In this paper, a comparison between different methods to combine predictions from neural networks will be given. These methods are bagging, bumping, and balancing. Those are based on the analysis of the ensemble generalization error into an ambiguity term and a term incorporating generalization performances of individual networks. Neural Networks and AI machine learning models are prone to overfitting. A strategy to prevent a neural network from overfitting, is to stop training in early stage of the learning process. The complete data set is spilt up into a training set and a validation set. Training is stopped when the error on the validation set starts increasing. The stability of the networks is highly dependent on the division in training and validation set, and also on the random initial weights and the chosen minimization procedure. This causes early stopped networks to be rather unstable: a small change in the data or different initial conditions can produce large changes in the prediction. Therefore, it is advisable to apply the same procedure several times starting from different initial weights. This technique is often referred to as training ensembles of neural networks. In this paper, we presented a comparison of three statistical methods to prevent overfitting of neural network.

The experimental study on the ducted fan for the propulsion system of a small UAV has been performed. In this paper, to investigate the three-dimensional unsteady flow field characteristics of the ducted fan, it was measured by using a $45^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire from hub to tip at inlet, behind the rotor and outlet of the ducted fan. The hot-wire signal data was acquired at fixed yaw angle. The data was averaged by using the PLEAT (Phase Locked Ensemble Averaging Technique), and then three of non-linear equations were solved simultaneously by using the Newton-Rhapson numerical method. Flow characteristics such as tip vortex, secondary flow and tip leakage flow were confirmed through axial, radial and tangential contour plot.

Currently, a new generation of ducted fan UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) is under development for a wide range of inspection, investigation and combat missions as well as for a variety of civil roles like traffic monitoring, meteorological studies, hazard mitigation etc. The current study presents extensive results obtained experimentally in order to investigate the tip clearance effects on performance characteristics of a ducted fan for small UAV systems. Three ducted fans having different tip clearance gap and with same rotor size were examined under three different yawed conditions of calibrated slanted hot-wire probe. Three dimensional velocity flow fields were measured from hub to tip at outlet of the ducted fan. The analysis of data were done by PLEAT (Phase locked Ensemble Averaging Technique) and three non-linear differential equations were solved simultaneously by using Newton -Rhapson numerical method. Flow field characteristics such as tip vortex and secondary flow were confirmed through axial, radial and tangential velocity contour plots. At the same time, the effects of tip clearance on axial thrust and input power were also investigated by using wind tunnel measurement system. For enhancing the performance of ducted fan, tip clearance level should be as small as possible.

A new method of laser remote sensing is proposed, based on sensing the sea surface by a narrow laser beam (2-3cm) and analyzing statistically specular reflections. Construction of the angular dependency of the average density of specks versus the aircraft flight horizontal azimuth allows calculation of both intensity and azimuthal properties of the sea surface spectrum. The paper contains the experimental setup and technique, the field measurement data taken onboard an aircraft and the examples of calculated main statistical parameters of sea waves. Their energy-carrying component velocity is found by the mean velocity of an ensemble of specular points at the random sea surface. The surface wave nonlinearity is shown to affect substantially the statistical characteristics measured: mean numbers of specular areas with th given elevation and given slope, arranged along the line of crossing the sea surface by the scanning laser beam. Experimental measurement of a variance in the number of these areas yields a principal possibility to calculate the correlation function of the sea surface without its preliminary modeling.
The effects of free surface on wake behind a rotating propeller were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel with the variation of water depth. Instantaneous velocity fields were measured using two-frame PIV technique at tow different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the phase-averaged flow structure in the wake region. For an isolated propeller, the flow behind the propeller is influenced by the propeller rotation and the free surface. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the potential wake and the viscous wake are formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between the tip vortices and the slipstream causes the oscillating trajectory of tip vortices. Tip vortices are generated periodically and the slipstream contracts in the near-wake region. The presence of free surface affects the wake structure largely, when the water depth is less than 0.6D. The free surface modifies the vortex structure, especially the tip and trailing vortices and flow structure in slipstreams of the propeller wake behind X/D = 0.3.
In the present study, a micro holographic PTV (HPTV) system was used to experimentally investigate the structure of 3D flow within a curved micro-tube with varying Dean number. The employed HPTV system incorporated a high-speed digital camera to measure the temporal evolution of the 3D velocity fields of micro-scale fluid flows. With increasing Dean number, flow in the curved tube is transformed from a steady flow to a secondary flow with two counter-rotating vortices. In this study, to analyze the 3D flow characteristics in the curved section of tube at a high Dean number, the trajectories of fluid particles were obtained experimentally using the whole 3D velocity field data obtained by the micro HPTV technique. The mean velocity field distribution was then obtained by ensemble averaging the instantaneous velocity fields. These results would be helpful in the design of various passages within micro-scale devices or micro-chips and in understanding the mixing phenomena that occur in curved conduits along the trajectories of fluid particles.

The flow characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were experimentally investigated using a single-frame PIV system. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle diameter was about Re=5$\times$10$^3$. The instantaneous velocity fields in the streamwise plane passing the jet axis were measured in the near field X/D <11 with and without the temperature gradient. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous velocity fields, the spatial distributions of mean velocity, vorticity, and higher-order statistics up to third order were obtained. The temperature difference of 10$\^{C}$ does not affect a significant influence to the flow structure in the near field, but the total entrainment rate is increased slightly. The entrainment rate shows a linear variation with the streamwise distance in the region after X/D=5.0.
The characteristics of flow around a rotating propeller were investigated using PIV technique. For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.
Nonlinear state estimation is a desirable and required technique for many situations in engineering (e.g., aircraft/spacecraft tracking, space situational awareness, collision warning, radar tracking, etc.). Due to high standards on performance in these applications, in the last few decades, there was an increasing demand for methods that are able to provide more accurate results. However, because of the mathematical complexity introduced by the nonlinearities of the models, the nonlinear state estimation uses techniques that, in practice, are not so well-established which, leads to sub-optimal results. It is important to take into account that each method will have advantages and limitations when facing specific environments. The main objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview and interpretation of the most well-known methods for nonlinear state estimation with Gaussian priors. In particular, the Kalman filtering methods: EKF (Extended Kalman Filter), UKF (Unscented Kalman Filter), CKF (Cubature Kalman Filter) and EnKF (Ensemble Kalman Filter) with an aerospace perspective.

Turbulent wake behind a ship propeller has been investigated using the adaptive hybrid 2-frame PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry). 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured according to 4 different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the vortical structure of near wake within one propeller diameter downstream. The phase averaged mean velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. As the tip vortex evolves downstream, the slipstream is contracted and the turbulent intensity is decreased with viscous dissipation and turbulent diffusion.
