  • Isometric muscle strength has become important as it is realized that a large variation in the human exists and is affected by many personal and environmental factors. Experiments have been performed for estimating the individual capabilities of the quadriceps femoris muscle in man. The surface EMG has been recorded on the belly of the rectus femoris muscle during voluntary isometric continuous exertion at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% MVC. As a muscle force (% MVC) increases, the rectified mean EMG amplitude increases in a non-linear form. The rectified mean EMG amplitude also increases in a non-linear with respect to fatigue progression. As the muscle force (% MVC) increases, an endurance time of isometric exertion decreases linearly. Analysis shows that rectified mean EMG amplitude is a consistent and sensitive measure of motor unit recruitments and can be useful in estimating an individual capability of a local muscle. Further, the result satisfies the sufficient condition that type S motor units are recruited first, while large motor units are recruited progressively as the fatigue develops.

  • EMG is used in rehabilitation research to provide a method to infer muscle function. This paper will present an introduction to interpretation of electromyography (EMG) data for physical therapists. It is important for the physical therapist to have an understanding of the collection and reduction of raw electrical data from the muscle to allow the physical therapist to interpret findings in a research report, and improve planning of clinical research projects with respect to data collection. We will discuss factors that affect the type of EMG collected and the ways in which various common methods of data reduction will impact the findings from a study that uses EMG.

  • Objectives : This study is to evaluate the effect of flexion-distraction technique by measuring surface EMG in low back pain groups. Methods : 5 low back pain patients' constact time, power, fatigue, recovery of muscle were measured before and after flexion-distraction technique. Results : The asymmetry ratio of surface EMG in low back pain groups were Increased, but decreased after flexion-distraction technique. Conclusions : Surface EMG might be used for evaluating the effect of flexion-distraction technique.

  • In this Paper, we developed an electrolarynx controlled by the EMG(electromyography) of the sternohyoid muscle, and rested the property of the new electrolarynx while normal persons with his own larynx use it. for the examination of property of the developed electrolarynx, our researchers performed three different experiments. The first experiment was tested whether that on/off control of the vibrator of the electrolarynx is synchronized with the activity of the sternohyoid EMG. In the second experiment, it was tested when the lower amplitude of the sternohyoid EMG is produced, whether the higher pitch of the electrolarynx is produced, and vice versa. The third experiment was tested the probability that the electrolarynx can produce the voiceless sound. As the results, we found that the developed electrolarynx had the good produce of the on/off vibrator control and the pitch control of the electrolarynx. Also, we ascertained the possibility that it can produce the voiceless sound.

  • Workers who work with his neck bent backward in the standing posture have often complained of their musculoskeletal stress. The objective of this study was to find how much stress there was for workers who worked with their neck bent backward. The subjective evaluation and electromyography(EMG) were used to check the level of the stress. It was found that all subjects felt extreme pain after working with the neck bent backward and alternating 1 minute work and 0.5 minute rest for 30 minutes. The EMG level(amplitude) of neck muscles increased 80 percent on the average and the center frequency of EMG shifted to the lower frequency level which indicated fatigue of neck muscles. Thus, the intervention of this musculoskeletal stress is strongly recommended.

  • In this paper, a new decomposition method of the interference EMG signal using MAMDF filtering and digital signal processor. The efficient software and hardware signal processing techniques are employed. The MAMDF filter is employed in order to estimate the presence and likely location of the respective templates which may include in the observed mixture, and high-resolution waveform alignment is employed in order to provide the optimal combination set and time delays of the selected templates. The TMS320C25 digital signal processor chip is employed in order to execute the intensive calculation part of the software. The method is verified through a simulation with real templates which are obtain ed from needle EMG. As a result, the proposed method provides an overall speed improvement of 32-40 times.

  • In this paper, we studied about the EMG of sternohyoid muscle(SH) during articulation. we selected /ki/ as the word that use subaxial a little, and /pa/, /pan/ as the word that use subaxial very much. The subjects were 4 persons with normal larynx. We indicated them to unify the amplitude of SH EMG during /ki/, /pa/, /pan/ phonation, and measured the amplitude of SH EMG between a phoneme and a phoneme.3 At the results, we found that the subjects can not control to unify the amplitude of EMG during articulation.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to find the effect of ankle joint angle on knee extensor electromyographic activity following knee extension exercise. Methods : Ten male university students participated in the study. The subjects performed isometric maximal voluntary knee extensor contractions (MVC) and knee extensor EMG activity measured in with three different ankle joint angle. The EMG activity of rectus femoris(RF), vastus medialis(VM), vastus lateralis(VL) were measured using surface electromyography. Results : EMG activity of vastus lateralis following the change of ankle joint angle was shown statistically significant difference. Conclusion : Ankle plantar flexion position increase EMG activity of vastus lateralis during knee extension exercise.

  • The intelligent trajectory control method that controls moving direction and average velocity for a prosthetic arm is proposed by pattern recognition and force estimations using EMG signals. Also, we propose the real time trajectory planning method which generates continuous accelleration paths using 3 stage linear filters to minimize the impact to human body induced by arm motions and to reduce the muscle fatigue. We use combination of MLP and fuzzy filter for pattern recognition to estimate the direction of a muscle and Hogan's method for the force estimation. EMG signals are acquired by using a amputation simulator and 2 dimensional joystick motion. The simulation results of proposed prosthetic arm control system using the EMG signals show that the arm is effectively followed the desired trajectory depended on estimated force and direction of muscle movements.

  • A gait pattern classification method using electromyography(EMG) signal is presented. The gait pattern with four stages such as stance, heel-off, swing and heel-strike is analyzed and classified using feature parameters such as zero-crossing, integral absolute value and variance of the EMG signal. The EMG signal from Tibialis Anterior and Gastrocnemius muscles was obtained using the surface electrodes, and low-pass filtered at 10kHz. The filtered analog signal was sampled at every 0.5msec and converted to digital signal with 12-bit resolution. The obtained data is analyzed and classified in terms of feature parameters. Analysis results are given to show that the gait patterns classified by the proposed method are feasible.
