  • In pressurized light water reactor fuel assembly, spacer grids support nuclear fuel rods both laterally and vertically. The fuel rods are supported by spacer grid springs and grid dimples that are located in the grid cell. The support system allows for some thermal expansion and imbalance of the fuel rods. The imbalance is absorbed by elastic energy to prevent coolant flow- induced vibration damage. Design requirements are defined and a design process is established. The design process includes mathematical optimization as well as practical design method. The shape of the grid spring is designed to maintain its function during the lifetime of the fuel assembly. A structural optimization method is employed for the shape design. Since the optimization is carried out in the linear range of finite element analysis, the optimum solution is verified by nonlinear analysis. A good design is found and the final design is compared with the initial conceptual design. Commercial codes are utilized for structural analysis and optimization.

  • An assembly sequence is considered to be optimal when is minimizes assembly cost while satisfying assembly constraints. To derive such an optimal sequence for robotic assembly, this paper proposes a method using a simulated annealing algorithm. In this method, an energy funciton is derived inconsideration of both the assembly constraints and the assembly cost. The energy function thus derived is iteratively minimized until no further change in energy occurs. During the minimization, the energy is occationally perturbed probabilistically in order to escape from local minima. The minimized energy yields an optimal assembly sequence. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, case studies are presented for industrial products such as an electrical relay and an automobil alternator. The performance is analyzed by comparing the results with those of a neural network-based method, based upon the optimal solutions of an expert system.

  • This study proposes a method of separating uranium (U) and minor actinides from rare earth (RE) elements in the LiCl-KCl salt system. Several RE metals were used to reduce UCl3 and MgCl2 from the eutectic LiCl-KCl salt systems. Five experiments were performed on drawdown U and plutonium (Pu) surrogate elements from RECl3-enriched LiCl-KCl salt systems at 773 K. Via the introduction of RE metals into the salt system, it was observed that the UCl3 concentration can be lowered below 100 ppm. In addition, UCl3 was reduced into a powdery form that easily settled at the bottom and was successfully collected by a salt distillation operation. When the RE metals come into contact with a metallic structure, a galvanic interaction occurs dominantly, seemingly accelerating the U recovery reaction. These results elucidate the development of an effective and simple process that selectively removes actinides from electrorefining salt, thus contributing to the minimization of the influx of actinides into the nuclear fuel waste stream.

  • We investigate rate scheduling and power allocation problem for a delay constrained CDMA systems. Specifically, we determine an energy efficient scheduling policy, while each user maintains the short term (n time slots) average throughput. We consider a multirate CDMA system where multirate is achieved by multiple codes. Each code can be interpreted as a virtual user. The aim is to schedule the virtual users into each time slot, such that the sum of transmit energy in n time slots is minimized. We then show that the total energy minimization problem can be solved by a shortest path algorithm. We compare the performance of the optimum scheduling with that of TDMA-type scheduling.

  • In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient camera operating scheme to save energy which can be used for mass surveillance cameras. This technique determines how many cameras should be turned on in the consideration of the velocity vector of monitoring targets, which is acquired by DSRC object tracking, the model of the specification of installed cameras, and the road model of installed sites. Also, we address other techniques used to save energy for the surveillance system as well. Throughout performance evaluation, we demonstrate the excellence of our proposed scheme compared with previous approaches.

  • The $[Ru(tpy)_2]Cl_2$ (tpy:2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) complex was synthesized and its structure was confirmed by $^1H$-NMR and elemental analysis. Its binding mode toward DNA was compared with the well-known $[Ru(bpy)_3]Cl_2$ (bpy:2,2-bipyridyl), using isotropic absorption, linear dichroism(LD) spectroscopy, and an energy minimization study. Compared to $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$, the $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex exhibited very little change in its absorption pattern, especially in the MLCT band, upon binding to DNA. Furthermore, upon DNA binding, both Ru(II) complexes induced a decrease in the LD magnitude in the DNA absorption region. The $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex produced a strong positive LD signal in the ligand absorption region, which is in contrast with the $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$ complex. Observed spectral properties led to the conclusion that the interaction between the ligands and DNA bases is negligible for the $[Ru(tpy)_2]^{2+}$ complex, although it formed an adduct with DNA. This conclusion implies that both complexes bind to the surface of DNA, most likely to negatively charged phosphate groups via a simple electrostatic interaction, thereby orienting to exhibit the LD signal. The energy minimization calculation also supported this conclusion.

  • In order to ensure maximum capacity at a given frequency resource, the number of antennas must be increased. The increase in antennas means that such guaranteed channel resources can be used as an increase in channel capacity by aquiring another channel resource. In order to aggregate antennas in such a situation where there are a plurality of antennas, a problem of miniaturizing and integrating antennas must be accompanied. In this situation, in order to efficiently allocate channel resources and antenna resources in limited device resources, the problem of antenna selection and user scheduling was considered and solved together. By numerical simulation results, the proposed algorithm was proven to effectively reduce 34 % power consumption in averagewith increase in antennas.

  • Security has become one of the most important requirements for various devices for multi-sensor based embedded systems. The AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm is widely used for security, however, it requires high computing power. In order to reduce the CPU power for the data encryption of images, we propose a new image encryption module using hardware memoization, which can reuse previously generated data. However, as image pixel data are slightly different each other, the reuse rate of the simple memoization system is low. Therefore, we further apply an approximate concept to the memoization system to have a higher reuse rate by sacrificing quality. With the novel technique, the throughput can be highly improved by 23.98% with 14.88% energy savings with image quality loss minimization.

  • Ferroelectric properties are governed by domain structures and domain wall motions, so it is of significance to understand domain evolution processes under mechanical stress. In the present study, in situ piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) observation under compressive stress was carried out for a near-morphotropic PZT. Both $180^{\circ}$ and $non-180^{\circ}$ domain structures were observed from PFM images, and their habit planes were identified using electron backscatter diffraction in conjunction with PFM data. By externally applied mechanical stress, needle-like $non-180^{\circ}$ domain patterns were broadened via domain wall motions. This was interpreted via phenomenological approach such that the total energy minimization can be achieved by domain wall motion rather than domain nucleation mainly due to the local gradient energy. Meanwhile, no motion was observed from curvy $180^{\circ}$ domain walls under the mechanical stress, validating that $180^{\circ}$ domain walls are not directly influenced by mechanical stress.

  • Harmful exhaust emissions of diesel engines are recognized as main causes of air pollution in these days. But, the direct injection diesel engine is widely used for sake of minimization on energy consumption. Because biodiesel fuel is a renewable and alternative fuel for a diesel engine, its usability is expanded. To investigate the effect of biodiesel fuel(extracted from rapeseed oil) on the characteristics of performance and exhaust emissions in an agricultural diesel engine, the biodiesel fuel derived from rapeseed oil was applied in this study. Smoke emission of esterified rapeseed oil was reduced remarkably by approximately 44.5% at 1500 rpm, full load in comparison with the commercial diesel fuel. The power, torque and brake specific energy consumption of the diesel engine showed very slight differences. It was concluded that esterified rapeseed oil could be utilized effectively as an alternative and renewable fuel for agricultural direct injection diesel engines.
