  • Teaching materials are an important aspect to decide the quality of education. Science teaching materials include textbook, workbook, worksheet, OHP materials, posters, computer softwares, experimental equipments, slides, video tapes, and other audio-vidual materials. This comparing research is based on the contemporary teaching materials used in elementary schools of the United States and Korea in 1990s. The results of this study are : 1. The United States has more elementary science teaching materials such as posters, worksheets, computer softwares, OHP materials than Korea. Both countries developed elementary science textbooks, activity books, video tapes, science reading materials, and experimental equipments. 2. The frequancy of using these science teaching materials in Korea is bigger than that in the United States. In Korean elementary science classes, most of instructions are progressed by experimental activities. Korean elementary science textbooks are mostly consisted of science activities, but those of the United States includes science information, science related jobs, STS articles and some portion of science activities. 3. Experimental equipments of the United States are stronger than those of Korea. Various and excellent elementary science teaching materials such as computer softwares, posters, audio-vidual materials, and experimental equipments should be developed and used in elementary science classes for better elementary science education.

  • In this paper, we conducted a case study for lower grade elementary school students by modifying and applying lesson plan of CS Unplugged v4.1. Software education was introduced in the 2015 revised national curriculum in Korea, but the starting age is later than the other countries. Also most projects and researches are concentrated in higher grade elementary school students. It is necessary to lower the entry age of software education in order to nurture human resources leading the fourth industrial revolution era. In this study, we modified the lesson plan of CS Unplugged v4.1 to be suitable for lower grade elementary school students in Korea. The participants were 18 students in the first grade of elementary school, pre&post-test on understanding of computer science principles were conducted for examining the effectiveness. As a result, the average was significantly higher in the post-test than in the pre-test, with t=-2.222, p=0.040(p < .05).

  • Since 2001, we have taught computer in elementary school to become the advanced country of IT in the 21C. However, it is criticized that the contents of information literacy curriculum are weak because they are not the computer science but mainly the computer skills. In 2005, "ICT Education Guide Revision" is published. Thereafter, the curriculum has systematic frame because of the addition of the contents of computer science. However, the curriculum for improving the ability of problem solving which is one of the abilities of human in the information society is somewhat defective. Therefore, in this paper I analysed the curriculums of problem solving field in elementary school level of some countries and proposed the revised curriculum of problem solving field of elementary computer science course.

  • In this knowledge information society, it cannot be too much to accentuate the necessity and importance of computer education. However, the current computer education in elementary school only focuses on computer application and utilization. It is not satisfactory to the needs of knowledge information society to improve mechanic office operation and/or to provide simple utilization of educational software through learning the application software functions. Therefore, based on creative and logical thought, it is necessary at this era to prepare computer education as the essence of science to create new values and to embody knowledge by understanding social and cultural environment of knowledge information society that is continuously in change and development. Accordingly, this study presents the necessity of change based on problems of computer education, and investigates field teacher's opinion on the direction of change in elementary computer curriculum in this knowledge information society. Also, this study presents a computer education curriculum for elementary school students by focusing on a comparison between our current elementary computer curriculum and that of North Carolina and of California in the United States.

  • Algorithm is a fundamental concept for all related research areas in computer science. Though many researches have paid attention to computer algorithm in solving applied problems, few researches have been conducted on how to effectively instruct the computer algorithm concept. This paper proposed the instructional method for the computer algorithm concept by using mathematics problems of the fourth grade, elementary school. We have applied our the instructional methodology to classroom, and empirically tested the effectiveness of our methodology. The results show that the effectiveness of instructional method, compared to the traditional instructional methodology.

  • Presently, elementary school students take coercive action in case error or fault happens while they are using computers. These action are caused by lack of comprehension about basic computer concepts. In this paper, we propose an instructional method for basic computer concepts based on various instructional method. To estimate the effect of proposed method, a class over 16 phases is performed. We show that a effect of class and necessity of development of instructional learning method for basic computer concepts education in elementary schools on the basis of result that analyze reaction of students after class.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find which variables among impulsiveness, aggression, and emotional intelligence can predict the game addiction of elementary school students best. Method: We conducted the present study during the period from April 15, 2004 through June 5, 2004. The subjects of this study were elementary school students chosen from three elementary schools in the Daejeon area. The subjects were selected randomly from 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in those schools. The number of subjects selected was 601. The measurement tools used were the general information questionnaire, computer game addiction scales, impulsiveness scales. aggression scales, and emotional intelligence scales. The data was analyzed using the SPSS statistics program. Results: The mean score of the students was 49.94 on the computer game addiction scale. 56.17 on the impulsiveness scale, 141.19 on the aggression scale, while the mean score of the students on the emotional intelligence scale was 162.78. Various factors were significantly different in the levels of computer game addiction: grade (F=7.343. p=.000). sex (t=6.352. p=.000), school record (F=4.263. p=.004), parents' computer use (F=4.097. p= .008), history of playing games (F=10.739. p=.000), frequency of playing games (F=61.254. p=.000). and number of computer game titles (F=61.673. p= .004). The computer game addiction had significant correlations with impulsiveness (r= .401. p=.000), aggression (r=.612. p=.000). and emotional intelligence (r=.536, p=.000). All three factors of impulsiveness, aggression, and emotional intelligence affected the level of game addiction. Among these factors. the aggression affected the level of addiction the most. Conclusion: These results will help the development of a systematic program for the prevention and treatment of computer game addiction by clarifying the effects of the computer game addiction upon the elementary school students' impulsiveness, aggression, and emotional intelligence.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a Puzzle-Based Computer Science Instruction Model and Learning Program and to confirm the effects. To do so, we selected 2 classes with a similar level of pre-computational thinking in elementary schools in the Jeju Province. After that, from 2 classes, we designated the 5th grade students in 'D' elementary school as group A and designated students of the same grade in 'J' elementary school as group B. In a total of 28 sessions during an 18 week period, a Puzzle-Based Computer Science Learning Program was used with 31 students in group A, and the traditional computer science course was used with 25 students in group B. The results showed that there were significant improvements in computational thinking, which is computational cognition and its creativity, of the students in group A compared to students in group B. Also, this study proved that the Puzzle-Based program correlated with positive changes group A students' Science-Related Affective Domain. In this paper, on the basis of proven effectiveness, we introduce the Puzzle-Based Computer Science Instruction Model and Learning Program as an alternative to traditional, computer science education.
