  • With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the amount of energy used in buildings has been increasing due to changes in the energy use structure caused by the massive spread of information-oriented equipment, climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. For the efficient use of energy, it is necessary to have a plan that can predict and reduce the amount of energy use according to the type of energy source and the use of buildings. To address such issues, this study presents a model embedded in a digital twin that predicts energy use in buildings. The digital twin is a system that can support a solution of urban problems through the process of simulations and analyses based on the data collected via sensors in real-time. To develop the energy use prediction model, energy-related data such as actual room use, power use and gas use were collected. Factors that significantly affect energy use were identified through a correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis based on the collected data. The proof-of-concept prototype was developed with an exhibition facility for performance evaluation and validation. The test results confirm that the error rate of the energy consumption prediction model decreases, and the prediction performance improves as the data is accumulated by comparing the error rates of the model. The energy use prediction model thus predicts future energy use and supports formulating a systematic energy management plan in consideration of characteristics of building spaces such as the purpose and the occupancy time of each room. It is suggested to collect and analyze data from other facilities in the future to develop a general-purpose energy use prediction model.

  • As household energy consumption has increased, serious environmental problems, such as resource depletion and global warming, are becoming global issues. It is essential to conduct the energy use of residents living in apartments in order to come up with alternative solutions for energy savings. Therefore, this study examined the energy use awareness of apartment residents and their energy use behavior by various types of awareness. To understand their energy use behavior according to the awareness of the subjects, the energy awareness dimension was created with five factors and they were subject to a cluster analysis; then, the subjects were categorized into three groups. Finally, the difference of energy use behavior was examined by groups of energy awareness. G1 represents the group that is indifferent to energy savings and believes that convenience is an important factor. Also, with respect to energy use behavior, this group tends to pursue convenience. G2 is the group that is conscious of energy use costs thereby enduring some inconvenience, and shows savings behavior in daily life and household affairs. Although, G3 is very aware of the significance for the necessity of energy saving, their energy saving behavior is relatively negative. Regarding these different characteristics of each resident group in their energy saving awareness and behaviors, diverse methods and promotion in energy education are required. Furthermore, an effective energy policy should be established based on the understanding of energy consumption.

  • The research examines individual environmental characteristics, the consciousness energy conservation and behavior level of college students that relate to the experience of taking courses on residential energy use held in college, as well as the influence of experiencing school education in the past. This is to ultimately evaluate the effect of school education on the consciousness of the energy conservation and behavior level of college students at present time, in order to assist in proposing a direction for the school education on residential energy use. The results of the research can be summarized as follows: First, there appeared a gap between the group that has attended courses on residential energy use and the group that has not in terms of their major, school year and the level of consciousness of the need for energy conservation. Second, students that have attended courses on residential energy use in college were reported to have received more training in high school through textbooks and guidance of teachers and have more experience in special education. And third, it appeared that taking courses in residential energy use by college students are influenced by personal factors such as their school year and gender, major, contents of their high school textbooks and the level of consciousness of the need for energy conservation.

  • This paper discusses energy use monitoring and analysis as part of a study on a low-cost energy supply management system that links an existing database with weather information with no real-time monitor for energy demand of buildings using renewable energy, generator and energy storage systems. This study is targeted at small and medium-sized buildings and aims to monitor energy use with a small number of sensors at low cost by applying an energy management system (EMS). The present study can help overcome the limitations of high-cost EMS applied to large commercial and public buildings. We developed current, indoor temperature and human motion sensors and installed them in an office of a company in a sample building. Through these sensors, we analyzed energy use patterns and the effects of weather information and human motion on the energy use. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlations between the total KEPCO energy use of the sample building and weather by comparing these two data. The results showed that the office energy use of a company was more affected by human motions than by weather information. The comparison between the total energy use of the Building and weather information found that external temperature had an effect on the energy use.

  • Useful continuous sensing applications are increasingly emerging as a new class of mobile applications. Meanwhile, open, multi-use sensor devices are newly adopted beyond smartphones, and provide huge opportunities to expand potential application categories. In this upcoming environment, uncoordinated use of sensor devices would cause severe imbalance in power consumption of devices, and thus result in early shutdown of some sensing applications depending on power-hungry devices. In this paper, we propose EnergyCordy, a novel inter-device energy use coordination system; with a system-wide holistic view, it coordinates the energy use of concurrent sensing applications over multiple sensor devices. As its key approach, we propose a relaxed sensor association; it decouples the energy use of an application from specific sensor devices leveraging multiple context inference alternatives, allowing flexible energy coordination at runtime. We demonstrated the effectiveness of EnergyCordy by developing multiple example applications over custom-designed wearable senor devices. We show that EnergyCordy effectively coordinates the power usage of concurrent sensing applications over multiple devices and prevent undesired early shutdown of applications.

  • The Consultation about Energy Use Plan is prescribed by the Energy Use Rationalization Act. In order to reset Examination Criteria for Energy Use Plan, consultation case analysis from 2001 to 2010 were carried out and National Energy Master Plan was reviewed. This study proposes that Examination Criteria for Energy Use Plan be should divided into Urban & Tourism complex development project and Industrial complex development project for the prevention of civil complain. Also predicts that effect of energy savings calculated by Reset Examination Criteria on $1^{ST}$ energy demand BAU at 2030 is 2.2%, effect of new & renewable energy utilization at 2030 is 3% and the rate of $CO_2$ reduction to greenhouse gas emission BAU at 2020 is 1.1%.

  • Identification of energy use patterns in buildings has a great opportunity for energy saving. To find what energy use patterns exist, clustering analysis has been commonly used such as K-means and hierarchical clustering method. In case of high dimensional data such as energy use time-series, data reduction should be considered to avoid the curse of dimensionality. Principle Component Analysis, Autocorrelation Function, Discrete Fourier Transform and Discrete Wavelet Transform have been widely used to map the original data into the lower dimensional spaces. However, there still remains an ongoing issue since the performance of clustering analysis is dependent on data type, purpose and application. Therefore, we need to understand which data reduction techniques are suitable for energy use management. This research aims find the best clustering method using energy use data obtained from Seoul National University campus. The results of this research show that most experiments with data reduction techniques have a better performance. Also, the results obtained helps facility managers optimally control energy systems such as HVAC to reduce energy use in buildings.

  • The Consultation about Energy Use Plan is prescribed by the Energy Use Rationalization Act. This study calculated the Standard Data for Energy Use Plan of Industry Complex by the 9th Korean Standard Industrial Classification Divisions so that the energy demand reflecting the industrial technology change and characteristics of Manufacturing Divisions would predict. To achieve this aim, analysis on thousands of data in Energy Consumption Report Forms reported from industries which annual consumption of energy exceeds 2,000toe from 2009 to 2010 was carried out. The results showed that calculated overall mean fuel basic unit decrease, electricity basic unit increase and energy basic unit increase compared to that of the Notification No. 2002-130 of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, therefore it means that heat source of energy facilities transferred from fuel to electricity. Also resultingly suggests that the related notification, code etc. are amended as soon as possible.
