Small-Size and High-Isolation MIMO Antenna for WLAN

  • A small-sized ($15mm{\times}30mm$) planar monopole MIMO antenna that offers high-isolation performance is presented in this letter. The antenna is miniaturized using inductive coupling within a meander-line radiator and capacitive coupling between a radiator and an isolator. High isolation is achieved by a T-shaped stub attached to the ground plane between two radiators, which also contributes to the small size using a folded structure and the capacitive coupling with radiators. The proposed antenna operates for the WLAN band within 2.4 GHz to 2.483 GHz. The measured isolation (S21) is about -30 dB, and the envelope correlation coefficient is less than 0.1.

  • In this paper, we develop a simple but very effective 4 by 4 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna system for mobile phones consisting of different types of antennas to achieve low correlation property at the frequency ranges of 1710 to 2170 MHz, which covers wide LTE service bands, from band 1 to band 4. The proposed antenna system consists of two pair of antennas. Each pair consists of a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) and a coupling antenna which has the property of the loop. The use of two different antenna types of IFA and a coupling achieves high isolation. Proposed antenna system occupies relatively small area and positions at the four corners of a printed circuit board. The gap between the two antennas is 4 mm, in order to realize the good isolation performance. To evaluate the performance of our proposed antenna system, we perform various experiments. The proposed antenna shows a wide operating bandwidth greater than 460 MHz with isolation between the feeding ports higher than 17.5-dB. It also shows that the proposed antenna has low Envelop Correlation Coefficient (ECC) values smaller than 0.08 over the all desired frequency tuning ranges.

  • 최근 국내외 주요 이동통신 사업자들이 본격적으로 4G 무선표준 방식인 LTE (Long Term Evolution) 서비스를 시작 하면서 LTE 방식을 지원하는 이동단말의 MIMO (Multi Input-Multi Output) OTA (Over The Air) 성능 평가 방법의 필요성이 중요해 지고 있다. LTE 방식은 high packet data rate을 기반으로 한 무선 데이터 서비스이므로 LTE 단말의 Downlink Data throughput 향상을 위한 MIMO 안테나 설계가 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project)에서 논의되고 있는 MIMO OTA 측정 시스템 중 하나인 Anechoic chamber 방식에 기반 한 MIMO OTA test system 시스템에 대한 이론 및 실험적인 검증을 수행하고 기존의 antenna의 성능 평가 방법과의 비교를 통해 데이터의 유효성을 검증하였다.
