  • Until recently, almost all ETFE film structures that have been erected is the cushion type because there are problems at lower allowable strength under elastic range and viscosity behaviour such as creep and relaxation of ETFE films under long-term stresses. But the number of tension type structures is currently increasing. This paper proposes the stretch fabrication of ETFE film to verify the applicability of ETFE films to tensile membrane structures. First of all, to investigate the possibility of application on tensile membrane structures, the stretch fabrication test is carried out, and it is verified that it is possible to increase the yield strength of the film membrane structures. After simulating the experiment also carries out an analytical investigation, and the effectiveness of the elasto-plastic analysis considering the viscous behavior of the film is investigated. Finally, post-aging tension measurement is conducted at the experimental facilities, and the viscosity behavior resulting from relaxation is investigated with respect to tensile membrane structures.

  • Most of the structural forms in which ETFE film is used are the cushion(pneumatic membrane structures) and tension type(tensile membrane structures), which have been generally accepted to be the most efficient forms. Tensile membrane structures are pulled outward from the exterior to introduce initial stress. And such structures offer the advantage of a natural shape formed by tensile stress and eliminate the need for blast air. Recently, the number of tension type structures is increasing. However, there are problems of creep and relaxation of ETFE films under long-term stresses. In this paper, the stretch fabrication method is proposed for stretching the film into the plastic region during initial tensioning as a way to increase its strength. And its effectiveness is confirmed by investigating experimental and analytical test using ETFE films.

  • The development history, the current situation and the future of the performance-based seismic design of building structures in China are presented in this paper. Firstly, the evolution of performance-based seismic design of building structures specified in the Chinese codes for seismic design of buildings of the edition 1974, 1978, 1989, 2001 and 2010 are introduced and compared. Secondly, in two parts, this paper details the provisions of performance-based seismic design in different Chinese codes. The first part is about the "Code for Seismic Design of Buildings" (GB50011) (edition 1989, 2001 and 2010) and "Technical Specification for Concrete Structures of Tall Building", which presents the concepts and methods of performance-based seismic design adopted in Chinese codes; The second part is about "Management Provisions for Seismic Design of Outof-codes High-rise Building Structures" and "Guidelines for Seismic Design of Out-of-codes High-rise Building Structures", which concludes the performance-based seismic design requirements for high-rise building structures over the relevant codes in China. Finally, according to those mentioned above, this paper pointed out the imperfections of current performance-based seismic design in China and proposed the possible direction for further improvement.

  • Vertical earthquake ground motion may magnify vertical dynamic responses of structures, and thus cause serious damage to bridges. As main support structures, piers and bearings play an important role in vertical seismic response analysis of girder bridges. In this study, the pier and bearing are simplified as a vertical series spring system without mass. Then, based on the assumption of small displacement, the equation of motion governing the simply-supported straight girder bridge under vertical ground motion is established including effects of vertical deformation of support structures. Considering boundary conditions, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is applied to discretize the above equation of motion into a MDOF (multi-degree-of-freedom) system. Then seismic responses of this MDOF system are calculated by a step-by-step integration method. Effects of support structures on vertical dynamic responses of girder bridges are studied under different vertical strong earthquake motions. Results indicate that support structures may remarkably increase or decrease vertical seismic responses of girder bridges. So it is of great importance to consider effects of support structures in structural seismic design of girder bridges in near-fault region. Finally, optimization of support structures to resist vertical strong earthquake motions is discussed.

  • Corrosion of rebar is one of the major deteriorating mechanisms that affect the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere leads to early carbonation and deterioration due to corrosion in RC structures. In the present study, an attempt has been made to modify the existing carbonation depth prediction empirical model. The modified empirical model is verified from the carbonation data collected from selected RC structures of CSIR-SERC campus, Chennai and carbonation data available from the reported literature on in-situ RC structures. Attempt also made to study the carbonation depth in the laboratory specimens using oxygen permeability index (OPI) test. The carbonation depth measured from RC structures and laboratory specimens are compared with estimated carbonation depth obtained from OPI test data. The modified empirical model shows good correlation with measured carbonation depth from the identified RC structures and the reported RC structures from the literature. The carbonation depth estimated from OPI values for both in-situ and laboratory specimens show lesser percentage of error compared to measured carbonation depth. From the present investigation it can be said that the OPI test is the suitable test method for both new and existing RC structures and laboratory RC specimens.

  • The objective of this paper is to monitor damage in beam-type structures by using time history of natural frequencies. First, numerical experiments on test beams are described, Dynamic responses of the test structures are obtained for several damage scenarios in a consequent order. Next, the time history of natural frequencies are extracted for the first four modes from the dynamic responses of the test structures. Finally, damage detection in the test structures is performed using the time-history of natural frequencies.

  • This paper describes the work of the Working Group on wind pressure coefficients on low-rise structures, one of the groups set up by the International Association of Wind Engineering in 1999. General aspects of wind loading on low-rise structures are summarized. The definition, derivation and codification of loading coefficients is described. Comparisons of pressure coefficients on low rise structures are made between a selection of wind loading standards. Recommendations for consistency and for the harmonization of these coefficients are given.

  • Modern ocean-going vessels are highly dynamically loaded all-welded structures. Traditionally, this fact has been taken into account in the design of ship structures by keeping the overall stress level within permissible limits and by limiting notch effects in the design of local structures. With an improving knowledge of loads and the rapid development of calculation means more detailed calculation-based methods are increasingly introduced. A brief review on fatigue assessment methods used in the design of ship structures has been given during the 1993 IIW International Conference in Glasgow. The rapid development during recent years underlines the importace of the subject and justifies its extended discussion in this paper.

  • Three types of the coupling structures in combline resonators are presented: magnetic, electric, and mixed coupling structures. The magnetic coupling structure is provided by the window, and the electric coupling is provided by the electric probe. The mixed coupling structure which is the superposition of the magnetic and electric coupling structures, is proposed for the electric coupling in combline resonators with easy tuning capability. The responses of each coupling structure are shown. A 4-pole combline filter is designed and fabricated as an application of those coupling structures, and shows good filter responses.
