  • Oblique impinging plane jets were investigated experimentally and numerically at Reynolds number 21000. The inclination angle was varied from 90.deg.(normal to the impinging plate) to 60.deg.. The distance H between the nozzle exit and the stagnation point on the impinging plate was fixed at H/D=8. The working fluid was air. The mean velocity components and turbulent quantities were measured by a hot-wire anemometer. And the static pressure distributions on the impinging plate were measured by a Pitot tube. In numerical computation, the governing partial differential equations of elliptic type were solved with conventional k-.epsilon. turbulence model. The measurements show that, after impingement, the jet half width alone the wall increases in both directions, and that similarity for each turbulent quantity such as Reynolds shear stress or turbulent kinetic energy is revealed in the wall jet region. The computed results show some deviation from experimental data in the impingement region, where streamline curvature is significant. However, the computed results agree qualitatively well with measurements.

  • A numerical method for simulations of inviscid incompressible flow fields around a ship advancing on the free surface is developed. A body fitted coordinate system, generated by numerically solving elliptic type partial differential equations is used to conform the ship and free surface configurations. Three dimensional Euler equations transformed to the non-staggered body fitted coordinate system are discretised by finite difference method. Time and spatial derivatives are discretised by forward and centered differencings, respectively, and artificial dissipations are added to discretised convection terms for improvements of numerical stability. At each time steps, free surface elevations are recomputed to satisfy nonlinear free surface conditions. Poisson equations for pressure field are solved iteratively and the velocity field for next time step is extrapolated. To verify the developed numerical method, flow fields around a Wigley model are simulated(Fn=0.250-0.408) and compared with experimental data to show good agreements.

  • In this paper we present two preconditioners for solving large sparse linear systems arising from elliptic partial differential equations on massively parallel machines, such as the CM-5. Most massively parallel machines do heavily rely on the message-passing for the interprocessor communications. but according to the current manufacturing standards the cost of communications is very high compared to that of floating point arithmetic computations. Due to this we need an algorithm which minimizes the amount of interprocessor communication on the massively parallel machines. We will show that Block SOR(Successive Over Relaxation) method coupled with the multi-coloring technique is one of such preconditioner on the massively parallel machines, by conducting experiments in the CM-5. Also, we implemented the ADI(Alternation Direction Implicit) method in the CM-5, which has been conventionally one of the most powerful parallel preconditioner. Our experiment shows that Block SOR method coupled with the multi-coloring technique could yield a speedup with 50% efficiency with the range of number of processors form 16 to 512 for a matrix with dimension 512x512. On the other hand, the ADI method shows a very poor performance.

  • A three-dimensional wind field model based on the variational technique has been developed for estimating the overall wind patterns over a complex terrain. The three-dimensional elliptic partial differential equations on Cartesian and terrain-following coordinates have been established to obtain the Lagrangian multiplier and the adjusted wind velocity. The simulations were performed to evaluate the variations of the velocity vectors on the hemisphere, half-cylinder, and saddle type obstacles. Also, the wind field model in the terrain-following coordinate has been applied for evaluating the characteristics of wind patterns according to the variations of Gauss precision moduli on the hemispheric topography. The results showed that the horizontal and vertical wind components were strongly governed by the selection of the values of Gauss precision moduli.
