The first frame of a GOP is encoded in intra mode which generates a larger number of bits. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus the intial QP for the first frame affects the first frame as well as the following frames. Traditionally, the initial QP is determined among four constant values only depending on the bpp. Although this initialization scheme is simple, yet it is not accurate enough. An accurate intial QP prediction scheme should not only depends on bpp but also on the complexity of the video sequence and the output bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a traffic model for finding the optimal initial QP which maximizes the PSNR of the GOP. We also propose a method to find model parameters for real-time video encoding. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed traffic model captures initial QP characteristics effectively and the proposed method for model parameters accurately estimates the real values.

The performance of turbo-like codes highly depends on their frame size and thus, the bit error rate performance of turbo-like codes can be improved by increasing the frame size. Unfortunately, increasing the frame size of channel codes induces some drawbacks such as the increase of not only encoding and decoding complexity but also transmission and decoding latencies. On the other hand, a faster than Nyquist (FTN) transmission causes intentional inter-symbol interference (ISI) and thus, induces some correlation among the transmission symbols. In this paper, we propose an FTN transmission with multiple channel codes. By exploiting the correlation among the modulated symbols, multiple code frames can be regarded as a code frame with a lager frame size. Due to the inherent parallel encoding scheme of proposed scheme, parallel decoding can be easily implemented.

In this paper, $256{\times}256$ input image is classified into a validity block and an edge block of $8{\times}8$ block for image compression. DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) is executed only for the DC coefficient that is validity coefficients for a validity block. Predict the position where a quantization coefficient becomes 0 for an edge block, I propose new algorithm to execute DCT in the reduced region. Not only this algorithm that I proposed reduces computational complexity of FDCT(Forward DCT) and IDCT(Inverse DCT) and decreases encoding time and decoding time. I let compressibility increase by accomplishing other stability verticality zigzag scan by the block size that was classified for each block at the time of huffman encoding each. In addition, the algorithm that I suggested reduces Run-Length by accomplishing the level verticality zigzag scan that is good for a classified block characteristic and, I offer the compressibility that improved thereby.

The High Efficiency Video Coding (MPEG-H HEVC/ITU-T H.265) is the newest video coding standard which has the quadtree-structured coding unit (CU). The quadtree-structure splits a CU adaptively, and its optimum CU depth can be determined by rate-distortion optimization. Such HEVC encoding requires very high computational complexity for CU depth decision. Motivated that the blob detection, which is a well-known algorithm in computer vision, detects keypoints in pictures and decision of CU depth needs to consider high frequency energy distribution, in this paper, we propose to utilize these keypoints for fast CU depth decision. Experimental results show that 20% encoding time can be saved with only slightly increasing BDBR by 0.45% on all intra case.

In this paper, we have analyzed the current MPEG-4 video encoding tools and proposed efcient coding techniques that reduce the complexity of the encoder. Until recently, encoder optimization without shape coding has been a major concern in video for wire/wireless low bit rate coding services. Recently, we found out that the computational complexity of MPEG-4 shape coding plays a very important role in the object-based coding through experiments. We have made an experiment whether we could get optimized object-based coding method through successfully combining latest optimized texture coding techniques with our proposed optimized shape coding techniques. In texture coding, we applied the MVFAST method for motion estimation. We chose not to use IVOPF(Intelligent VOP Formation) but to use TRB(Tightest Rectangular Boundary) for positioning VOP and, finally, to eliminate the spiral search of shape motion estimation to reduce the complexity in shape coding. As a result of experiment, our proposed scheme achieved improved time complexity over the existing reference software by $57.3\%$ and over the optimized method on which only shape coding was applied by $48.7\%$, respectively.

For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264/AVC video coding standard employs new coding tools compared with existing coding standards. However, due to these new coding tools, the complexity of K264/AVC standard encoder is greatly increased. Specifically, the inter/intra mode decision method using RDO(rate-distortion optimization) technique is one of the most complex parts in H.264/AVC. In this paper, we focus on the complexity reduction in macroblock mode decision. In the proposed method, we reduce the complexity of the $4{\times}4$ mode decision process using $4{\times}4$ simple square filters, and using spatial block correlation method. Additionally, exploiting the best mode of sub_macroblock in $Inter8{\times}8$ mode, we proposed an algorithm to eliminate some intra modes in current macroblock mode decision process. In addition, we employed a method to raise the probability to select SKIP, $Intra16{\times}16$, and $Intra16{\times}16$ modes which usually show low complexity and low bitrate compared with other modes. From the simulation results, the proposed algorithm reduce the encoding time by maximum 83% of total, and reduce the bitrate of the overall sequences by $8{\sim}10%$ on the average compared with existing coding methods.

In conventional video coding, the complexity of encoder is much higher than that of decoder. However, as more needs arises for extremely simple encoder in environments having constrained energy such as sensor network, much investigation has been carried out for eliminating motion prediction/compensation claiming most complexity and energy in encoder. The Wyner-Ziv coding, one of the representative schemes for the problem, reconstructs video at decoder by correcting noise on side information using channel coding technique such as turbo code. Since the encoder generates only parity bits without performing any type of processes extracting correlation information between frames, it has an extremely simple structure. However, turbo decoding errors occur in noisy side information. When there are high-motion or occlusion between frames, more turbo decoding errors appear in reconstructed frame and look like Salt & Pepper noise. This severely deteriorates subjective video quality even though such noise rarely occurs. In this paper, we propose a computationally extremely light encoder based on symbol-level Wyner-Ziv coding technique and a new corresponding decoder which, based on a decision whether a pixel has error or not, applies median filter selectively in order to minimize loss of texture detail from filtering. The proposed method claims extremely low encoder complexity and shows improvements both in subjective quality and PSNR. Our experiments have verified average PSNR gain of up to 0.8dB.
As Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is a video compression standard extended from H.264/AVC, it is a way to provide scalability in terms of temporal, spatial and quality. Although the compression efficiency of SVC is increased due to the scalability in many aspect, it is essential to reduce the complexity in order to efficiently use because the complexity is relatively increased. To reduce the complexity of SVC in the paper, we propose fast mode decision algorithm to reduce the complexity of encoding process using direction information of B-picture by efficiently performing inter-layer prediction. The proposed algorithm is a fast mode decision algorithm that makes different from detection mode number of forward and backward, bi-direction in the way using best mode of base-layer up-sampled after simply SKIP mode detection using the direction information of best mode of base-layer up-sampled. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm approach can achieve the maximum computational time saving about 53% with almost no loss of rate distortion (RD) performance in the enhancement layer.

A chip, which can fast encoder the audio data to AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) LC(Low Complexity) that is MPEG-2 audio standard, has been designed on the basis of a 32 bits DSP core and fabricated with 0.25um CMOS technology. At first, the various optimization methods for implementing the algerian are devised to reduce the memory size and calculation cycles. FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) hardware block is added to the DSP core to get the more reduction of the calculation cycles. The chips has the size of $7.20\times7.20 mm^2$ and about 830,000 equivalent gates, can carry out AAC encoding under 70MIPS(Million Instructions per Second).

This paper proposes a fractal compression method using the domain classification and local searching, which utilize DCT coefficient characteristic Generally, the fractal Image encoding method has a time consuming process to search a domain to be matched with range block In order to reduce computation complexity, the domain and range regions are respectively classified into 4 category by using the characteristics of DCT coefficients and each range region is encoded by a method suitable for the property of its category Since the bit amount of the compressed image depends on the number of range blocks, the matching of domain block and range block is induced on the large range block by using local search, so that compression ratio is increased by reducing the number of range block In the local search, the searching complexity is reduced by determining the direction and distance of searching using the characteristics of DCT coefficients The experimental results shows that the proposed algorithm have 1 dB higher PSNR and 0 806 higher compression ratio than previous algorithm.
