  • This paper presents the experimental results on flooding of countercurrent flow in vertical multirod channels, which consists of falling water film and upward air flow. In particular, the effects of spacer grids, with and without mixing vane, and of blockage in the multirod bundle on the behaviour of flooding were investigated. The 5$\times$5 zircaloy tube bundle was used for the test section. The comparison of previous analytical models and empirical correlations with present data on flooding showed that the existing models and correlations predict much higher flooding curves. The spacer grid causes the lower flooding air flow rate to compare with the bare rod bundle. However, the mixing spacer grids need a higher flooding air flow rate for a constant liquid flow rate than the spacer grids without mixing vanes. The bundle containing blockages has the highest flooding air flow rate among the bundles with spacer grids and blockages. Empirical flooding correlations for the three types of test section have been made.

  • Air-conditioners use a spirally coiled capillary tube as an expansion device to enhance compactness of the unit. However, most empirical correlations in open literature were developed for straight capillary tubes without considering coiled effects on the mass flow rate. The objectives of this study are to investigate the flow characteristics of coiled capillary tubes and to develop a generalized correlation for mass flow rate through coiled capillary tubes. The mass flow rates through the coiled capillary tubes and straight capillary tubes were measured by varying operating conditions and tube geometry. The condensing temperatures varied at 40.5, 47.5 and $54.5^{\circ}C$, and subcoolings altered at 3.5, 6.5 and $11.5^{\circ}C$. The mass flow rates of the coiled capillary tubes decreased by 5 to 16% compared with those of the straight capillary tubes at the same operating conditions. An empirical correlation was developed by introducing equivalent length of capillary tube with non-dimensional parameters for coiled shape. The present correlation predicts the data with average and standard deviations of 0.33% and 3.24%, respectively.

  • Full-scale utilizations of batch separation process often require knowledge about thermodynamics and correlation techniques of physical properties of complex mixture consisting of a great number of many unknown components. Various empirical correlations have been proposed to predict the physical properties mostly about the pseudocomponent of petroleum. In this study, one parameter correlations are developed for the calculations of the critical physical properties and ideal heat capacity of the pseudo-component of coal tar fractions. Developed model can provide a tool for the design and operations for the batch distillation of coal tar mixture.

  • DNA microarray is currently the most prominent tool for investigating large-scale gene expression data. Different algorithms for measuring gene expression levels from scanned images of microarray experiments may significantly impact the following steps of functional genomic analyses. $Affymetrix^{(R)}$ recently introduced high-density microarrays and new statistical algorithms in Microarray Suit (MAS) version 5.0$^{(R)}$. Very high correlations (0.92 - 0.97) between the new algorithms and the old algorithms (MAS 4.0) across several species and conditions were reported. We found that the column-wise array correlations had a tendency to be much higher than the row-wise gene correlations, which may be much more meaningful in the following higher-order data analyses including clustering and pattern analyses. In this paper, not only the detailed comparison of the two sets of algorithms is illustrated, but the impact of the introducing new algorithms on the further clustering analysis of microarray data and of possible pitfalls in mixing the old and the new algorithms were also described.

  • An experimental study of steam condensation on a subcooled thick water layer (0.018 ~0.032 m) in a countercurrent stratified flow has been performed using a nearly horizontal circular pipe. A total of 103 average interfacial condensation heat transfer coefficients were obtained and parametric effects of steam and water flow rates and the degree of subcooling on condensation heat transfer were examined. The measured local temperature and velocity distributions in the thick water layer revealed that there was a thermal stratification due to the lack of full turbulent thermal mixing in the lower region of the water layer Two empirical Nusselt number correlations, one in terms of average steam and water Reynolds numbers, and the water Prandtl number, and the other in terms of the Jakob number in place of the Prandtl number, which agree with most of the data within $\pm$ 25%, were developed based on the bulk flow properties. Comparisons of the present data with existing correlations showed that the present data were significantly lower than the values predicted by existing correlations.

  • Performance of the water direct contact air conditioning system, in which heat and mass are transferred directly between air and water droplet, is simulated by semi-empirical method. This system improves transport efficiency compared to conventional indirect contact system and cooling, heating, dehumidification and humidification are attained with one unit. In this study, temperature and flowrate for air and water are measured in the various cooling and heating conditions, and correlations for $h_{c}A/c_{pm}$ are derived from these data. Cooling and heating characteristics of the water direct contact air conditioning system are investigated using correlations.

  • An alternating conditional expectation (ACE) algorithm, a kind of non-parametric regression method, is proposed to generate empirical correlations automatically. The ACE algorithm yields an optimal relationship between a dependent variable and multiple independent variables without any preprocessing and initial assumption on the functional forms. This algorithm is applied to a collection of 12,879 CHF data points for forced convective boiling hi vertical tubes to develop a new critical heat flux (CHF) correlation. The meat root mean square, and maximum errors of our new correlation are -0.558%, 12.5%, and 122.6%, respectively. Our CHF correlation represents the entire set of CHF data with an overall accuracy equivalent to or better than that of three existing correlations.

  • This study quantifies the dynamic interrelationship between the KOSPI index return and search query data derived from the Naver DataLab. The empirical estimation using a bivariate GARCH model reveals that negative contemporaneous correlations between the stock return and the search frequency prevail during the sample period. Meanwhile, the search frequency has a negative association with the one-week- ahead stock return but not vice versa. In addition to identifying dynamic correlations, the paper also aims to serve as a test bed in which the existence of profitable trading strategies based on big data is explored. Specifically, the strategy interpreting the heightened investor attention as a negative signal for future returns appears to have been superior to the benchmark strategy in terms of the expected utility over wealth. This paper also demonstrates that the big data-based option trading strategy might be able to beat the market under certain conditions. These results highlight the possibility of big data as a potential source-which has been left largely untapped-for establishing profitable trading strategies as well as developing insights on stock market dynamics.

  • The mean streamline analysis using the empirical loss correlations has been developed for performance prediction of industrial mixed-flow fan impellers in the present study. New simple, but effective, models for the additional Euler input work characteristic and an internal recirculation loss due to internal flow reversal under the low flowrate conditions are proposed in this paper. Comparison of overall performance predictions with six sets of test data of mixed-flow fans is accomplished to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed models. Predicted performance curves by the present set of loss models agree fairly well with experimental data for a variety of mixed-flow fan impellers over the entire operating conditions. The prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently in the conceptual design phase of mixed-flow fan impellers.

  • Nucleate pool boiling of water in vertical annuli at atmospheric pressure has been studied experimentally and two empirical correlations have been suggested to obtain effects of geometric parameters on heat transfer. Data of the present and the previous tests range over a tube length of 0.50-0.57 m, a diameter of 16.5-34.0 mm, and an annular gap size of 3.7-44.3 mm. Through the analysis, tube bottom confinement (open or closed) has been investigated, as well. The developed correlations predict experimental data within a ${\pm}25%$ error bound. It has been identified that effects of the diameter and the length of heated tubes as well as the annular gap size should be counted into the analyses to estimate heat transfer coefficients accurately.
