The purpose of this study was to investigate the disaster preparedness and professional quality of life among nurses in emergency departments. The participants in this study were 56 nurses in emergency departments in two cities. The data were collected by questionnaires survey from January to August 2016. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS ver. 23.0 program. Participants' disaster preparedness was different according to position (t=-2.32, p=.004), type of working (t=-2.32, p=.004), and frequency of traumatic events (F=5.26, p=.009). There were significant differences by gender (t=2.88, p=.006), desire for continuous work in the emergency room (t=2.95, p=.005), and job satisfaction (F=10.81, p < .001) in compassion satisfaction. Burnout was different according to gender (t=-2.05, p=.045), choice of an emergency department (t=-2.37, p=.021), desire for continuous work in the emergency room (t=-2.31, p=.025), and job satisfaction (F=11.99, p < .001). Disaster preparedness and compassion satisfaction had positively significant correlations. Compassion satisfaction of nurses in emergency department was an important variable that should be considered to improve their disaster preparedness.
Objectives By analyzing data of the pediatric patients who had visited the emergency room of the oriental medical hospital, we can understand their characteristics and diseases. The purpose of this study was to introduce the excellence of the Oriental medicine, to develop various treatments, and to revitalize pediatric emergency care at the oriental medical hospital. Methods The study was composed of 334 pediatric patients who had visited the emergency room of the ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ university oriental hospital from January 2011 to December 2013. Results 1. It has showed that between 7 to 12 years old patients (27.8%) were the most common age populations. 2. The number of pediatric patients was increased during February. According to the weekly distribution data, the number of pediatric patients who had visited on Sunday was the highest (28.7%). Also, the number of pediatric patients who had visited the ER between 21 to 24 hours (29.0%) was the highest. 3. The two major reasons for inpatient hospitalization were digestive and nerve-related symptoms. Nerve-related symptoms were the most common in infants while digestive symptoms were the most common in other child development stages. 4. The duration of time interval from the onset of symptoms to the ER visit was most commonly within 6 hours (50.3%). An acupuncture and herbal medication treatment (70.1%) were the most common medical treatments. The majority of the pediatric patients (95.5%) were discharged after their medical treatments. Conclusions A serious acute illness was not the most common reason for the ER visit among the pediatric patients. The most common disease states that have preferred to be treated with the oriental medicine were dyspepsia, crying, facial palsy, and ankle sprain. We have to introduce the excellence of the oriental medicine. We also need to try developing other treatments such as magnetic acupuncture, aromatherapy, and revitalizing pediatric emergency care at the oriental medical hospital.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of paramedic students' five-factor personality characteristics and stress coping behavior on the stress of emergency room practice. Methods: This study conducted a survey targeting 2 grade - 4 grade paramedic students who had experience practice at emergency room at N University and B University located in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province. Results: 'Agreeableness' was the highest at 33.88±6.31 and 'Neuroticism' was the lowest at 27.82±7.43. Among stress coping methods, 'active coping' was higher at 3.39 than 'passive coping' at 3.21, and the subarea with the highest score was 'wishful coping'. When looking at clinical practice stress by sub-domain, 'practical training environment' was the highest at 2.96, and 'interpersonal conflict' was the lowest at 2.14. There was a negative correlation between clinical practice stress and friendliness (r=-.220, p=.014) and a positive correlation with active coping (r=.210, p=.019). The influential factors were friendliness (β=-.267) and active coping (β=.258). Conclusion: The paramedic students who participated in this study showed a high level of agreeableness among the five personality traits and used a active coping style to cope with stress. Agreeableness has been shown to lower clinical practice stress, and active coping is classified as the most appropriate coping style, so research is needed to guide people to utilize friendliness and active coping well.

Purpose: The purposes of this study are finding the elements for a fast determination of the need for a transfusion to a multiple trauma patient arriving at this clinic in the initial stage establishing objective bases for a doctor in an emergency department to determine the need for a transfusion immediately after a patient has arrived at the emergency department, and providing treatment by considering various factors based on the nine criteria suggested in the emergency room transfusion score (ETS). Methods: This study was conducted on 375 multiple-trauma patients who visited the Chosun University Hospital Emergency Medical Center and activated the Emergency Trauma Team from January 2010 to December 2013. The patients were divided into the transfused group and the non-transfused group by retrospectively analyzing their medical records. Subsequently, the medical records were examined using the nine items suggested by the ETS and the results were analyzed. Results: Three hundred seventy-five patients with multiple traumas visited the Chosun University Hospital Emergency Medical Center and activated the Emergency Trauma Team. Among them, 258 died and 117 recovered and left the hospital. The deceased patients consisted of 182 males and 76 females with an average age 45. Of the 375, 165 were transferred from other hospitals, and 245 were blunt trauma patients. One hundred sixty-nine patients were injured in traffic accidents, and 119 of those 169 who had systolic blood pressure less than 90 mm Hg died. Two hundred twenty-six (60.3%) out of the 375 patients with multiple traumas received an emergency blood transfusion and their average age was 48. The 375 patients consisted of 156 males, 151 who had been transferred from other hospitals, 218 who presented with blunt trauma, 134 who had been injured in traffic accidents, 156 who had a systolic blood pressure less than 90 mm Hg, 134 who scored higher than 9 points on the GCS, and 162 who had a stable pelvic fracture of these 143 died. Conclusion: During this study, 226 (60.3%) out of the patients with multiple traumas received an emergency blood transfusion. After analyzing the results related to emergency blood transfusion by using ETS, we found that an emergency blood transfusion had to be prepared quickly when patients were transferred from other hospitals when the systolic blood pressure was less than 90 mmHg. when abnormalities had been detected by ultrasonography and when the patient presented with a stable pelvic fracture.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate that the prevalence of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and occupational environmental factors that contribute to the developing of PTSD in workers who worked in emergency room in Korea. Methods: This study is a multicenter cross-sectional study that was conducted in three emergency rooms. Data was collected by self-response method through questionnaire. The Impact Event Scale-Revised was used to screen the high-risk group of PTSD. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with the developing of high-risk group of PTSD. Results: Total 211 subjects responded to the questionnaire. Of these, 170 subjects experienced psychological trauma event (PTE) in the working environment. And 60 subjects classified as high risk group of PTSD, so a prevalence of high risk group for PTSD was 28.4%. Factors related to the high risk group of PTSD were the frequency of psychological trauma events experienced over the past 1 year and the high score of QIDS-SR16. Conclusion: The prevalence of high risk group for PTSD among emergency room workers in Korea is very high. This may adversely affect the safety of patients, so early screening and intervention are necessary.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors determining the quality of life in nurses in emergency rooms. Methods: Subjects were 131 nurses working in emergency rooms in B metropolitan city, Y and J city. Data were collected from June 5 to July 10, 2015 using structured self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: Existential well-being (${\beta}$=.59) of nurses in emergency rooms and gender (${\beta}$=.19) were found to be significant predictors of quality of life in nurses in emergency rooms. Conclusion: The results suggest that it is needed to improve existential well-being of nurses in emergency rooms. Ultimately, holistic spiritual program for nurses should be developed the quality of life in nurses in emergency rooms.
Purpose: This was a descriptive correlation study to identify emergency room (ER) nurses' coping types and factors affecting compassion satisfaction (CS) and compassion fatigue. Methods: During March and April 2013, 170 questionnaires were distributed to ER nurses working in general hospitals in D and C regions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise regression analysis. Results: Compassion fatigue was most strongly affected by emotional expression for burnout and by practical support pursuit for secondary traumatic stress. Positive coping, emotional expression, position, positive reinterpretation, and self-blame explained 42% of CS. Conclusion: Results indicate that nurses with moderate levels of career had high compassion fatigue and low compassion satisfaction. Thus these nurses need to be given an opportunity to achieve self-development and improve their ability as nurses; interventions that can reinforce positive coping strategies should be provided as personal coping strategies affect compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction.

Objectives: Early retirement occurs when one's job satisfaction suffers due to employment mismatch resulting from factors such as inadequate compensation. Medical doctors report high levels of job stress and burnout relative to other professionals. These levels are highest among emergency physicians (EPs), and despite general improvements in their working conditions, early retirement continues to become more common in this population. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing EPs intention to retire early and to develop a probability equation for its prediction. Methods: A secondary analysis of data from the 2015 Korean Society of Emergency Physicians Survey was performed. The variables potentially influencing early retirement were organized into personal characteristics, extrinsic factors, and intrinsic factors. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors and to develop a probability equation; these findings were then arranged in a nomogram. Results: Of the 377 survey respondents included in the analysis, 48.0% intended to retire early. Risk factors for early retirement included level of satisfaction with the specialty and its outlook, slanderous reviews, emergency room safety, health status, workload intensity, age, and hospital type. Intrinsic factors (i.e., slanderous reviews and satisfaction with the specialty and its outlook) had a stronger influence on early retirement than did extrinsic factors. Conclusions: To promote career longevity among EPs, it is vital to improve emergency room safety and workload intensity, to enhance medical professionalism through a stronger vision of emergency medicine, and to strengthen the patient-doctor relationship.

Emergency room process is very important in the whole hospital processes because it is first diagnosis for patient. Above all, triage is important activity which quickly diagnose the status of emergency patient and sets the priority for treatment. This paper analyzes the treatment process pattern by triage type. The results show that the treatment process after triage such as residence time, diagnosis and checkup type, and joint treatment are dependent on triage types. We can use these analysis results for improving the current triage system and developing the new triage system considering a domestic emergency medical service environment.

Geospatial research on emergency response in multi-level micro-spatial environments (e.g., multi-story buildings) that aims at understanding and analyzing human movements at the micro level has increased considerably since 9/11. Past research has shown that reducing the time rescuers needed to reach a disaster site within a building (e.g., a particular room) can have a significant impact on evacuation and rescue outcomes in this kind of disaster situations. With the purpose developing emergency response systems that are capable of using complex real-time geospatial information to generate fast-changing scenarios, this study develops a Spatiotemporal Optimal Route Algorithm (SORA) for guiding rescuers to move quickly from various entrances of a building to the disaster site (room) within the building. It identifies the optimal route and building evacuation bottlenecks within the network in real-time emergency situations. It is integrated with a Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) based tracking system in order to monitor dynamic geospatial entities, including the dynamic capacities and flow rates of hallways per time period. Because of the limited scope of this study, the simulated data were used to implement the SORA and evaluate its effectiveness for performing 3D topological analysis. The study shows that capabilities to take into account detailed dynamic geospatial data about emergency situations, including changes in evacuation status over time, are essential for emergency response systems.
