화학 및 천연페인트에서 발생되는 TVOCs의 방출강도 특성 연구 (Characteristics of TVOCs Emission Factors from Chemical and Natural Coating Materials)

  • Building materials are composed of very complex chemical compounds, and these indoor building materials discharge very much Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs). We performed the environmental chamber test to investigate the Total VOCs(TVOCs) emission characteristics and emission factors about chemical and natural coating materials. As the result, we concluded that TVOCs emission are high at initial time and decreased in course of time. Natural paint was low emission level for TVOCs than chemical paint by small chamber test. The TVOCs emission factor-time profile showed a good fit with the results from the measured and predicted value.

  • ASPEN PLUS, a steady-state simulator, was used in this study for predicting emissions of VOCs and tracing the fate of all compounds in biodegradation processes. Mathematical models for the processes such as volatilization, reaction and clarification were adopted from literatures. Unlike most previous simulations that various pollutants were considered as a single component, COD or BOD, four components of water, biomass, VOCs and COD were included in this simulation. Sensitivity analysis of several physical parameters on the performance of the WWTP was conducted. Model predictions of VOCs emissions agreed well with the plant data. The simulator could provide design conditions for a future WWTP as well as monitoring/control regimes to an existing WWTP.

대기중 휘발성유기화합물의 시간적 농도 변화에 대한 연구 (The Temporal Distribution Characteristics of Some Important VOC Species from a Nonurban Site in Naju)

  • In this study, the distribution characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were investigated on the seasonal basis across spring, summer, and fall during the year of 1998. According to this analysis, most VOC species investigated exhibited strong temporal trends. Over diurnal scale, there distribution characteristics were affected by seasonal factors strongly. While they showed high day/night ratio pattern during spring, the pattern was reversed during fall. When the seasonal mean values were compared between the two seasons, the spring values were systematically higher than their counterparts in most cases. In addition when our VOC measurement date were compared with those reported from elsewhere, we were able to conclude that the VOC levels in the study area are comparable to the level weakly impacted by the regional emissions of VOCs. Although our data are not sufficient enough to systematically explain the atmospheric distribution and behavior of VOCs, the findings of strong correlations among some of VOC species suggests strong need for investigating their interactions in the earth\`s atmosphere.

  • In recent years, great concern for the improvement of drinking water quality has been arising due to the contamination of the raw and treated water. So trihalomethanes (THMs) and some other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), potential carcinogenic substances, rendered the government to take some countermeasurements for clean water service in the dimension of public health. In this study, we used liquid-liquid extraction method as a rapid simple method for determination of VOCs through eluation with n-Pentane in water. The aim with the present study has been to determine the changes of recovery and reproducibility of the method under the various conditions in extraction solvents, solvent ratio and extraction time, and to observe the concentrations under the various temperature and pH during storage.

휘발성 유기화합물(VOCs)의 촉매산화 전환에서 결합구조의 영향 및 속도특성 (Influence of VOCs Structure on Catalytic Oxidation Kinetics)

  • The reactivity of a range of volatile organic compounds with differing functional groups observed over 0.5% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst. In general, the reactivity pattern observed was alcohols > aromatics > ketones > cycloalkane > alkanes. The deep conversion was increased as reaction temperature was increased. A correlation was found between the reactivity of the individual and the strength of the weakest C-Hbond in structure. The conversion of volatile organic compounds increases in order methanol > benzene > cyclohexane > MEK > n-hexane. That is the effect of differences in total dissociation energy. An apparent zeroth-order kinetics with respect to inlet concentration have been observed. A simple multicomponent model based on two-stage redox model made reasonably good predictions of conversion over the range of parameters studied. thus, the catalytic process was suggested as the new VOCs control technology.

  • In recent days, IAQ(Indoor Air Quality) is regarded as one of the most important environmental factors as well as thermal and acoustic comfort. The purpose of this study was to estimate on effect of indoor air pollution from VOCs and formaldehyde emitted by building materials. As the results, we knew that concentration of Toluene, Xylene, Styrene and HCHO emitted from the furnitures and frame material of windows and doors are high emission factors on indoor air pollution.

  • Ultimate objective of industrial hygiene is the prevention of health impairment that may result from exposure to chemicals at workplace. Workers in solvent thinner-using occupation environment may be highly exposed to VOCs (volatile organic compounds) because solvent thinner has been used extensively such as painting, spraying, degreasing, coating and so on in Korea. The purpose of this study was to recognize, evaluate, and propose the control methods of VOCs from solvent thinner-using workplace. Five target volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, and m-xylene) were monitored in H company of Shiwa Industrial Complex and analyzed in perosnal, occupational indoor and outdoor during working hours simultaneously. Engineering control such as local ventilation should be made in considering the long-term exposure, though measured VOCs concentration did not exceed the workplace exposure standards. In addition, air cleaning device should be installed in local ventilation because Shiwa Industrial Complex has had the serious ambient air pollution. Currently, environmental purification using $TiO_2$ photocatalyst have attracted a great deal of attention with increasing number of recent environmental problems. In this study, $TiO_2$ sol coated on the ceramic bead was prepared by sol-gel method and the photodegradation of target compounds was investigated in gas phase by the exposure to UV-A lamp(365nm) in a batch system.

실내식물의 휘발성유기화합물질 정화에 관한 연구 (Purification Ability of Indoor Plants for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs))

  • The purification ability of indoor plants for volatile organic compounds was investigated. Philodendron selloum and Spathiphyllum sp. were tested for removal of toluene and trichloroethylene in the artificially contaminated reactor under laboratory conditions. Each plant was placed in right side of the reactor and the TCE and toluene concentration change with time were monitored. In the reactor with Philodendron, the TCE concentrations of left and right sides were compared to examine the removal effects by plant. In the reactor with Spathiphyllum, air was circulated before sampling, and thus average removal effects by plants on target VOC were observed. Both plants showed clear effects on removal of VOCs from contaminated indoor air. The removal efficiency of Philodendron and Spathiphyllum were similar and showed 30 - 46% and 31 - 47% of purification effects, respectively. The results of this study showed that air purification using plants is an effective means of reduction on indoor VOCs concentration level and reduce related health risk though, supplementary purifying aids or proper ventilation were also suggested.

  • Excessive amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odorants discharged into the environment are highly dangerous to human health as well as to ecological systems. Biological treatments of waste gas streams, called biofiltration, containing VOCs and odorous compounds has gained much attention because biofilters are more cost effective and environmentally friendly than conventional air pollution control technologies. This review provides an overview of biotrickling filtration, which is a type of biofiltration including continuous trickled-water flow inside filter media, for VOC and odor abatement. The configuration, design, cost effectiveness, removal capacity and environmental impact of this techniques and the future research and development needs in this area are all considered.

광촉매반응을 이용한 VOCs의 촉매산화 (Catalytic Oxidation of VOCs using Photocatalysis)

  • This study was progressed in photocatalysis of VOCs using $UV/TiO_2$ which was a benign process environmentally. The experiments were peformed to know photodegradation characteristics as crystalline structure of $TiO_2$ which had anatase, rutile and P-25 (anatase : rutile = 70 : 30). The main purpose of this study was to identify photocatalytic characteristics as inlet concentration of reactants, $H_2O$, and residence time. The inlet concentration of VOCs was changed 50, 100 and 200 ppmv, and amount of $H_2O$ was changed 0, 500 and $1000{\;}mg/m^3$, respectively. The deep conversion was increased as the inlet concentration decreased, and the amount of $H_2O$ increased. The deep conversion of benzene had the highest value at $1000{\;}mg/m^3${\;}H_2O$ and 50 ppmv of inlet concentration. The reactivity of reactants was decreased in order benzene > toluene > m-xylene. Also, the photocatalytic deep conversion was increased as residence time increased, because the contact time between reactants and catalyst was increased. In this study, intermediates had not found by GC/MSD analysis. Therefore, the reactants were completely converted to $H_2O{\;}and{\;}CO_2$.
