  • The effects of $CO_2$ enrichment on growth of maize (Zea mays L.) were examined. Parameters analyzed include growth characteristics, yields, photosynthetic rates, evaporation rates and photosynthesis-related characteristics under elevated $CO_2$. The plants were grown in growth chambers with a 12-h photoperiod and a day/night temperature of $28/21^{\circ}C$ at the seedling stage and $30/23^{\circ}C$ from the silking stage. The plants were exposed to two elevated $CO_2$ of 500, 700ppm and ambient levels (350 ppm). Chalok 1 and GCB 70 germinated three days after seeding, and germination rates were faster in the elevated $CO_2$ than the control. Germination rates displayed significant differences among the $CO_2$ treatments. At the seedling stage, leaf area, top dry weight, and photosynthetic rates, and plant height indicated positive relationship with elevated $CO_2$ concentrations. At the $5{\sim}6$ leaf stage, $CO_2$ concentration also indicated positive relationship with plant height, leaf area, top dry weight, and photosynthetic rates. At the silking stage, increased plant height of Chalok 1 was noted in the $CO_2$ treatments compared to the control. No significant differences were noted for GCB 70, in which leaf area decreased but photosynthetic rates increased progressively with $CO_2$ concentration. Stomatal aperture was a little bigger in the elevated $CO_2$ than the control. $CO_2$ concentration was negatively related to stomatal conductance and transpiration rates, resulting in high water use efficiency.

  • Trapiche project corresponds to the advanced exploration stage which is thought to be a part of various porphyry copper deposits occurring in the margin of Andahuyalas-Yauri metallogenic belt. This deposit is genetically related to the monzonitic porphyry intrusion and Oligocene breccia pipe. Mineralization consists of primary sulfides such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and molybdenite and secondary sulfides such as chalcocite, covellite and digenite. It occurs malachite, tenorite and cuprite as copper oxide. As a result of lixiviation or enrichment process, mineralization shows untypical zonation structure. Breccia and porphyry areas characterize the vertical zonation patterns. In the northern area, lixiviation zone, secondary enrichment zone, transitional zone and primary mineralized zone are distributed in northern area. In the western area of deposit, oxidation zone and mixed zones are narrowly occurred. Inferred resources of deposit is estimated to be 920 Mt @ 0.41% Cu with the cut-off grade of 0.15%.

  • In this study, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to measure the concentrations of about 30 trace elements in airborne particulate (PM2.5) samples at urban area of Daejeon city located in the southwestern region of Korea. An inspection of the measurement data indicates that the distribution patterns of trace elements could clearly distinguish the elements with their concentrations ranging over five orders of magnitude. The mean values for Lu and Dy were found to be the lowest at values of 0.01 and $0.04ng/m^3$, while those for K and Fe showed the highest value of 671 and $653ng/m^3$, respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that PM2.5 concentrations can exhibit much more enhanced correlations with the elements of earth crustal components. The results of factor analysis further indicated that there are no more than six factors with statistical significance, which may exert dominant roles in regulating the elemental concentration levels in the study area. Enrichment factor analysis supports explicit interpretation of results found by this factor analysis.

  • The effects of hydrogen enrichment to methane on NOx formation have been investigated with swirl stabilized pre-mixed hydrogen enriched methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor(nominally of 5,000 kcal/hr). The hydrogen enriched methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame stability was examined for different amount of hydrogen addition to the methane fuel, different combustion air flow rates and swirl strengths by comparing equivalence ratio at the lean flame limit. The hydrogen addition effects and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using gas analyzers, and OH chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about species concentration of emission gases and flowfield. The results of NOx and CO emissions were compared with a diffusion flame type combustor. The results show that the lean stability limit depends on the amount of hydrogen addition and the swirl intensity. The lean stability limit is extended by hydrogen addition, and is reduced for higher swirl intensity at lower equivalence ratio. The addition of hydrogen increases the NOx emission, however, this effect can be reduced by increasing either the excess air or swirl intensity. The NOx emission of hydrogen enriched methane premixed flame was lower than the corresponding diffusion flame under the fuel lean condition.

  • In mass production of larval rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, high mortality had been observed frequently. This may be the consequence of the low nutritional quality of the live feeds used. This experiment was designed to find out a suitable diet for the mass production of rockfish larvae. Three kinds of live feeds were tested ; plutei of sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus), L-type rotifers (Brachionus plicatiilis) and Artemia naupii. The latter two were enriched with ${\omega}$-yeast, Spirulina platensis and Super Selco before feeding to rockfish larvae. The sea urchin plutei caused to poor survival and growth rates for larval rockfish, and therefore, they were not seemed as proper feed for rockfish larvae. Enrichments of rotifers and Artemia nauplii with ${\omega}$-yeast, Spirulina platensis, or Super Selco improved survival and growth rate. But, rotifers enriched with Super Selco resulted in better rockfish larvae survival than those enriched with ${\omega}$-yeast. A sudden increase of mortality occurred around 11 days after birth. In this critical period, a shift feed such as Artemia nauplii had been supplemented with rotifers. After this critical transition period, the moratality gradually decreased by feeding Artemia nauplii enriched with PUFA. Feeding of mixed feed with rotifers and Artemia nauplii resulted in better larval survival and growth than those of each live food alone.

  • Using a column of macrorecticular gel beads impregnated with alcohol solution of diphenylcarbarzide (DPC), the enrichment of Cr(Ⅵ) ion in 0.1M sulfuric acid was investigated. The column performance was compared with respect to the types of solid support such as Amberlite XAD and Diaion HP. Diaion HP-20 was found to be most suitable for this purpose. The break through point was increased when increasing the amount of DPC absorbed in the resin and the concentrated sample solution showed higher break through capacity than the dilute one. The extraction of Cr(Ⅵ) was not affected by the presence of 100 ppm Fe(Ⅲ) which amounted to ten times of 10 ppm Cr(Ⅵ) and the presence of other metal ions which amounted to 100 times of 10 ppm Cr(Ⅵ). Because the used gel particles were effectively regenerated with methanol, they were able to be used repeatedly.

  • The in-core fuel management problem was studied by use of the calculus of variations. Two functions of interest to a public power utility, the profit function and the cost function, were subjected to the constraints of criticality, the reactor turnup equations and an inequality constraint on the maximum allowable power density. The variational solution of the initial profit rate demonstrated that there are two distinct regions of the reactor, a constant power region and a minimum inventory or flat thermal flux region. The transition point between these regions is dependent on the relative importance of the profit for generating power and the interest charges for the fuel. The fuel cycle cost function was then used to optimize a three equal volume region reactor with a constant fuel enrichment. The inequality constraint on the maximum allowable power density requires that the inequality become an equality constraint at some points in the reactor. and at all times throughout the core cycle. The finite difference equations for reactor criticality and fuel burnup in conjunction with the equality constraint on power density were solved, and the method of gradients was used to locate an optimum enrichment. The results of this calculation showed that standard non-linear optimization techniques can be used to optimize a reactor when the inequality constraints are properly applied.

  • A test is made for a method to determine reliable bias in the criticality safety analysis of spent fuel storage pool with turnup credit between the reference and rack criticality calculation methods. The spent fuel pool of Kori Unit 1 is conceptually redesigned to the most compact rack with turnup credit, and its multiplication factors are calculated depending on fuel enrichment and burnup, by the Monte Carlo code KENO-IV as a reference and by a two-dimensional collision probability code FATAC as a practical method. Then, the computed values with the help of the above two computer codes are compared to evaluate the bias and its trend in terms of multiplication factor on fuel enrichment and turnup. The result indicates that the bias can be determined with reliability basis but without any disadvantage in criticality safety margin compared with the conventional method.

  • Bacteria that mediate the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium (anammox) have been detected in natural ecosystems, as well as various wastewater treatment systems. In this study, sludge from a particular landfill leachate anaerobic treatment system was selected as the incubation seed for anammox microorganism enrichment owing to its possible anammox activity. Transmission electron microscopy observation, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis, and cloning/sequencing techniques were applied to identify the diversity of anammox microorganisms throughout the incubation. During the early stage of operation, the diversity of anammox microorganisms was similar to the original complex microbes in the seed sludge. However, as incubation time increased, the anammox microorganism diversity within the system that was originally dominated by Candidatus (Ca.) Brocadia sp. was replaced by Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus. The domination of Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus produced a stable removal of ammonia (70 mg-N/l) and nitrite (90 mg-N/l), and the total nitrogen removal efficiency was maintained at nearly 95%. The fluorescence in situ hybridization results showed that Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus was successfully enriched from $1.8{\pm}0.6%$ initially to $65{\pm}5%$ after 481 days of operation. Therefore, the present results demonstrated the feasibility of enriching Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus from leachate sludge, even though the original cell count was extremely low. Application of this seldom found anammox organism could offer an alternative to current ammonia-nitrogen treatment.

  • We measured grain size, organic matter, and metallic elements (Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn, Hg, and As) in intertidal sediments collected from six islands in the western part of Jellanam Province in order to evaluate heavy metal contamination in the tidal flat sediments of coastal islands. The evaluation of metal contamination was carried out using geochemical assessment techniques such as sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), enrichment factor (EF), and geoaccumulation index ($I_{geo}$). Surface sediments were classified into four sedimentary facies: sand, gravelly muddy sand, slightly gravelly mud, and silt. The concentrations of heavy metals in intertidal sediments from Jaeun, Amtae, Biguem, and Docho islands showed good positive correlations with mean grain size and ignition loss, indicating that the concentrations of metallic elements in these sediments were dependent on grain size and the organic matter content. The concentrations of heavy metals in sediments from almost all of the stations were lower than two criterion values proposed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the United States. Based on the EF and $I_{geo}$ results, surface sediments were a little polluted for Cr and were moderately polluted for As. Our results suggest that more intensive studies are necessary in the future in order to determine the major source of As in intertidal sediment and to evaluate the As pollution level in macrobenthos.
