.46 and 1.06E-04~6.49E-02 cm/sec, respectively. Statistical methods were used to understand the interrelations among aquifer parameters of hydraulic conductivity, effective porosity and dispersivity. The relation between dispersivity and hydraulic conductivity or effective porosity considered the sample length, because dispersivity was affected by experimental scale. The relations between dispersivity and hydraulic conductivity or effective porosity were all in inverse proportion for all long and short samples. The reason was because dispersivity was in inverse proportion to the groundwater velocity in case of steady hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient, and groundwater velocity was in proportion to the hydraulic conductivity or effective porosity. This study also elucidated that longitudinal dispersivity was dependent on the scale of column tracer test, and all hydrogeological parameters were low to high values due to the sand quantity of sediments. It is expected that the hydrogeological parameter data of sediments will be very useful for the planning of groundwater management and preservation in the Nakdong River Delta of Busan City, Korea.
