  • The present study has extended OpenSees, which is an open-source software framework DOS program for developing applications to idealize geotechnical and structural problems, for the static analysis of axial load capacity and settlement of single piles in MS Windows environment. The Windows version of OpenSees as improved by this study has enhanced the DOS version from a general purpose software program to a special purpose program for driven and bored pile analysis with additional features of pre-processing and post-processing and a user friendly graphical interface. The method used in the load capacity analysis is the numerical methods based on load transfer functions combined with finite elements. The use of empirical nonlinear T-z and Q-z load transfer curves to model soil-pile interaction in skin friction and end bearing, respectively, has been shown to capture the nonlinear soil-pile response under settlement due to load. Validation studies have shown the static load capacity and settlement predictions implemented in this study are in fair agreement with reference data from the static loading tests.

  • In case of drilled shafts installed by drilling through soft overburden onto a strong rock, the piles can be regarded as end-bearing elements and their working load is determined by the safe working stress on the pile shaft at the point of minimum cross-section or by code of practice requirements. Drilled shafts drilled down for some depth into weak or weathered rocks and terminated within these rocks act partly as friction and partly as end-bearing piles. The base resistance component can contribute significantly to the ultimate capacity of the pile. However, the shaft resistance is typically mobilized at considerably smaller pile movements than that of the base. In addition, the base response can be adversely affected by any debris that is left in the bottom of the socket. The reliability of base response therefore depends on the use of a construction and inspection technique which leaves the socket free of debris. This may be difficult and costly to achieve, particularly in deep sockets, which are often drilled under water or drilling slurry. As a consequence of these factors, shaft resistance generally dominates pile performance at working loads. The efforts to improve the prediction of drilled shaft pile performance are therefore primarily concerned with the complex mechanisms of shaft resistance development. In this study, the numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the behavior characteristics of side of rock socketed drilled shafts varying the loading condition at the pile head. The difference of behavior characteristics of side resistance is also evaluated with the effects of modelling of asperity.

  • Bearing capacity of pile is governed by only skin friction in frozen ground condition, while it is generally governed both by skin friction and end bearing capacity in typically unfrozen ground condition. Skin friction force, which arises from the interaction between pile and frozen soils, is defined as adfreeze bond strength, and adfreeze bond strength is one of the most important key parameters for design of pile in frozen soils. Many studies have been carried out in order to analyze adfreeze bond strength characteristics over the last fifty years. However, many studies for adfreeze bond strength have been conducted with limited circumstances, since adfreeze bond strength is sensitively affected by various influence factors such as intrinsic material properties, pile surface roughness, and externally imposed testing conditions. In this study, direct shear test is carried out inside of large-scaled freezing chamber in order to analyze the adfreeze bond strength characteristics with varying freezing temperature and normal stress. Also, the relationship between adfreeze bond strength and shear strength of the frozen soil obtained from previous study was analyzed. The coefficient of adfreeze bond strength was evaluated in order to predict adfreeze bond strength based on shear strength, and coefficients suggested from this and previous studies were compared.

  • Bi-directional pile load test (briefly called 'BDH PLT') cannot be performed at loading levels where ultimate bearing capacity could be assessed in field, it is not possible to precisely determine both ultimate load and yield load and under loading. Since the load is transmitted separately to the skin and the end unlike the static pile load test (briefly called 'SPLT') and the direction of loading on the skin is opposite, such methods could have a result different from actual movements of shafts. In this study, three-dimensional finite element method (briefly called '3D FEM') analysis was conducted from results of the BDH PLT, made with barret piles, which were large-diameter cast-in-place concrete piles, and the calculated design constants were applied to the 3D FEM analysis of the SPLT to interpret them numerically and then, actual behaviors of cast-in-place concrete piles were estimated. First, using the results of the BDH PLT with cast-in-place concrete piles, behaviors of the piles made by loading upwards and downwards were analyzed to calculate load-displacement. Second, the design constants, calculated by the 3D FEM analysis and the back analysis, were applied on the 3D FEM analysis for the SPLT, and from these results, behaviors of the SPLT through the BDH PLT was analyzed. Last, the results of the 3D FEM analysis of the SPLT through the BDH PLT was expressed in relationships as {A ratio of bearing capacity of the SPLT and of the BDH PLT (y)} ~ {A ratio of reference displacement and pile circumference (x)}, and they were all classified by reference displacement at 10.0 mm, 15.0 mm, and 25.4 mm.

  • In this study, the research on MC anchor has been developed as composite type has done. MC anchor exerts bearing pressure on pre-bored hole where the end fixing device is expanded. Therefore, the uplift capacity is to be increased and it has the characteristics that the anchor body is not eliminated from the ground even if the grouting is not carried out properly. Furthermore, it reduces the loss of tension and raises the construction availability by inserting the reinforced bar as well as the anchor cable, while it can improve the long-term stability because the nail is expected to play the role when the loss of the anchor cable is occurred in a long-term. However, because the resistance mechanism of the compound anchor such as MC anchor is different from friction anchor, the estimation method of the uplift capacity by the frictional force of the ground and the grout is not proper. Particularly, in domestic cases, the problem to overestimate or underestimate the uplift capacity is expected because the design method considering the soil characteristics about the compound anchor has not been developed. Therefore, in this study, in order to evaluate the characteristics of MC anchor and a kind of compound anchor, we measured the uplift, the tension and the creep by nine anchors tests in shale ground that the fluctuation of the strength is great. In addition, we analyzed the test result comparing to the result of the general friction anchor and evaluated the characteristics of MC anchor movement to gather the results. As a result of the test, we found the effect that the uplift capacity is increased in shale ground comparing to the general friction anchor.

  • Shearing strength test in tension type was investigated to determine the shear resistance of bolt and drift-pin connection of domestic larix glulam. The specimen was connected with bolt and drift-pin in the inserted plate type, and only bolt in the side plate type. The diameter of bolt and drift-pin used in the experiment are 12, 16 and 20 mm. The hole of bolt was drilled at the end-distance 5 d and 7 d. Tension load was loaded in the direction parallel to grain. The shear resistance was evaluated according to end-distance through this, the yield load was compared with the experimental yield load, using Larsen's formula. The prototype design strength is based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d and the reduction factor of end-distance 5 d was calculated. The results were as follows. 1. The average of maximum load of drift-pin connection was higher by 3~30% at the inserted type than at bolt connection with increasing diameter. In bolt connection, the average of maximum load of the side type was 1.54~2.07 times higher than that of the inserted type. In the same diameter, the average of maximum load of end-distance 7 d was higher by 8~44% than that of 5 d. 2. The bearing stress was 1.16~1.41 times higher at the inserted connection than at drift-pin connection, and 1.37~1.86 times higher at 7 d than at 5 d. Also, when the slenderness ratio was below 7.5 at drift-pin connection and below 6.0 at inserted connection, the lateral capacity was good. 3. The ratio of the experimental yield load and the predicted yield load calculated by Larsen's formula proposed by Larsen was 0.80~1.10 at inserted connection, and 0.75~1.46 at side connection. 4. When the inserted bolt connection was based on the yield load of end-distance 7 d, the reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm connection, 0.93 at 16 mm and 0.85 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.89 at 12 mm the inserted drift-pin connection, 0.93 at 16 mm, 0.93 at 20 mm. The reduction factor was 0.79 at the side connection of the 12 mm bolt connection and 0.80 at 16 mm.

  • As the skin friction of an embedded pile is produced by the cement paste injected into the borehole, the skin friction cannot be evaluated by the end of initial driving test, which is conducted before the cement paste is cured. In addition, the total resistance of an embedded pile may not be properly evaluated during the restrike test if the base resistance is not fully mobilized because of the insufficient driven energy. The objective of this study is to suggest a new load-settlement curve of embedded piles by combining the results of the end of initial driving and restrike tests. Test piles are installed at fields by using the embedded pile method, and the results of the dynamic pile tests are analyzed using CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) after the end of initial driving and restrike tests are conducted. A new load transfer curve, which combines the behaviors of the pile base at the end of initial driving and of the pile shaft at the restrike, is suggested, and a new load-settlement curve is obtained. Subsequently, the resistances of the test piles are evaluated using the combined load-settlement curve, and compared with the results from the end of initial driving and restrike tests. The results showed that the resistances, which are evaluated using the combined load-settlement curve, may overcome the underestimation of the resistance because of the insufficient driven energy. In addition, the resistance resulted from the combined load-settlement curve may be more similar to that from the static load test because the suggested load transfer curve is closer to the behavior of the embedded pile compared to the results of end of initial driving and restrike tests. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the combined load-settlement curve may be effectively used for the evaluation of the bearing capacity of embedded piles.

  • If a sky-bridge is rigidly connected to adjacent buildings, the irregularity of the connected structures is increased resulting in providing a worse seismic behavior. Therefore, a friction pendulum system (FPS) or lead rubber bearing (LRB) is frequently used for the connection system between a sky-bridge and building structures. These connection systems should be carefully designed to prevent a skyfall of a sky-bridge subjected to severe seismic loads. In this paper, the inevitable structural design procedures for a sky-bridge connection system using a friction pendulum system without uplift resistance capacity have been investigated. To this end, Nuri Dream Square building structure is used as a example structure. The structural design process of a friction pendulum system for fail safe of a sky-bridge has been proposed in this paper by evaluating structural responses of the sky-bridge and building structures subjected to earthquake loads.

  • Both static pile load test with load transfer measuring system and the pile dynamic load test are performed to estimate the skin friction and behavior characteristics of a large drilled shaft. And the numerical modeling of large drilled shaft is performed by applying the FDM program. Since the magnitude of friction resistance depends on the relative displacement between soil and shaft, load and displacement at the arbitrary depth along the large drilled shaft are estimated to analyze the correlation. According to the measuring results of load transfer, unit skin friction along the large drilled shaft was fully mobilized at gravel layer in the middle of shaft and the frictional resistance transmitted to bedrock was relatively small. Also, even for the same drilled shaft, the results of PDA and static load test are different with each other and the difference is discussed.

  • Numerical analysis was carried out using a finite element analysis program to analyze the behavior characteristics of enlarged cylinder type anchor. It was found that the ultimate resistance of enlarged cylinder type anchor increases with the enlargement angle from numerical analysis for various enlargement angle cases. In the case of $30-60^{\circ}$ of enlargement angle, the deformation and stress distribution characteristics in anchor are similar regardless of enlargement angle. However, when the same tensile force is applied, there is a difference in the degree of frictional resistance because of difference of displacement of top of grouting zone. Also, it was found that the maximum compressive force and tensile force were generated at the cone of the upper portion of the grouting zone, and tensile fracture of the upper grouting portion is likely to occur.
