Background: Nasal bone fractures are managed by closed reduction within the 2-week period, and are managed by secondary correction after this time. There is little literature on the delayed reduction for nasal bone fractures beyond the 2-week duration. We report our experience with nasal fractures, which were reduced beyond this period. Methods: A retrospective review was performed for all patients who had undergone closed reduction of isolated nasal bone fracture. Patients were included for having undergone reduction of nasal bone fractures at or more than 2 weeks after the injury. Medical records were reviewed for demographic information, injury mechanism, fracture type, delay in treatment, and cause for delay. Postoperative outcomes were evaluated using computed tomography images. Results: The review identified 10 patients. The average reduction time was 22.1 days. Five of patients underwent reduction between days 15 and 20, and the remaining five patients underwent reduction between days 21 and 41. The postoperative outcomes were excellent in 8 patients and good in 2 patients. Conclusion: Outcomes were superior for nasal fractures with displaced end plates and multiple fracture segments. Our study results appears to support delayed reduction of isolated nasal fractures in the presence of factors that delay bony reunion.
Combustion characteristics of the wood chips(balsa chips) were experimentally investigated with respect to the thermal recycle system of the urban waste. The urban waste contains plastics, vegetable and wood materials. Wood was chosen as an example of the one of the component of urban dust. A small wood chip was burned in a electric furnace by the micro-electric balance. The mass reduction rate was normalized by the initial mass of test piece and the time of volatile combustion end. When the mass of the wood chips(balsa chips) was larger than 0.5g, the combustion similarity was found on the normalized mass reduction rate.

For designing broadcast protocols in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), one of the important goals is to reduce the rebroadcast packets redundancy while reaching all the nodes in network. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic broadcasting mechanism based on selfishness and additional coverage in MANETs. Our approach dynamically adjusts the rebroadcast probability according to the extra covered area and number of neighbor nodes. By these two factors, mobile hosts can be classified into three groups: normal, low selfishness, and high selfishness groups. The nodes in the normal group forward packets for other nodes with high probability, whereas the nodes in the low selfishness group rebroadcast packets with low probability and the nodes in the high selfishness group do not rebroadcast packets. We compared our approach with simple flooding and the fixed probabilistic approach. The simulation results show that the proposed schemes can significantly reduce the number of retransmissions by up to 40% compared simple flooding and fixed probabilistic scheme without significant reduction in the network reachability and end-to-end packet delay.

In this paper, we focus on end-to-end transfer delay improvement by using network coding and propose a scheme where a message is divided into several packets which are network coded generating additional redundancy with the results that the number of transmitted packets increases. In networks with high coefficient of variation of transfer time, increased number of packets could reduce the transfer time of the message to a destination. For the proposed scheme, we investigate the optimum number of divided packets and redundancy considering transfer delay reduction and additional transmission cost caused by using network coding under the restriction of maximum transmission packet size. From the results of the investigation, we see that the proposed scheme is effective in networks having high variability of transfer time and would be very useful and practical especially for the case that expedited deliveries of messages are needed.
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of multiple tiny and power constrained sensors which use radio frequencies to carry out sensing in a designated sensor area. To effectively design and implement reliable WSN, it is critical to consider models, protocols, and algorithms that can optimize energy consumption of all the sensor nodes with optimal amount of packet delivery. It has been observed that deploying a single sink node comes with numerous challenges especially in a situation with high node density and congestion. Sensor nodes close to a single sink node receive more transmission traffic load compared to other sensors, thus causing quick depletion of energy which finally leads to an energy hole and sink hole problems. In this paper, we proposed the use of multiple energy efficient sink nodes with brute force technique under optimized parameters to improve on the number of packets delivered within a given time. Simulation results not only depict that, deploying N sink nodes in a sensor area has a maximum limit to offer a justifiable improvement in terms of packet delivery ratio but also offers a reduction in End to End delay and reliability in case of failure of a single sink node, and an improvement in the network lifetime rather than deploying a single static sink node.
In vehicular safety service, every vehicle broadcasts Basic Safety Message (BSM) periodically to inform neighbor vehicles of host vehicle information. However, this can cause network congestion in a region that is crowded with vehicles resulting in a reduction in the message delivery ratio and an increase in the end-to-end delay. Therefore, it could destabilize the vehicular safety service system. In this paper, in order to improve the congestion control and to consider the hidden node problem, we propose a congestion control scheme using entire network congestion level estimation combined with transmission power control, data rate control and time slot based transmission control algorithm. The performance of this scheme is evaluated using a Qualnet network simulator. The simulation result shows that our scheme mitigates network congestion in heavy traffic cases and enhances network capacity in light traffic cases, so that packet error rate is perfectly within 10% and entire network load level is maintained within 60~70%. Thus, it can be concluded that the proposed congestion control scheme has quite good performance.

Most of the energy efficient MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are based on duty cycling in a single channel and show competitive performances in a small number of traffic flows; however, under concurrent multiple flows, they result in significant performance degradation due to contention and collision. We propose a multi-channel pipelining (MCP) method for convergecast WSN in order to address these problems. In MCP, a staggered dynamic phase shift (SDPS) algorithms devised to minimize end-to-end latency by dynamically staggering wake-up schedule of nodes on a multi-hop path. Also, a phase-locking identification (PLI) algorithm is proposed to optimize energy efficiency. Based on these algorithms, multiple flows can be dynamically pipelined in one of multiple channels and successively handled by sink switched to each channel. We present an analytical model to compute the duty cycle and the latency of MCP and validate the model by simulation. Simulation evaluation shows that our proposal is superior to existing protocols: X-MAC and DPS-MAC in terms of duty cycle, end-to-end latency, delivery ratio, and aggregate throughput.
This paper numerically investigates the feasibility of an active mass damper (AMD) system using the time delay control (TDC) algorithm, which is one of the robust and adaptive control algorithms, for effectively suppressing the excessive vibration of a building structure under wind loading. Because of its several attractive features such as the simplicity and the excellent robustness to unknown system dynamics and disturbance, the TDC algorithm has the potential to be an effective control system for mitigating the vibration of civil engineering structures such as buildings and bridges. However, it has not been used for structural response reduction yet. In this study, therefore, the active control method combining an AMD system with the TDC algorithm is first proposed in order to reduce the wind-induced vibration of a building structure and its effectiveness is numerically examined. To this end, its stability analysis is first performed; and then, a series of numerical simulations are conducted. It is demonstrated that the proposed active structural control system can effectively reduce the acceleration response of the building structure.

Nowadays the adaptive buffering techniques for burst stream packet configuration and its operation algorithm to save energy in IP core network have been studied. This paper explains the selection method of packet buffering interval for energy saving when configuring burst stream packet at the ingress router in IP core network. Especially the adaptive buffering interval and its implementation scheme are required to improve the energy saving efficiency at the input part of the ingress router. In this paper, we propose the best adaptive buffering scheme that a current buffering interval is adaptively buffering scheme based on the input traffic of the past buffering interval, and analyze its characteristics of energy saving and end-to-end delay by computer simulation. We show the improvement of energy saving effect and reduction of mean delay variation when using an appropriate inverse-function selecting the buffering interval for the configuration of burst stream packet in this paper. We confirm this method have superior properties compared to other method. The proposed method shows that it is less sensitive to the various input traffic type of ingress router and a practical method.

This paper describes composite cavity-backed crossed scythe-shaped dipoles with wide-beam circularly polarized (CP) radiation for use in Global Navigation Satellite Systems. Each branch of the dipole arm contains a meander line, with the end shaped like a scythe to achieve a significant reduction in the size of the radiator. For dual-band operation, each dipole arm is divided into two branches of different lengths. The dipoles are crossed through a $90^{\circ}$ phase delay line of a vacant-quarter printed ring to achieve CP radiation. The crossed dipoles are incorporated with a cavity-backed reflector to make the CP radiation unidirectional and to improve the CP radiation beamwidth. The proposed antennas have broad impedance matching and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidths, as well as right-hand CP radiation with a wide-beamwidth and high front-to-back ratio.
