To develop a system for the mass production of Protaetia brevitarsislarvae (Pbl), this study analyzed the oviposition characteristics of third instar Pbl through successive rearing and cold treatments. In the first generation, females laid 50 eggs each on average, and spawned higher numbers of eggs for the first 5 days but then fewer after this. However, all of the $2^{nd}$-generation females that were produced through the successive rearing of eggs from the $1^{st}$ generation did not spawn. When test insects (TI) were raised at $32^{\circ}C$, their $mean{\pm}SE$ pupal period and emergence rate were $28.4{\pm}1.9$ days and 87%, respectively. However, most individuals raised in cold treatments ($5^{\circ}C$ and $-5^{\circ}C$) without a pre-cooling period did not survive. Individuals exposed to a pre-cooling period, however, had a 7-10 days longer pupal period than those raised at $32^{\circ}C$, and their emergence rate (90%) was slightly higher. Different cold treatment temperatures ($0^{\circ}C$, $3^{\circ}C$, or $5^{\circ}C$) and periods (30 or 60 days) were tested in further experiments. The experimental group kept for 30 days at $0^{\circ}C$ and $3^{\circ}C$ had the shortest pupal period of all, and emergence rates exceeded 90% in most groups. With respect to the number of eggs spawned by the second generation females after cold treatments, the experimental groups held in cold treatments at $5^{\circ}C$ for 30 and 60 days were found to spawn the most eggs. Consequently, the experimental group kept at $5^{\circ}C$ for 30 days was the most effective set of conditions tested during the entire breeding period.
The objective of experiment was to investigate the effects of sowing dates on forage yield and growth characteristics of rye in paddy field cultivation in midwest region of Korea. The field experiment treated with 5 levels of sowing dates was carried out at Yesan from october 1990 to june 1991. The field emergence rate and winter survival rate were decreased with delay in sowing dates by the days from sowing to emergence were took a long period of time. The crop growth rate were increased with early in sowing date. The fresh and dry weight of rye were increased with early in sowing date, but there was no significant differences between sowing date from Oct. 5 to Oct. 25. The highest fresh yield was obtained at flowering stage and the highest dry yield was obtained at milky stage. The ratio of leaf blade and leaf sheath in rye plant were decreased with earlier sowing date and delayed harvest, but the ratio of stem and inflorescence was vice versa.
This study was carried out to obtain the basic information for the shortening of emergence period of ginseng by treatment of growth regulators. Seedlings that removed and non-removed bud sac were treated at 10, 50 and 100ppm of GA$_3$, Kinetin and 2,4-D in early December, and investigated the characteristics of new bud emergence and growth vigor in 2-year-old ginseng. GA treatment showed the most desirable effects in shortening of emergence period of new bud, and elevating its emergence rate with increasing of the GA concentration. In addition, GA treatment especially accelerated the growth of stem and petiole length and early finished the growth of aerial parts of ginseng. On the other hand, root weights were mainly increased by formation of a lot fine roots in GA 50, 100ppm plots.
This study was carried out to develop salt tolerant varities of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) which can be grown in the high salty reclaimed land. The seeds of three varieties 'Naehan', 'Tammi', and 'Halla' were treated by proton ion beams and gamma rays with 0 to 2,000 Gy. For the selection of salt tolerant lines, emergence and survival rate, and growth characteristics of $M_2$ to $M_4$ generations were investigated in the Saemangeum reclaimed fields with the different salt concentrations. The lines with potential salt tolerance were selected in the $M_4$ generation and tested indoor for their growth characteristics. There was no significant changes in the soil pH for $M_4$ generation during growth period. However, soil EC was higher in early spring than sowing period (mid October). In $M_4$ generation test, the seeds of original and selected line showed high rates of emergence and survival, as determined one month after sowing. After wintering, however, the original varieties showed the significant reduction in the survival rate, while the selected lines showed a higher survival rate and good growth, leading to the completion of their life cycle. Consequently we selected 9 lines from $M_4$ generation with better performance in growth and yield. Soil EC was $2.8{\sim}4.3dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ during $M_4$ generation growth period. The laboratory test of the lines selected from $M_4$ generation was made for their salt tolerance potential. The selected lines showed higher chlorophyll and proline contents than the original varieties. There was also no significant difference in the emergence rate of seed between the original and selected varieties. In 200 mM natural sea salt, the $N{\gamma}600-21-1-641$ line derived from 'Naehan' was the highest in growth rate, leaf chlorophyll and proline contents. $T{\gamma}800-20-2-461$ line derived from 'Tammi' didn't show significant difference in growth rate compared to original variety in 200 mM and withered in 250 mM like other lines as time passed. $H{\gamma}200-7-1-740$ line showed similar growth and chlorophyll content compared to its original variety.
In spite of simple and cheap cultivation method, water broadcast-seeded rice demonstrates uneven and unstable seedling establishment per unit land area and requires more herbicide and labor-input for weed control. Three experiments were conducted in a phytotron at 18$^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the adaptability of seed-mat mulching cultivation technologies in water seeded rice for the uniform seedling establishment and the inhibition of weed occurrence without herbicide application. Five different kinds of mat with different mesh sizes and fabric properties were tested. The emergence of rice was the highest in Lawn-mat treatment, being comparable with the control, in which seeds were sown without mat. The Lawn-mat also exhibited the lowest mat tension. Mat tension may influence the emergence of rice. And once it was soaked in water, it didn't maintain its original shape any more. The emergence rate of rice was the lowest in Safer-mat treatment. In Lawn-mat treatment, which was the most effective for rice emergence in the first study, the differences of emergence and seedling establishment of rice depending on the seeding position (upper, beneath, and between mats) treatments were negligible, while they were higher in dry seeds than in pre-germinated seeds treatment. The emergence as affected by the kinds of mat also showed the same trend when tested using barnyard grass. Depending on the kinds of mat, the inhibition effect of weeds was the greatest in Safer-mat and the poorest in Lawn-mat. These results strongly suggest the possibility that the uniform seedling establishment and weed management without chemical could be achieved simultaneously by seed-mat mulching through the combination of effective mat for the emergence of rice and another efficient mat for the inhibition of weed occurrence. This possibility was also tested in the field.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of shading (50% or not) and pruning height (3cm, 6cm, and 9cm) of remained above-ground plant part on shoot emergence aspect, mortality rate, flowering and cut flower characteristics of two years old Gypsophila paniculata plants. Days to shoot emergence (80%) advanced, emerged shoot number increased and mortality rate surveyed on late October decreased in 50% shading treatment. In addition to, mortality rate decreased, as above-ground plant part was highly pruned. Blooming was earlier with highly pruning the remained above-ground pan and under non-shading condition than shading. Growth traits such flower stalk length, primary branches number, stem diameter, and cut flower yield were the best and also non-particulate rate and rosette formation rate were the lowest in pruning height of 9cm under non-shading condition.
We investigated the effect of constant photoperiod (16L : 8D, 12L : 12D, 8L : 16D), on the oviposition, parasitism, and emergence of Trichogramma dendrolimi. Also during 16L : 8D condition circadian, oviposition and emergence of this species on artificial eggs were checked every 2hrs. When twelve eggs of Antheraea pern~i and artificial eggs were provided, the wasps had the highest rate of oviposition in the first day, and decreased dramatically there after. In these different photoperiod, the total oviposition numbers per A. pernyi eggs by the wasp were 161.8 in 16L : 8D, 145.8 in 121 : 12D and 128.5 in 8L : 16D respectively in the first day. On the other hand for the artificial egg in 16L : 8D photoperiod, the total oviposition number per egg was 106.8 in the first day, 26.6 in the 2nd day and 21.3 in the 3rd day. The rate of emergence from A. pernyi eggs was not different depend on wasp's day age, however in the artificial eggs, after the first day's 84.7% decreased considerably. The emergence rate from artificial eggs was the highest comparatively between 04:OO-0600 hours.
Emergence and early growth of Eleocharis kuroguwai, Potamogeton distinctus, and Sagittaria pygmaea were examined at 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, and $30^{\circ}C$ of soil temperatures using soil temperature gradient bath. Eleocharis kuroguwai emerged at $14^{\circ}C$ or higher temperature and % emergence was increased as soil temperature increased up to $26^{\circ}C$ but decreased at $30^{\circ}C$. Percentage of emergence in Potamogeton distinctus was very low at $10^{\circ}C$ but most of them were emerged at $14^{\circ}C$ or above. Emergence rate was faster as soil temperature increased. Percentage of emergence in Sagittaria pygmaea was increased until 10 days after planting as soil temperature increased but final percentage of emergence was 100% at all temperature. Number of days required for 80% emergence was shortened as soil temperature increased and Eleocharis kuroguwai and Potamogenton distinctus required longer duration to emerge compared to Sagittaria pygmaea. Eleocharis kuroguwai and Potamogeton distinctus required higher accumulated soil temperature for emergence compared to Sagittaria pygmaea. Optimum soil temperature for early growth after emergence of Eleocharis kuroguwai, Potamogeton distinctus, and Sagittaria pygmaea were 26, 18-22, and 18-$26^{\circ}C$, respectively.
To observe the effects of seed matriconditioning on the emergence, plumule growth, and seed physiological properties of normal and aged seeds of three corn(Zea mays L.) genotypes (dent, sugary, and shrunken-2), normal and artificially aged seeds were matriconditioned at 50, 75, 100, and 125% moisture contents of vermiculite at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and the germinability was examined at $25^{\circ}C$ and in cold test (7 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$followed by $25^{\circ}C$). Emergence rate, emergence speed, and plumule growth were smaller in the order of dent>sugary>shrunken-2. Matriconditioning did not affect the emergence rate of normal dent and sugary seeds, while it enhanced emergence speed and plumule growth. In contrast, the emergence rate, emergence speed, and plumule growth of normal shrunken-2 and aged seeds of all genotypes were enhanced as the moisture content of vermiculite increased up to 125% both at $25^{\circ}C$ and in cold test. Matriconditioning promoted $\alpha$-amylase activity and DNA and soluble protein contents, while it reduced the leakage of total sugars and electrolytes from the seeds when soaked in water.
This study was conducted to find out the effect of diniconazole treatment by seed soaking on the stretching of tomato and cucumber seedlings. The emergence rate of tomato and cucumber seed was decreased as diniconazole concentration was higher and soaking period was longer. The emergence rate of tomato seedlings was lower as the soaking period was longer in $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ concentration treatments, although there was no significant difference. The other concentration treatment (10, 50, and $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) reduced emergence rate of tomato seedlings outstandingly in higher concentration and longer treated period, but 90% of treated seeds emerged at 10 days after sowing. As the concentration of diniconazol was higher and soaking period was longer, plant height and growth rate of seedlings were retarded. There covery of internodes growth was faster in lower concentration and shorter soaking period. The top and root fresh weight and dry weight of tomato and cucumber seedlings was not influenced by $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ concentration, but these growth characteristics were reduced in higher concentration and longer soaking period. The dwarfed cucumber seedlings treated by diniconazol showed normal growth rate after planting and their male and female flower was set normally. These results suggest that the proper concentration and soaking period of diniconazol may be $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ concentration for 12 hours in tomato seed, and $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ concentration for 24 hours in cucumber seed.
