A Study on Trainer and Cover Recognition Algorithm for Posture Recognition of Virtual Shooting Trainer (가상 사격 훈련자 자세인식을 위한 훈련자와 엄폐물 인식 알고리즘 연구)

  • The Ministry of National Defense decided to build a realistic combat simulation training system based on virtual reality and augmented reality in accordance with the expansion of the scientific training system of "Defense Reform 2.0". The realistic combat simulation training system should be able to maximize the tension and training effect as in actual combat through engagement between trainers. In addition, it should be possible to increase the effectiveness of survival training at the same time as shooting training similar to actual combat through cover training. Previous studies are suitable techniques to improve the shooting precision of the trainee, but it is difficult to practice bilateral engagement like in actual combat, and it is particularly insufficient for combat shooting training using cover. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a S/W algorithm for generating a virtual avatar by recognizing the shooting posture of the opponent on the screen of the virtual shooting trainer. This S/W algorithm can recognize the trainer and the cover based on the depth information acquired through the depth sensor and estimate the trainer's posture.

Labour of Love: Fan Labour, BTS, and South Korean Soft Power

  • With the steady rise in global popularity of the Korean music group BTS, the South Korean government and surrounding industries have swiftly begun utilizing their image and international recognition for specific nation branding purposes. While K-pop soft power strategies are not novel to the South Korean state, what is new is the rapid speed at which BTS have become a beacon for South Korean culture, language, and symbolism in the international arena. However, few scholarly works have sought to investigate the role fans have played in this heightened position for the group as state representatives, with minimal research conducted into the work fans do within the framework of ARMY fan culture. This paper will thus aim to fill the gap in scholarship on ARMY as an organized labour network, focusing on the role fans play as labourers in online spaces that work to promote, disseminate, and cultivate wider recognition for BTS as artists. Through the conjunct engagement of a political economy framework and theories of participatory culture, this paper will explore the manner through which the free labour of ARMY, premised on affect, has constructed the fandom as active agents of soft power alongside BTS themselves.

  • Recently, the issue has been tangible game environment due to the various interactive interface developments. In this paper, we propose the multi card touch based interactive arcade system by using marker recognition interface and multi-touch interaction interface. For our system, the card's location and orientation information is recognized through DI-based recognition algorithm. In addition, the user's hand gesture tracking informations are provided by the various interaction metaphors. The system provides the user with a higher engagement offers a new experience. Therefore, our system will be used in the tangible arcade game machine.

Interaction Intent Analysis of Multiple Persons using Nonverbal Behavior Features (인간의 비언어적 행동 특징을 이용한 다중 사용자의 상호작용 의도 분석)

  • According to the cognitive science research, the interaction intent of humans can be estimated through an analysis of the representing behaviors. This paper proposes a novel methodology for reliable intention analysis of humans by applying this approach. To identify the intention, 8 behavioral features are extracted from the 4 characteristics in human-human interaction and we outline a set of core components for nonverbal behavior of humans. These nonverbal behaviors are associated with various recognition modules including multimodal sensors which have each modality with localizing sound source of the speaker in the audition part, recognizing frontal face and facial expression in the vision part, and estimating human trajectories, body pose and leaning, and hand gesture in the spatial part. As a post-processing step, temporal confidential reasoning is utilized to improve the recognition performance and integrated human model is utilized to quantitatively classify the intention from multi-dimensional cues by applying the weight factor. Thus, interactive robots can make informed engagement decision to effectively interact with multiple persons. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme works successfully between human users and a robot in human-robot interaction.

Estimating Interest Levels based on Visitor Behavior Recognition Towards a Guide Robot (안내 로봇을 향한 관람객의 행위 인식 기반 관심도 추정)

  • This paper proposes a method to estimate the level of interest shown by visitors towards a specific target, a guide robot, in spaces where a large number of visitors, such as exhibition halls and museums, can show interest in a specific subject. To accomplish this, we apply deep learning-based behavior recognition and object tracking techniques for multiple visitors, and based on this, we derive the behavior analysis and interest level of visitors. To implement this research, a personalized dataset tailored to the characteristics of exhibition hall and museum environments was created, and a deep learning model was constructed based on this. Four scenarios that visitors can exhibit were classified, and through this, prediction and experimental values were obtained, thus completing the validation for the interest estimation method proposed in this paper.

Designing a Project-based Service-Learning Course for Pre-dental Education: A Theoretical Exploration

  • This study is a theoretical exploration of project-based service-learning and its application in designing pre-dental curricula. As a response to the limitation of community service courses, service-learning has been implemented as pedagogy in higher education practices. Service-learning connects service and learning by engaging students in activities that address community needs with intentionally designed learning opportunities while adding value to and transforming both service and learning. Project-based service-learning is an extended and more active version of service-learning. Whereas service activities are arranged by instructors in the original service-learning, project-based service-learning provides students with opportunities for exploring problems and root causes on site and then devising and implementing solutions of their own using their talents and creativity. This study proposes a theoretical approach to project-based service-learning and suggests six design components, namely, related curriculum, reflection, reciprocity, service and community engagement, evaluation and recognition, and creative problem solving. Based on the components, 20 design strategies are formulated. The exploration is aimed to provide design guides for professionals attempting to implement project-based service-learning in higher education.

  • The present work aimed to present the development of 'Funt', the augmented reality-based digital app as an educational tool for foreign language learning. Our work further evaluated the learning efficacy of the tool by the assessment of the three dependent measures including learning motivation, learning satisfaction, and learning involvement. With a learning app of 'Funt', students can use AR app to access recognition-based or location-based experiences such that any objects, artifacts, or media appear to be in the app. Students are then able to interact with the digital content by manipulating it to learn more about it. Students's engagement should also increase when they create their own experience in AR to demonstrate their understanding of a particular concept or words. Learning effects were evaluated on survey data collected from a hundred respondents aging six to nine years. One-group design for pre-test and post-test was utilized to examine the differences of learning efficacy by comparing the non-'Funt' group and the Funt group scores. A pairwise t-Test was performed for pairwise comparisons between two learning groups. The results indicate that the 'Funt' group scored significantly higher than the non-'Funt' group in the measures of learning motivation, learning satisfaction, and learning involvement. Overall, our results suggest that 'Funt' attracted the students' attention, provided them with a fun context to learn English vocabulary, and develop positive motivation and satisfaction towards vocabulary learning through AR technology.

Is Civic Service the Real Antipode of Volunteer Work? - Focusing on AmeriCorps and Senior Corps in the United States (시민서비스는 자원봉사의 대척점에 있는가? - 미국의 AmeriCorps와 Senior Corps를 중심으로)

  • Recently interest in civic engagement and civic service is increasing. However, in Korea, few studies have focused on civic service. This might be on account of general awareness that civic service is fundamentally different from the basic spirit of voluntary work, while interest in paid volunteer work is on the rise. Thus, it is necessary to examine whether civic service is the real antipode of volunteer work. Under this kind of critical viewpoint, this study aims to analyze civic service based on the attributes of voluntary work and civic service. The major findings are as follows. Firstly, contrary to common belief, civic service has not been established to go beyond the principle of voluntary and unpaid characteristics of volunteer work. Rather, some voluntary work has broken out of principle of voluntary activities. Secondly, civic service and volunteer work might be characterized as different not due to spontaneity and unpaid service but the structural characteristics of the goal, continuity and formality. Furthermore, the reason for the soft landing of civic service in the United States is not because they have supported the reimbursement of expenses and the provision of stipends. Rather, it is because their long-term activities have promoted real community development for the purpose of finding solutions to social problems, and they have derived a sense of pride and satisfaction from social recognition and rewards for their contributions.

Regulation of Inflammation by Bidirectional Signaling through CD137 and Its Ligand

  • Although the majority of research on CD137 has been directed to T cells, it is becoming clear that this molecule has distinct functions in other lineages of cells, including non-hematopoietic cells. In particular, emerging evidence suggests that the CD137-its ligand (CD137L) network involving immune cells and non-immune cells, directly or indirectly regulates inflammation in both positive and negative manners. Bidirectional signaling through both CD137 and CD137L is critical in the evolution of inflammation: 1) CD137L signaling plays an indispensible role in the activation and recruitment of neutrophils by inducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells such as macrophages, endothelial cells and epithelial cells; 2) CD137 signaling in NK cells and T cells is required for their activation and can influence other cells participating in inflammation via either their production of proinflammatory cytokines or engagement of CD137L by their cell surface CD137: 3) CD137 signaling can suppress inflammation by controlling regulatory activities of dendritic cells and regulatory T cells. As recognition grows of the role of dysregulated CD137 or CD137L stimulation in inflammatory diseases, significant efforts will be needed to develop antagonists to CD137 or CD137L.

Association of Killer Cell Ig-like Receptor (KIR) with an Adaptor Protein Shc

  • Background: Cytotoxic function of killer cells is inhibited by specific recognition of class I MHC molecules on target cells by inhibitory killer Ig-like receptors (KIR) expressed on NK cells and some cytotoxic T cells. The inhibitory effect of KIR is accomplished by recruitment of SH2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase (SHP) to the phosphotyrosine residues in the cytoplasmic tail. Methods: By in vitro coprecipitation experiments and transfection analysis, we investigated the association of KIR with an adaptor protein Shc in Jurkat T cells. Results: The cytoplasmic tail of KIR appeared to associate with an adaptor protein Shc in Jurkat T celilysates. Similar in vitro experiments showed that phosphorylated KIR cytoplasmic tail bound SHP-1 and Shc in Jurkat T cell lysates. The association of KIR with Shc was further confirmed by transfection analysis in 293T cells. Interestingly, however, Shc appeared to be replaced by SHP-2 upon engagement of KIR in 293T cells. Conclusion: Our data indicate that KIR associate with an adaptor protein Shc in Jurkat T cells, and suggest that KIR might have an additional role which is mediated by this adaptor protein.
