Effects of normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and sample size on behavior of ballast in direct shear tests using DEM simulation

  • Ballast particles have an irregular shape and are discrete in nature. Due to the discrete nature of ballast, it exhibits complex mechanical behaviour under loading conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) can model the behaviour of discrete particles under a multitude of loading conditions. DEM is used in this paper to simulate a series of three-dimensional direct shear tests in order to investigate the shear behaviour of railway ballast and its interaction at the microscopic level. Particle flow code in three dimension (PFC3D) models the irregular shape of ballast particles as clump particles. To investigate the influence of particle size distribution (PSD), real PSD of Indian railway ballast specification IRS:GE:1:2004, China high-speed rail (HSR) and French rail specifications are generated. PFC3D built-in linear contact model is used to simulate the interaction of ballast particles under various normal stresses, shearing rate and shear box sizes. The results indicate how shear resistance and volumetric changes in ballast assembly are affected by normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and shear box size. In addition to macroscopic behaviour, DEM represents the microscopic behaviour of ballast particles in the form of particle displacement at different stages of the shearing process.

The Structure and Evolution of Renewable Energy Trade Networks in the RCEP Region: Application of SNA Method

  • This paper utilizes social network analysis to examine the structural characteristics and trade dynamics of the renewable energy (hydropower, wind energy, and solar energy) trade network within the RCEP region from 2011 to 2020. The findings reveal: (1) The renewable energy trade network within the RCEP exhibits dynamism, heterogeneity, and an uneven development. The solar energy network is the most balanced and stable, while the wind energy network lags and shows marked fluctuations, with the hydropower network falling between these two. This demonstrates the diversity of energy trade within the region. (2) China, Singapore, and Japan are identified as the key exporting and importing countries, with Vietnam showing substantial growth potential. Individual analyses shed light on the stark disparities in trade status among nations, reflecting the diverse roles and future potential of member countries. (3) The QAP regression analysis reveals a significant influence of environmental pressure, particularly carbon dioxide emissions, on the renewable energy trade network. This study contributes to promoting environmental sustainability and energy security in the RCEP region and provides empirical evidence for global renewable energy trade strategies.

Predictability Experiments of Fog and Visibility in Local Airports over Korea using the WRF Model

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate and improve the capability of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in simulating fog and visibility in local airports over Korea. The WRF model system is statistically evaluated for the 48-fog cases over Korea from 2003 to 2006. Based on the 4-yr evaluations, attempts are made to improve the simulation skill of fog and visibility over Korea by revising the statistical coefficients in the visibility algorithms of the WRF model. A comparison of four existing visibility algorithms in the WRF model shows that uncertainties in the visibility algorithms include additional degree of freedom in accuracy of numerical fog forecasts over Korea. A revised statistical algorithm using a linear-regression between the observed visibility and simulated hydrometeors and humidity near the surface exhibits overall improvement in the visibility forecasts.

  • This study intends to analyze the various spatial structures of the Seoul city museum with reference to the layouts and the qualitative mode of exhibition items. Understanding the way of actual exhibition design can be a clue to understand the contents of exhibition story which guarantees to make the pertinent space and visitors route organization between different levels of architectural space and exhibition space. The basic methodological ideas of this study are as follows; 1) Systematic analysis about the characteristics of exhibits, historic context, and hierachy of each thematic zone. 2) Analysis of physical combination of object spatial cell in the view of visitors circulatiov.   • This project has been designed for people to experience and understand the process, importance and benefit of coal fire plants. As the biggest and first typical Korean fire plant using coal, Boryeong fire plant has had important roll for the Korean industries. Even so, people has had wrong prejudice for the fire plant in terms of environmental protection. To do these kind of rolls, this museum has been designed with theme, "Boryeong fire plant mating symbiotic relationship between nature, human and technologies." The space was zoned with five major themes: i. circulation of energy in nature, ii. electric power and eco-fire plant, iii. future energy, iv roll for future of environment, v. Korea as the leading energy industry. The design has been developed focused on spatial experiences to make 'Design Sequence' with linear circulations haying several important destinations. The interior has been finished with minimal color and materials projected by big sized movie and various LED movie system. Concept of appordance has been used to make interactive experiences between exhibits and visitors.

Cyclic behavior of superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) under various loading conditions

  • The nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (SMA), referred to as Nitinol, exhibits a superelastic effect that can be restored to its original shape even if a significant amount of deformation is applied at room temperature, without any additional heat treatment after removal of the load. Owing to these unique material characteristics, it has widely used as displacement control devices for seismic retrofitting in civil engineering fields as well as medical, electrical, electronic and mechanical fields. Contrary to ordinarty carbon steel, superelastic SMAs are very resistant to fatigue, and have force-displacement properties depending on loading speed. The change for the mechanical properties of superelastic SMAs are experimentally inviestigated in this study when loading cycle numbers and loading speeds are different. In addition, the standardized force-displacement properties of such superelastic SMAs are proposed with an aim to efficiently design the seismic retrofitting devices made of these materials.

Benthic Organisms and Environmental Variability in Antarctica: Responses to Seasonal, Decadal and Long-term Change

  • Marine organisms in Antarctica live in an environment which exhibits variability in physical processes over a wide range of temporal scales, from seconds to millennia. This time scale tends to be correlated with the spatial scale over which a given process operates, though this relationship is influenced by biology. The way organisms respond to variability in the physical environment depends on the time-scale of that variability in relation to life-span. Short-term variations are perceived largely as noise and probably have little direct impact on ecology. Of much greater importance to organisms in Antarctica are seasonal and decadal variations. Although seasonality has long been recognised as a key feature of polar environments, the realization that decadal scale variability is important is relatively recent. Long-term change has always been a feature of polar environments and may be a key factor in the evolution of the communities we see today.

Single Image Fog Removal based on JBDC and Pixel-based Transmission Estimation

  • In this paper, we present an effective single image fog removal by using the Joint Bright and Dark Channel (JBDC) and pixel-based transmission estimation to enhance the visibility of outdoor images susceptible to degradation due to weather and environmental conditions. The conventional methods include refinement process of coarse transmission with heavy computational complexity. The proposed transmission estimation reveals excellent edge-preserving performance and does not require the refinement process. We estimate the atmospheric light in pixel-based fashion, which can improve the transmission estimation performance and visual quality of the restored image. Moreover, we propose an adaptive transmission estimation to enhance the visual quality specifically in sky regions. Comprehensive experiments on various fog images show that the proposed method exhibits reduced computational complexity and excellent fog removal performance, compared with the existing methods; thus, it can be applied to various fields including real-time devices.

Performance evaluation of steel and composite bridge safety barriers by vehicle crash simulation

  • The performance of full-scale steel and composite bridge safety barriers under vehicle crash is evaluated by using the nonlinear explicit finite element code LS-DYNA. Two types of vehicles used in this study are passenger car and truck, and the performance criteria considered include structural strength and deformation, occupant protection, and post-crash vehicle behavior. It can be concluded that the composite safety barrier satisfies all performance criteria of vehicle crash. Although the steel safety barrier satisfies the performance criteria of occupant protection and post-crash vehicle behavior, it fails to satisfy the performance criterion of deformation. In all performance evaluations, the composite safety barrier exhibits a superior performance in comparing with the steel safety barrier.

  • The results of FLAC3D-based numerical evaluation of the bearing capacity shape factor $s_{\gamma}$ are presented for square and rectangular footings on granular soils. The results confirm a peculiar effect found earlier by Zhu and Michalowski (2005), where for large values of internal friction angle, $s_{\gamma}$ exhibits a peak at some aspect ratio of the footing, and then decreases towards unity at large aspect ratios. The Zhu and Michalowski's results were derived using the finite element program ABAQUS, and the results presented in this note corroborate their earlier findings.
