  • A survey of 43 soil samples collected from southern Korea has shown that nematophagous fungi occurred in a variety of habitats. Nine predatory and two endoparasitic species were isolated. Habitats were classified into four types, i. e., mountain, upland, paddy field and greenhouse. Of these, greenhouse and upland had the highest incidence of nematophagous fungi $(95{\sim}100%)$ compared with mountain (37.5%) and paddy field (16.7%). The most common species was Arthrobotrys oligospora Fres., which was isolated from 25.5% of soil samples. Net forming species were the most abundant (72.5%), followed by constricting ring (10.0%), adhesive hyphae (7.8%), endoparasitic fungi (5.0%), and adhesive knob (4.8%). Nematophagous fungi were isolated move frequently from cultivated soil rather than uncultivated mountainous soil.

  • Nematode destroying-fungi from ginseng field were isolated and then identified on 2% wateragar and malt extract agar media. 1. Six strains of Arthrobotrys sp. and three strains of Harposporium sp. were isolated and identified. 2. Arthrobotrys sp. formed trapping apparatus when they were cultured with Nematode and appeared to be destroying fungi. 3. Harposporium sp. appeared to be endoparasitic fungi. 4. Both Arthrobotrys sp. and Harposporium sp. were grown well on nutrient agar and malt extract agar.

  • The influence of nematodes on nematophagous fungi has seldom been investigated. In the present study, the influence of pinewood nematode on its endoparasitic fungus, Esteya vermicola, was investigated systemically. Although both nematodal metabolite and nematodal homogenate could stimulate and speed up the growth of E. vermicola, the impact of nematodal metabolite was slightly higher than that of nematodal homogenate. In addition, a method was developed to investigate the influence of volatiles, discharged by pinewood nematodes in their metabolic process, on the growth of E. vermicola. Reproductive results were given and confirmed that nematodal volatiles have no influence on the cell growth of E. vermicola. This study may provide information for the application of E. vermicola as biological control agent of pinewood nematode.
