Electrochemical properties of Georgia kaolinite in aqueous suspension were studied by ion adsorption, potentiometric titration, and electrophoretic mobility measurements. Kaolinite in 0.001 M and 0.1 M NaCl solution showed qualitatively both pH independent and pH depender negative and positive charges through pH range 2.5-11.0 when dissolved aluminum ions from kaolinite were considered as well as $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ as index ions. Electrophoretic mobilities (EM) of 0.02 wt. % kaolinite suspension in distilled water and 0.001 M NaCl solution were approximately constant against mobility measuring time consumed in the electrophoresis cell at different pH values, and isoelectric points(IEP) were around pH 4.7. EM values in 0.1 M NaCl solution were positive and constant against mobility measuring time below pH 4; but above pH 4, EM values were negative for the first 10 seconds followed by positive values which became approximately constant through stepped changes after 10 minutes. Hydrated cations may bind to the six- member oxygen ring sites having multiple partial negative charges on the exterior tetrahedral layer surface by both electrostatic and hydrogen bonding force while hydrated anions bind to the partially positively charged hydrogen atoms on the exterior octahedral layer surface. Parts of the aluminol groups on the exterior octahedral layer surface as well as edge faces may be involved in complex reactions and have both anion and cation exchange capacities in the electrolyte solution above pH 4.

The complex capacitance analysis was performed in order to examine the potential-dependent EDLC characteristics of porous carbon electrodes. The imaginary capacitance profiles $(C_{im}\;vs.\;log\lf)$ were theoretically derived for a cylindrical pore and further extended to multiple pore systems. Two important electrochemical parameters in EDLC can be estimated from the peak-shaped imaginary capacitance plots: total capacitance from the peak area and $\alpha_0$ from the peak position. Using this method, the variation of capacitance and ion conductivity in pores can be traced as a function of electric potential. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was recorded on the mesoporous carbon electrode as a function of electric potential and analyzed by complex capacitance method. The capacitance values obtained from the peak area showed a maximum at 0.3V (vs. SCE), which was in accordance with cyclic voltammetry result. The ionic conductivity in pores calculated from the peak position showed a maximum at 0.2 V (vs. SCE), then decreased with an increase in potential. This behavior seems due to the enhanced electrostatic interaction between ion and surface charge that becomes enriched at more positive potentials.

To investigate the mode of bactericidal action for antimicrobial peptide, pediocin, synthetic and mutant pediocins were prepared by direct chemical synthesis. Native pediocin was purified from Pedio-coccus acidilactici M and its conformational structure and bactericidal functions were analyzed and compared to synthetic pediocin. Schematic mode of pediocin actions, how pediocin binds on the target cell membrane, penetrates and makes tunnel are proposed. For these purposes, primary and secondary structures of pediocin was analyzed and disulfide bond assignment was also done. The pediocin purified from P. acidilactici M had high effective bactericidal ability against gram positive bacteria, especially Listeria monocytogenes and was very stable at extreme pHs and even at high temperatures such as autoclaving temperature (121$^{\circ}C$). Pediocin was consisted of 44 amino acids with four cysteines. Novel synthetic peptides were achieved by solid phase peptide synthesis(SPPS) method. To explain the function of cysteine in C-terminal region, mutant pediocin, Ped[C24A+C44A], was synthesized and their structural and biological functions were analyzed. Second mutant pediocin, Ped[KllE], was prepared to explain the function of lysine at 11 of N-terminal part of pediocin, especially loop of $\beta$-sheet, and to predict the initial binding site of pediocin. The native and synthetic pediocins was showed random coil conformation by spectropolarimetry in moderate conditions. This conformation was observed in extreme conditions such as high temperature and low and high pHs, also. Circular dichroism(CD) data also showed the existence of $\beta$-turn structure in N-terminal part both native and synthetic pediocins. A structural model for pediocin predicts that 18 amino acids in the N-terminal part of the peptide assume a three-strand $\beta$-sheet conformation. This random coil in C-terminal part of pediocin was converted to folding structure, helix structure, in nonpolar solvents such as alcohol and TFE. The disulfide bond between $^{9}$ Cys and $^{14}$ Cys was concrete and inevitable, however, evidences of disulfide bond between $^{24}$ Cys and $^{44}$ Cys was not. Data of Ped[C24A+C44A], pediocin mutant showed that $^{44}$ Cys was required during killing the target cells but not inevitable, since Ped[C24A+C44A] still have bactericidal activity but much less than native pediocin. Another pediocin mutant, Ped[KllE], had still bactericidal activity, was controversial to propose that positive charge like as $^{11}$ Lys in loop or hinge in bacteriocin bound or helped to binding to microorganism with electrostatic interaction between cell membrane especially teichoic acid and positive amino acid nonspecifically. The conformation of pediocin among native, synthetic and mutant pediocins did not show big difference. The conformations between oxidized and reduced pediocin were almost similar regardless of native or synthetic.
This study presented simple and efficient fabrication of chemical sensors for the detection of acidic gas using 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane as an indicator because it can be promising materials having property of the rapid color change according to the variation of pH. The dissociation of proton and dye in acidic condition as changing of ion pairs give rise to dramatically change the absorbance intensity of 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane, which can be easily applied to the development of chemical sensors. In addition, indicator dyes having negatively charge in aqueous phase can be easily fabricated using layer-by-layer (LBL) methods by way of electrostatic interaction. For the proof of concept, we demonstrated the abrupt presentation of skeleton symbol on the chemical sensor, which could be resulted from the reaction of 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane as background color with acidic gas. Thus, the rapid appearance of symbol will induce user's caution under the emergency condition. The presented chemical gas sensor using 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane have strong advantages. First, the fabrication process of gas sensor was very simple and low-cost. Secondly, sensors reacted by acidic gas could be reused for several times. Finally, the chemical gas sensor would be environmentally friend, which can be a basic tool for the realization of eco-organic sensor device.
The potential energy of adsorbate molecules in the main channel of $K^+$ ion exchanged zeolite L(K-L) was calculated. In K-L which adsorbs three molecules per unit cell, the interaction energies of $H_2O,\;NH_3,\;CH_3NH_2,\;(CH_3)_2NH,\;and\;(CH_3)_3N$ molecules with zeolite lattice are 61.11, 62.31, 65.68, 74.65, and 79.88kJ/mol, respectively. These values are less by 3.7∼12.6kJ/mol than $K^+$ ion affinities with adsorbing molecules. These results may be due to the facts that the electrostatic energies are reduced by the negative charge of the lattice oxygens. The distribution of adsorption sites of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ in K-L was investigated by a technique of temperature programmed desorption. The experimental value of desorption energies of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ on K-L are in good agreement with the theoritical values. It is concluded that the desorption of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ on K-L is the first-order desorption with free readsorption.
3D-QSARs on the fungicidal activity with N-phenylbenzenesulfonamide and N-phenyl-2-thienylsul-fonamide analogues (1-34) against Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum) were discussed quantitatively using CoMFA (comparative molecular field analysis) and CoMSIA (comparative molecular similarity indices analysis) methods, respectively. Generally, the CoMFA models have better predictability and fitness than the CoMSIA models. The fungicidal activities, according to the information of the optimized CoMF A 2 model $(r^2\;_{cv.}=0.523\;&\;r^2\;_{ncv.}=0.956)$, were dependent on the electrostatic field of the N-phenylbenzenesulfonamide analogues. Therefore, from the results of graphical analyses on the contour maps with the optimized CoMFA 2 model, it is expected that the characters of $R_4-substituents$ on the N-phenyl ring as steric and positive charge favor will contribute to the fungicidal activity against Fusarium wilt.
The adsorption of disperse yellow 3 (DY 3) on granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated for isothermal adsorption and kinetic and thermodynamic parameters by experimenting with initial concentration, contact time, temperature, and pH of the dye as adsorption parameters. In the pH change experiment, the adsorption percent of DY 3 on activated carbon was highest in the acidic region, pH 3 due to electrostatic attraction between the surface of the activated carbon with positive charge and the anion (OH-) of DY 3. The adsorption equilibrium data of DY 3 fit the Langmuir isothermal adsorption equation best, and it was found that activated carbon can effectively remove DY 3 from the calculated separation factor (RL). The heat of adsorption-related constant (B) from the Temkin equation did not exceed 20 J mol-1, indicating that it is a physical adsorption process. The pseudo second order kinetic model fits well within 10.72% of the error percent in the kinetic experiments. The plots for Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion model were divided into two straight lines. The intraparticle diffusion rate was slow because the slope of the stage 2 (intraparticle diffusion) was smaller than that of stage 1 (boundary layer diffusion). Therefore, it was confirmed that the intraparticle diffusion was rate controlling step. The free energy change of the DY 3 adsorption by activated carbon showed negative values at 298 ~ 318 K. As the temperature increased, the spontaneity increased. The enthalpy change of the adsorption reaction of DY 3 by activated carbon was 0.65 kJ mol-1, which was an endothermic reaction, and the entropy change was 2.14 J mol-1 K-1.

In this study, silicon/carbon nanotube/carbon (Si/CNT/C) composites for anode were prepared to improve the volume expansion of silicon used as a high-capacity anode material. Si/CNT were prepared by electrostatic attraction of the positively charged Si and negatively charged CNT and then hydrothermal synthesis was performed to obtain the spherical Si/CNT/C composites. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were used as binders for electrode preparation, and coin cell was assembled using 1.0 M LiPF6 (EC:DMC:EMC = 1:1:1 vol%) electrolyte and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additive. The physical properties of Si/CNT/C anode materials were analyzed using SEM, EDS, XRD and TGA, and the electrochemical performances of lithium-ion batteries were investigated by charge-discharge cycle, rate performance, dQ/dV and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. Also, it was confirmed that both capacity and rate performance were significantly improved using the PAA/SBR binder and 10 wt% FEC-added electrolyte. It is found that Si/CNT/C have the reversible capacity of 914 mAh/g, the capacity retention ratio of 83% during 50 cycles and the rate performance of 70% in 2 C/0.1 C.
In this study, to improve capacity and cycle stability, the pitch coated nano silicon sheets/CNT composites were prepared through electrostatic bonding of nano silicon sheets and CNT. Silica sheets were synthesized by hydrolyzing TEOS on the crystal planes of NaCl, and then nano silicon sheets were prepared by using magnesiothermic reduction method. To fabricate the nano silicon sheets/CNT composites, the negatively charged CNT after the acid treatment was used to assemble the positively charged nano silicon sheets modified with APTES. THF as a solvent was used in the coating process of PFO pitch. The physical properties of the prepared anode composites were analysed by FE-SEM, XRD and EDS. The electrochemical performances of the synthesized anode composites were performed by current charge/discharge, rate performances, differential capacity and EIS tests in the electrolyte LiPF6 dissolve solvent (EC:DMC:EMC = 1:1:1 vol%). It was found that the anode material with high capacity and stability could be synthesized when high composition of silicon and conductivity of CNT were used. The pitch coated nano silicon sheets/CNT anode composites showed initial discharge capacity of 2344.9 mAh/g and the capacity retention ratio of 81% after 50 cycles. The electrochemical property of pitch coated anode material was more improved than that of the nano silicon sheets/CNT composites.
3D QSAR studies for the fungicidal activities against resistive phytophthora blight (RPC; 95CC7303) and sensitive phytophthora blight (Phytopthora capsici) (SPC; 95CC7105) by a series of new 2-alkoxyphenyl-3-phenylthioisoindoline-1-one derivatives (X: A=propynyl & B=2-chloropropenyl) were studied using comparative molecular field analyses (CoMFA) methodology. The CoMFA models were generated from the two different alignment, atom based fit (AF) alignment and field fit (FF) alignment. The atom based alignment exhibited a higher statistical results than that of field fit alignment. The best models, A3 and A7 using combination fields of H-bond field, standard field, LUMO and HOMO molecular orbital field as additional descriptors were selected to improve the statistic of the present CoMFA models. The statistical results of the two models showed the best predictability of the fungicidal activities based on the cross-validated value $q^2\;(r^2_{cv.}=RPC:\;0.625\;&\;SPC:\;0.834)$, non cross-validated value $(r^2_{ncv.}=RPC:\;0.894\;&\;SPC:\;0.915)$ and PRESS value (RPC: 0.105 & SPC: 0.103), respectively. Based on the findings, the predictive ability and fitness of the model for SPC was better than that of the model for RPC. The fugicidal activities exhibited a strong correlation with steric $(66.8{\sim}82.8%)$, electrostatic $(10.3{\sim}4.6%)$ and molecular orbital field (SPC: HOMO, 12.6% and RPC: LUMO, 22.9%) factors of the molecules. The novel selective character for fungicidal activity between two fungi depend on the positive charge of ortho, meta-positions on the N-phenyl ring and size of hydrophilicity of a substituents on the S-phenyl ring.
