  • In this paper, a new measurement system has been developed for measuring servo errors of CNC machine tools. Unlike the ball link bar method using circular path, the developed system uses two orthogonal straight paths for measurement of errors, giving relatively short test length. For position measurment, linear displacement sensor and steel cube have been designed, and the software for relevant data sampling and error evaluation has been implemented.

  • This paper presents how to develop visual design tools for construction of strut-and-tie models(S (STM). STMs have shown internal force flows for dimensioning and proportioning of D-regions of reinforced concrete structures. In order to select an appropriate strut-and-tie model some interactive graphic tools are necessary to help designers compare alternatives by changing the geometry of initial STM. This study proposes to use force polygons representing the equilibrium state of STM. The change of STM dynamically shows change of force magnitudes by force polygon. Once the geometry of STM is determined the detailing design process is required in the next procedure.

  • Reduction of the aerodynamic drag is one of the most hot issues of car industries. Many researchers have studied in the area of drag reduction methodology using experimental tools or numerical tools. In general, car shape design is the main focus to reduce the drag in aerodynamic research area. However, not many people have studied the aerodynamic interference between running cars to figure out the drag variation. In this research, the aerodynamic interference between two running cars have been analyzed by using numerical tools, FLUENT 6.2. Several different models of cars and two different distances between two running cars are considered.

  • In vibro-acoustic analysis, the commercial CAE tools, such as SYSNOISE, is usually used to take into account of the coupled effects of fluid acoustics and structural vibration. The acoustic field can be solved by either FEM or BEM, while the vibration field is usually solved by FEM. The interior or exterior acoustic problems with the coupled effects of the structural boundary could be solved by the commercial tools. The commercial tools, however, could not solve the problems in case that both the interior and exterior acoustic field is coupled with the structural boundary. In this paper, a realistic method based on FEM/BEM coupling scheme is presented to analyze the acoustic radiation from the internal source in a chamber to external acoustic field through elastic structural boundary. Several numerical examples are implemented to validate the developed program.

  • In recent years, it has been variously developed for testing the accuracy of circular motion of NC machine tools, for example Telescoping Ball Bar Method by Bryan,Circular Test Method by Knapp and r $_{- \theta}$ Mathod by Tsutsumi etc., but it is not yet settled in the code of measuring methods of motion errors of NC machine tools, because of errors of measuring units and sensors, and also especially the difficulties of centering of measuring units. In this paper, in use of magnetic type linear scale with resolution of 0.5 .mu. m and tick pulses come out from computer, it has become possible for detecting of linear displacement of radial errors and measuring of revolution angle of circular motion of NC machine tools.

  • This paper presents the thermal behavior of a synchronous linear motor with high speed and force. Such a linear motor can successfully replace ball lead screw in machine tools because it has a high velocity, acceleration and good positioning accuracy. On the other hand, low efficiency and high heating up during operation are disadvantage of linear motors. For the application of linear motors to machine tools a water-cooling system is often used. In this research, structure of the linear motor and water cooler is changed to improve the thermal behavior of the linear motor. Some important effects of an integrated cooler, an U-cooler and a thermally symmetrical cooler are presented.

  • This paper described the current status of machine tool technology and its future trends with a particular emphasis on high-speed machining. People in machine tool industry have continuously sought to serve fast-changing manufacturing industry with economical machining solutins. At presents, it appears that more productivity gain is demanded to shorten time-to-market and machining requirements become more stringent. In this regard, this paper firstly addressed a high-speed spindle as a key element for the next-generation machine tools. The sequel to it apparently went to high-speed feed axes and final discussion included the problem of how to optimize overall system including servo function. Lastly a brief look to NC technology including machine intelligence was taken.

  • In order to remain competitive, a manufacturing company needs to maintain the optimal condition of its manufacturing system. Machine tools as an important element of a manufacturing system comprises complex mechanical as well as electronic components. Therefore, diagnosing the troubles of machine tools is a tricky process which requires a lot of experience and knowledge. Since providing machine tool users with necessary services at the right time is very difficult and expensive, a remote diagnosis system is to be regarded as a good alternative, with which users can diagnose and fix the machine troubles. This paper presents a framework for a remote machine tool diagnosis system using the world wide web technology and backward reasoning expert system.

  • The spindle is a very important part of machine tool. The evaluation of spindle motion is required for improving the performance of machine tools. The evaluation tools have been developed for precison spindle by the reversal technique, and 3D error map motion of spindle is proposed. This technique makes us understand the total movement of spindle more easily. The proposed technique has been successfully applied to practical machine tools, giving high potentials for the spindle performance measurement.

  • This paper presents an example of the development of motor drives for machine tools. Machine tools need motor drives with high control precision and performance. We developed a motor drive system that meets these requirements. The converter, the one component of drive system, adopts modular structure and high DC-link voltage. The drive which consists rest part of drive system is developed based on TMS320C32 DSP and state-of-the-art circuit technology. In this paper each developed parts are described in terms of its structure, specification and features.
