  • As public concern for fine dust has increased, so too has the interest in fugitive dust. Fugitive dust generated at construction sites, which is then scattered by vehicles moving around the sites, accounts for a significant portion. Small construction sites, which comprise the majority of construction sites, are often not adequately managed, because there are no regulations on fugitive dust for such sites. Therefore, in this study, in order to contribute to the establishment of fugitive dust management regulations on small-scale construction sites and to prepare measures to reduce fugitive dust, we measured and analyzed fugitive dust generated at small-scale building sites in Seoul. The fluctuations of fugitive dust generated at small-scale sites over time were checked, and the relatively low concentration when measured behind fences and railings suggested that fence installation is an appropriate method of reducing fugitive dust.

  • Infrastructure engineering is a field that supports construction (assembly) as a representative industry that creates high added value and jobs by combining science and technology with knowledge, though its importance is underestimated. According to a report from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Korea), the value-added rate (65.3%) of the engineering industry and the employment inducement coefficient (14 employees per billion won) are three times higher than in manufacturing. In particular, the forward value chain (such as project management and basic design) accounts for less than 10~15% of the total project cost but determines the overall price and quality of the infrastructure facilities. In this study, a work break-down system, design support module and database development method for road design projects for design platform development is presented. Based on the presented development method, a cloud-based infrastructure design platform's prototype is developed. The developed infrastructure engineering platform is expected to provide a web-based design work environment without time/space restrictions and greatly contribute to winning overseas business orders and securing competitiveness.

  • With the increasing use of social media, the occurrence of cyber crimes on social media has also increased. In this paper, we focus on online sexual harassment among various cyber crimes and discuss how social media users use social media to avoid online sexual harassment. Drawing on threat avoidance theory, the factors affecting avoidance motivation were identified. Avoidance motivation was measured based on the affordance of social media, and the influence of the degree of sexualization was tested to examine how environmental factors affect motivation behavior. The results indicated that the more users perceived sexualization on social media, the lower their motivation to avoid sexual harassment. Thus, it is important to create an atmosphere on social media where crime is minimized, and users are able to respond appropriately by continuously managing their accounts on these platforms.

  • Equivalent linear analysis is widely used in estimating local seismic site effects. The soil behavior in the analysis is often assumed to be rate-independent and is not influenced by the seismic loading frequency. Laboratory results, however, indicate that cohesive soil behavior is greatly influenced by the loading frequency. A new equivalent linear analysis method that accounts for the loading frequency dependent soil behavior is developed and used to perform a series of one dimensional site response analyses. Results indicate that while frequency dependent shear modulus has limited influence on computed site response, frequency dependent soil damping greatly filters out high frequency components of the ground motion and thus results in lower response.

  • Domestic construction industry that accounts for nearly 17.5 percent of GDP is one of the major industries that has been leading domestic economy development. However, accumulated negative image such as corruption, fraudulent work and 3D industries shadowing the remarkable achievement is rampant. In order to improve the image for construction industry, this research investigated various cases and activities related to the image enhancement. Cases analyzed include activities of National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) such as 'Build Your Future', 'Construct My Future', 'Positive Image 2004', and so on. Based on the analysis results, a strategic framework to improve the image of Korean construction industry was proposed. It is envisioned that improved image of the industry will positively affect the growth of the construction industry by attracting more qualified human resources.

  • This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.

  • Recent decrease in the availability of experienced skilled labor and a corresponding lack of new entrants has required the need for automating many of the construction equipment used in the construction industry. In particular, excavators are widely used throughout earthwork operations and automating its tasks enables work to be performed with higher productivity and safety. This paper introduces an optimal path generation method which is one of the core technologies required to make "Intelligent" excavators a reality. The method divides a given earthwork area into unit cells, identifies networks created by linking these cells, and identifies the optimal path an excavator should follow to minimize its total transportation costs. In addition, the method also accounts for drainage direction and path continuity to ensure that the generated path considers site specific conditions.

  • To predict the urban growth trend and to prevent the metropolitan problems, it is important to track the spatio-temporal changes in the urban spatial structure. Commuting is inevitable and regular activities emerging in the metropolitan region. Therefore, it can be a useful to examine the interregional interaction and the urban spatial change. The purpose of this study is to investigate the urban interaction between Seoul and cities around Seoul Metropolitan Region, and GIS functions helped analysis and visualized results. An analysis of current commuting data using the Gravity Model suggests that the interaction between Seoul and its peripheral cities has been intensified from 1990 to 2000 and that the urban interaction was closely related to the distance. And the southward distribution of the cities having a strong interaction with Seoul accounts for the imbalance in growing of Seoul Metropolitan Region.

  • The importance of digital forensics in the cloud environment is increasing as businesses and individuals move their data from On-premise to the cloud. Cloud data can be stored on various devices, including mobile devices and desktops, and encompasses a variety of user behavior artifacts, such as information generated from linked accounts and cloud services. However, there are limitations in securing and analyzing digital evidence due to environmental constraints of the cloud, such as distributed storage of data and lack of artifact linkage. One solution to address this is archiving services, and Google's Takeout is prime example. In this paper, user behavior data is analyzed for cloud forensics based on archiving data and necessary items are selected from an investigation perspective. Additionally, we propose the process of analyzing selectively collected data based on time information and utilizing web-based visualization to meaningfully assess artifact associations and multi-behaviors. Through this, we aim to demonstrate the value of utilizing archiving data in response to the increasing significance of evidence collection for cloud data.

  • This study assessed the effectiveness of brand image communication on consumer perceptions of cruelty-free fashion brands. Brand messaging data were gathered from postings on the official Instagram accounts of three cruelty-free fashion brands and consumer perception data were gathered from Tweets containing keywords related to each brand. Web crawling and natural language processing were performed using Python and sentiment analysis was conducted using the BERT model. By analyzing Instagram content from Stella McCartney, Patagonia, and Freitag from their inception until 2021, this study found these brands all emphasize environmental aspects but with differing focuses: Stella McCartney on ecological conservation, Patagonia on an active outdoor image, and Freitag on upcycled products. Keyword analysis further indicated consumers perceive these brands in line with their brand messaging: Stella McCartney as high-end and eco-friendly, Patagonia as active and environmentally conscious, and Freitag as centered on recycling. Results based on the assessment of the alignment between brand-driven images and consumer-perceived images and the sentiment evaluation of the brand confirmed the outcomes of brand communication performance. The study revealed a correlation between brand image and positive consumer evaluations, indicating that higher alignment of ethical values leads to more positive consumer assessments. Given that consumers tend to prioritize search keywords over brand concepts, it's important for brands to focus on using visual imagery and promotions to effectively convey brand communication information. These findings highlight the importance of brand communication by emphasizing the connection between ethical brand images and consumer perceptions.
