The development of an enrichment method for the rapid and effective identification of Salmonella spp. in sewage or food was studied. As a growth factor for Salmonella, 10 mM cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in trypticase soy broth with 0.6% yeast extract (TSBYE) increased cell number five-folds and 0.6% yeast extract in selenite broth increased cell number ten-folds of control. Bile salts in selenite broth was tested for the selection of S. enteritidis in a mixture with Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactobacillus plantarum and Escherichia coli. The latter four strains were effectively inhibited at 0.1% bile salt. A two-step culture method was used to enrich Salmonella spp.; a primary-enrichment and secondary- enrichment culture. At a primary-enrichment step, selenite broth with 0.6% yeast extract and 10 mM cAMP was used, and at a secondary-enrichment step, 0.1% bile salt was additionally used. Culture times of a primary- enrichment and a secondary-enrichment step were 8 hr and 6 hr, respectively. In this procedure, cell number increased from 10$^{0.3}$ to 10$^{8.5}$ with inhibition of other strains within 14 hr. In the case of an initial cell concentrarion as low as 10$^{-2}$ cfu/ml, a cell number increased to 10$^{7}$ cfu/ml by using a 10 hr primary-enrichment and 6 hr secondary-enrichment procedure.

This paper aims to critically analyse and synthesise existing knowledge concerning the use of environmental enrichment and its effect on behavior, physiology and performance of pigs housed in intensive production systems. The objective is also to provide clarity as to what constitutes successful enrichment and recommend when and how enrichment should be used. Environmental enrichment is usually understood as an attempt to improve animal welfare and to a lesser extent, performance. Common enrichment objects used are straw bedding, suspended ropes and wood shavings, toys, rubber tubings, colored plastic keys, table tennis balls, chains and strings. These substrates need to be chewable, deformable, destructible and ingestible. For enrichment to be successful four goals are essential. Firstly, enrichment should increase the number and range of normal behaviors; secondly, it should prevent the phenomenon of anomalous behaviors or reduce their frequency; thirdly, it should increase positive use of the environment such as space and fourthly it should increase the ability of the animals to deal with behavioral and physiological challenges. The performance, behavior and physiology of pigs in enriched environments is similar or in some cases slightly better when compared with barren environments. In studies where there was no improvement, it should be borne in mind that enriching the environment may not always be practical and yield positive results due to factors such as type of enrichment substrates, duration of provision and type of enrichment used. The review also identifies possible areas that still need further research, especially in understanding the role of enrichment, novelty, breed differences and other enrichment alternatives.

The practical significance of using a selective enrichment procedure for detecion and enumeration of salmonella is well recognized. There are still various selective enrichment media has been communly used. Early years selenite broth was recomnended as an enrichment media for the isolating of salmonella. Hajna introduced a modified tetrathionate broth and demonstrated the greater efficiency to compare with the previous enrichment media. Raj also described that the new medium called dulcitol selenite enrichment and has been found to be very satisfactory, especially general implication in food poisoning. Authors tried to compare these 3 enrichment media for isolating salmonella. 1. When salmonella strains were inoculated $1{\sim}10^6$ cells per tube to these 3 enrichment media, mostly similar results were obtained between selenite broth and DS broth. In these 2 enrichment broth were showed $10^7/ml-10^8/ml$ cells of all tested salmonella strains. But in the case of TT broth it was found that the growth was $10^3/ml{\sim}10^4/ml$ cells for tested strain. 2. When E. coli, Proteus, Citrobacter were inoculate $10{\sim}10^6$ cells per tube to these 3 enrichment media. It was suggested that DS broth was showed more inhibitory action than that of selenite broth. TT broth showed high inhibition to these 3 organisms tested. 3. It was generally known that the incubation time is influenced to the frequency of salmonella detection. For this tendency, DS broth and selenite broth were showed similar results within 24 hrs to 48hrs incubation to the test. But DS broth showed more inhibitory action to E. coli and Proteus than that of selenite broth. 4. When $1{\sim}10$ cells were inoculated(per tube) to these 3 enrichment media, DS broth was found to be more sensitive than that of selenite broth.

Purpose: Adolescents who experienced the alcohol consumption have gradually increased. Adolescence is a critical period of the neural plasticity in the brain. Neural plasticity is mediated by neurotrophins and has an impact on cognitive function. Environmental enrichment ameliorates the cognitive function and increases neurotrophins. Thus, we investigated the neuroprotective effect of environmental enrichment on ethanol induced cognitive impairment in adolescent rats. Methods: The ethanol groups and the controls groups were injected with ethanol (0.5g/kg) and phosphate buffered saline, respectively, through intraperitoneal from 28th day of birth for 11 days. The environmental enrichment groups were provided larger cages containing toys than the standard cage. Passive avoidance test and Y-maze test were performed to evaluate the spatial memory. Results: Environmental enrichment+ethanol group showed higher alterations than the standard environment+ethanol group in Y-maze test (p<.05). In hippocampus, The environmental enrichment+ethanol group showed significantly higher level of the number of c-fos positive celsl and density of tropomyosin receptors kinase B receptor than the standard environment+ethanol group (p<.05). Conclusion: So, we suggested that the environmental enrichment played a role as a prophylaxis for prevention of memory impairment induced by ethanol exposure in adolescence.

We investigated the distribution of organic matter and trace metals in surface sediment from Tonyeong coast. To determine the status of trace metal pollution, we also conducted an ecological risk assessment. Relatively high concentration of TN (total nitrogen), TOC (total organic carbon), and AVS (acid volatile sulfide) was found in surface sediment located in the narrow channel (site 35-38). Spatial distribution of Cd, Cr, Ni, Co, Hg, and Zn in surface sediment was similar and high Cu concentrations were found in narrow channel. The assessment of heavy metal pollution was derived using the Enrichment factors (EF). The enrichment factor indicated that Cd was no enrichment (EF<1), Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, Zn, and Hg were minor enrichment (1
Numerical simulations are conducted at atmospheric pressure in order to understand the effect of the oxygen enrichment level on structure of $CH_4/O_2/N_2$ premixed flames. Under several equivalence ratios the flame speeds are calculated and compared with those obtained from the experiments, the results of which are in good agreement. The effects of the oxygen enrichment are investigated on flames under fuel-rich conditions. As the oxygen enrichment level is increased from 0.21 to 1, the flame speed and the temperature are increased. The emission index of $CO_2$ is decreased in cases of flames for fuel rich mixtures, so the efficiency of combustion may be decreased. The maximum emission index of NO is obtained for 0.6 of the oxygen enrichment level.

Tetrachloroethylene(PCE) dechlorination was investigated in an anaerobic enrichment culture from landfill soil. Anaerobic PCE dechlorinating microorganisms could convert 150mg/L of PCE via trichloroethylene(TCE) to cir-1,2-dichloroethylene(CDCE) within 2 days at the optimum temperature of 30 to 35$^{\circ}C$. The enrichment culture could dechlorinate TCE but did not degrade other chlorinated aliphatic compounds, such as cDCE, trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, 1,1-dichloroethylene, 1,1-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloro- ethane, and 1,1,1-trichloroethane during 5 days incubation. Several isolates from the enrichment culture did not show dechlorinating activity of PCE. Microbial analysis of the dechlorinating enrichment culture by using Polymerase chain reaction-Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) method showed that at least three microorganisms were related to the anaerobic PCE dechlorination in the enrichment
Although offline enrichment of phosphorylated peptides is widely used, enrichment for phosphopeptides using $TiO_2$ is often performed manually, which is labor-intensive and can lead to irreproducible results. To address the problems associated with offline enrichment and to improve the effectiveness of phosphopeptide detection, we developed an automated online enrichment system for phosphopeptide analysis. A standard protein mixture comprising BSA, fetuin, crystalline, ${\alpha}$-casein and ${\beta}$-casein, and ovalbumin was assessed using our new system. Our multidimensional system has four main parts: a sample pump, a 20-mm $TiO_2$-based column, a weak anion-exchange, and a strong cation-exchange (2:1 WAX:SCX) separation column with LC/MS. Phosphorylated peptides were successfully detected using the $TiO_2$-based online system with little interference from nonphosphorylated peptides. Our results confirmed that our online enrichment system is a simple and efficient method for detecting phosphorylated peptides.
We investigated the effects of enrichment with oil or bacteria on the fatty acid composition of rotifers and Artemia as live prey. One enrichment(oil source) was mainly composed of squid Todarodes pacificus liver oil; the other(photosynthetic-bacterial source) was primarily made up of Schizochytrium sp. The enrichments were intended to enhance the nutritional value of the live prey, such as their EPA, DHA and n-3 HUFA contents. The lipid content as EPA and DHA of rotifers was higher when enriched with the oil source rather than the photosynthetic-bacterial source. The DHA content of Artemia nauplii after enrichment differed significantly, depending on the type of enrichment used(P<0.05). When the Artemia nauplii were enriched with the oil source, the DHA content was increased to 16.8%, whereas it increased only to 1.1% when enriched with the photosynthetic-bacterial source. These results indicate that selection of the enrichment is important for Artemia nauplii but not for rotifers.
To evaluate the recovery rates to increase toxigenic C. difficile, the selective enrichment broth culture methods were compared with commonly used cytotoxin assays and toxigenic culture. First, the enrichment culture, using the selective medium broth for 2 to 5 days, was performed and then, toxigenic C. difficile was confirmed by C. difficile toxin gene-specific PCR after being cultured on C. difficile selective agar. The sensitivity of C. difficile from the enrichment culture (100%) was higher than that of C. difficile selective agar culture (93.8%), while positive predictive values (PPV) were low; 72.7% (16/22) and 88.2% (15/17). PPV of the enrichment culture are not high. Recently, combinations of C. difficile selective agar culture, C. difficile A & B assays, glutamate dehydrogenase, and nucleic acid amplification method are widely used. The enrichment culture was disadvantageous in PPV, turn-around time, and cost. So, what we performed is not considered as a common method of diagnosis of C. difficile-associated diarrhea.
