The purpose of this study is to test content validity of a portfolio assessment and to analyse the information which can be obtained from student portfolios. The content validity of the portfolio was tested against the objectives of each lesson and the emphasis of curriculum. The information was identified from the analysis of student portfolios. Students' portfolios from a fourth grade class in Pyeungteak, Kyeungki-do were used for analysis. The portfolios included students' evidence of learning on (I) Strata, Unit 2 'Strata and Fossil,' and (3) Change of Object by Heat, Unit 4 'Heat and Change of Object'. Fourth-grade science textbooks were also analyzed to understand the base level information for portfolio analysis. Two science education specialists and ten elementary teachers majored in science education took part in this analysis. The results of the analysis showed $70{\sim}100%$ of agreement between the objectives of lesson and portfolio forms. Over 90% of agreement is reached between portfolio forms and the emphasis of the curriculum. Student portfolios revealed much information on comprehension, observation, will to study, and process of learning. They also revealed some information on drawing conclusion, communication. self-direction, progress of learning, self-concept, interaction, and process of learning. As a whole, the information in students' portfolios is similar with that dealt in science textbooks. However, students' portfolios have more information on anticipation, will to study, self-direction, and interaction. On the contrary, science textbook deals more with information on observation, planning inquiry, than students' portfolios. The portfolio assessment examined has very sound content validity. The results also show that much more and various information which can not be obtained from pencil and paper test could be obtained from student portfolios. The use of information, obtained from student portfolios will make it possible understand students' learning. their strength and weakness, hence improve student' science learning.
The purpose of this study was to analyze effects of teaching materials for elementary science gifted conception about object recognition. Elementary science gifted have misconceptions that they can see in lightness. They can not explain how a shadow is made. This paper reports in-depth investigation on elementary science gifted's understanding of object recognition focusing on process of light. A program is developed to elementary science gifted in the subject matter. The tutorial emphasizing the process of light consists of pre-test, worksheet, and post-test. The Tutorial has 4 steps; darkness and light, light on things, light reached eyes, structure of the eyes. Each steps has 2~4 experiments. Through the tutorial, we expect their misconceptions can be changed into scientific conceptions. For the research and analysis, a questionnaire is posed to 39 elementary science gifted at M Elementary School in D Metropolitan City. The first method of product analysis makes a comparative study of pre-test, post-test score, and hake gain each test. As a result, total score of all student was raised. And hake gain of pre-test(II) is 0.6, hake gain of post-test is 0.68. It is Medium gain. Also, elementary science gifted could understand how we see through the tutorial emphasizing process of light. And their misconceptions can be changed into scientific conceptions.
School adjustment of elementary school children is one of the most important things,sinceitisthebasisofthefuturelife. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parent-child relationship, peer relationship, teacher-child relationship, and school adjustment of elementary school students. The research topics of the present study were as follows: (1) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the parent-child relationship? (2) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the peer relationship? (3) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the teacher-child relationship in school? (4) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the grade, and sex? 460 students were sampled in Kangwon-do, and 400 were used in the final data analyses, excluding 60 due to the incomplete answering. Parent-child relationship inventory, peer relationship inventory, teacher-child relationship scale, and school adjustment scale were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS(win) 10.1K. The results were as follows: First, elementary school students adjust themselves to the school better when parent-child relationship, peer relationship, and teacher-child relationship are good. Second, teacher-child relationship has the most important effects on the school adjustment, and peer relationship, and parent-child relationship sequentially. Third, 4th graders adjust to the school better than the 6th, and there is no difference between boys and girls in terms of school adjustments. Based on the above results, discussion and implications for the future research and education were as below: First, teachers need to understand children's school adjustments depend upon their human relationships especially upon teacher-student relationships. Second, teachers need to understand students have more difficulties in adjusting to the school when they grow older. Third, teachers have to keep the children positive peer relationship, and parent-child relationship which are important in children's adjusting to the school. Fourth, future researches need nation-wide sampling and more systematized research design in order to generalize the results.
The purpose of this study is to affirm what influences the lessons applied by reorganizing the ratio-graph unit of level 6-A on the basis on Realistic Mathematics Education(RME) give on mathematical scholastic achievements and mathematical preferences.In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the experimental study was exerted by making two classes of 6 grades in J elementary school located in Gumi city, Gyeongbuk province as subjects. In this study, test of degree of the mathematics learning ability of student, multiple-choice test and descriptive test of the learning dispositions of student were exerted and the results were t-test officially. The results and the conclusions of this study were as follows: First, the results acquired by officially t-test the levels of the mathematics learning ability of student of the group taught by lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME and the group taught by lessons according to the 7th curriculum show a meaningful difference(p=.007). This means that the lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME showed meaningful influences on the improvement of degree of the mathematics learning ability of student. Second, the results acquired by officially t-test the learning dispositions of student multiple-choice test of the group taught by lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME and the group taught by lessons according to the 7th curriculum show a meaningful difference. Especially in the factors of 'mathematical will'(p=.017) and 'mathematical value'(p=.029) were meaningful differences. Also in the descriptive test of the learning dispositions of student, the experimental class showed that it had the potential possibility to have more positive attitudes meaningfully in comparison with the compared class. This means that the lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME showed meaningful influences on the learning dispositions of student.
The goal of this study was to examine the relationship among students' personal variables(Korean language abilities, self-efficacy, student-teacher attachment relationships), teacher variable(perceptions of multi-cultural education) affecting on multi-cultural students' school adjustment. Structural equation modeling was performed to test the mediating role of self-efficacy and student-teacher attachment affecting multi-cultural students' school adjustment. 336 elementary students and their matching 264 elementary school teachers were participated for this study. The model fit for this study model was acceptable, =280.024, df=98, CFI=.930, RMSEA = .074. The results revealed that teacher's perceptions on multi-cultural education significantly related with student-teacher relationships. However, Korean language ability did not directly affect the school adjustment for multi-cultural background students. That is, self-efficacy and student-teacher relationships mediated between Korean language ability and school adjustment. Moreover student-teacher relationships seem to be the key mediating factor between other research variables and school adjustment. Further considerations and future directions based on results were discussed.
Gestures are a common phenomenon of human communication. There exists little research concerned with the gestures in science education, and most researches of gestures have focused on individual gestures. However, learning occurs through sociocultural interactions with friends, family, teachers, and others in society. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate and identify the types and features of gestures which were made by elementary students to communicate with peers in science discourse. A group of six fourth-graders was observed in eight science discourses where they talked about ideas related to thermal concepts. The data was collected through interviews and questionnaires. The analysis of the data showed that students' gestures in science discourses could be classified into seven types: signal iconic gesture, illustrative iconic gesture, personal deictic gesture, object deictic gesture, beat gesture, emotional metaphoric gesture, and content metaphoric gesture. It was also found that these gestures had functions of repeating, supplementing, and replacing utterance to communicate with others. Students frequently expressed scientific terms metaphorically as everyday terms through their gestures. Gestures were shared, imitated, and transferred in the communication process, and students' gestures also made influence on other students' ideas through these processes.

The aim of this current study is to survey and analyze the degree of concern and difficult of elementary school teachers in elementary school science classes, and providing the results to teachers as a basic reference to improve their scientific specialties. As a result, firstly, the degree of concern of elementary school teacher in science class is more than normal level. Secondly, the degree of concern in science class differs dependent on environmental factors. Next, the degree of difficulty about science class was under normal level. Among area surveyed, physical and psychological environment were lower compared with other areas, and the difficulty in evaluation of class result was comparably higher than others. At fourth, teacher's degree of difficulty in science class was dependent on environment factors, but not on gender. Finally, there was reverse correlation between degree of concern and the degree of difficulty of elementary school teachers in science class. Further, the degree of concern in student knowledge showed more significant reverse correlation with all of area tested.
The present study is intended to study sole types necessary for shoe designs for elementary school students that are in age groups in growth periods, and 3D midsole design utilizing 3D printing technology. This study analyzed data from the 3D measurement of the feet of 1,227 elementary school students aged 7-13 years residing in the capital region conducted as part of the 6th Anthropometry of Size Korea. In addition, 3D midsoles by sole type were designed utilizing a Rhino CAD, and midsole prototypes were output utilizing a Zortrax-M200 3D Printer. Through a cluster analysis of sole shapes by type, sole shapes were classified into three types. Type 1 has small values of foot lengths and foot breadths, with large toe 1 angles and high arch heights. Type 2 has intermediate values of foot lengths and foot breadths, with small toe 1 angles and high arch heights. Type 3 has large values of foot lengths and foot breadths with small toe 1 angles and low arch heights. On reviewing the results of design of 3D midsoles by sole type, it can be seen that the midsoles were designed according to characteristics by sole type. The results of the sole type analysis in the present study are expected to be meaningful as basic data for the development of shoe insoles for elementary school students.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of scientific argumentation and its development in the process of mutual discussion activities by elementary school students in the 5th grade. The results of this study can be summarized as below: First, students used diversity argumentation components for solving the given argumentation theme, however, most students used the assertion or the basis of a simple expression of their own thoughts as a high ratio, and components of a one directional explanatory argumentation process rather than components of a mutual communicative argumentation process. Second, an asymmetric group showed a high-use ratio of communicative argumentation components and achieved argumentation activities harmoniously between a symmetric group and an asymmetric group in organization of groups for solving argumentation themes. It was found that students in the transitional period showed the highest rate of participation within the discussion process. Moreover, they also showed the highest rate of development of discussion skills whilst in the process of using scientific problems. In conclusion, this phenomenon is caused by highlighting the mutual action between the teacher and the student rather than placing an emphasis on the mutual action among students during field instructions.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-encouragement activities on elementary students' adaptation to school life. Two classes were sampled among 5th grade at Y elementary school in Gwangju Metropolitan city. One class was assigned to experimental group and the other class was assigned to control group. Experimental group had 8 sessions of self-encouragement activities. To prove the effect of self-encouragement activities, data were collected through pre and post test on adaptation to school life of the students, and were analysed via ANCOVA. The results of this study are following; First, the experimental group had improved significantly in school adaptability than the control group. Second, there was showed significant improvement in teacher-student relationship adaptation, peer relationship adaptation, classwork adaptation, school rule adaptation in the experimental group.
