  • We describe the importance of zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO NP) concentration in the enhancement of electrical properties in a lead sulfide quantum dot (PbS QD)-based shortwave infrared (SWIR) photodetector. ZnO NPs were synthesized using the sol-gel method. The concentration of the ZnO NPs was controlled as 20, 30 and 40 mg/mL in this study. Note that the ZnO NPs layer is commonly used as an electron transport layer in PbS QDs SWIR photodetectors. The photo-to-dark ratio, which is an important parameter of a photodetector, was intensively examined to evaluate the electrical performance. The 20 mg/mL condition of ZnO NPs exhibited the highest photo-to-dark ratio value of 5 at -1 V, compared with 1.8 and 0.4 for 30 mg/mL and 40 mg/mL, respectively. This resulted because the electron mobility decreased when the concentration of ZnO NPs was higher than the optimized value. Based on our results, the concentration of ZnO NPs was observed to play an important role in the electrical performance of the PbS QDs SWIR photodetector.

  • The use of multi scale modeling concepts and simulation techniques to study the destabilization of an ultrathin layer of oxide interface between a metal substrate and the surrounding environment is considered. Of particular interest are chemo-mechanical behavior of this interface in the context of a molecular-level description of stress corrosion cracking. Motivated by our previous molecular dynamics simulations of unit processes in materials strength and toughness, we examine the challenges of dealing with chemical reactivity on an equal footing with mechanical deformation, (a) understanding electron transfer processes using first-principles methods, (b) modeling cation transport and associated charged defect migration kinetics, and (c) simulation of pit nucleation and intergranular deformation to initiate the breakdown of the oxide interlayer. These problems illustrate a level of multi-scale complexity that would be practically impossible to attack by other means; they also point to a perspective framework that could guide future research in the broad computational science community.

  • The effects of the zinc oxide (ZnO) preparing process on the performance of inverted organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) were explored. The morphology and size of ZnO nanoparticles were controlled, leading to more efficient charge collection from device and higher electron mobility compared with nanospheres. Nanosized ZnO particles were synthesized by using zinc acetate dihydrate and potassium hydroxide in methanol. Also, water was added into the reaction medium to control the morphology of ZnO nanocrystals from spherical particles to rods, and $NH_4OH$ was used to prevent the gelation of dispersion. Solution-processed ZnO thin films were deposited onto the ITO/glass substrate by using spin coating process and then ZnO films were used as an electron transport layer in inverted organic photovoltaic cells. The analyses were carried out by using TEM, FE-SEM, AFM, DLS, UV-Vis spectroscopy, current density-voltage characteristics and solar simulator.

  • The growth and characterization of $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As/In_{0.5}Al_{0.5}As$ narrow-gap inverted high electron mobility transistor structures, developed as a candidate material for spin-injection devices, are presented in this study. We have grown samples possessing surface $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ channels of different thicknesses (30 nm and 60 nm) both with and without a thin 3 nm $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ cap layer by using molecular beam epitaxy. We then investigated the in-plane transport properties as well as the Rashba spin-orbit coupling constant of the two-dimensional electron gas confined at the heterojunction interface.

  • The release of nanoscale membrane-bound vesicles is common in all three domains of life. These vesicles are involved in a variety of biological processes such as cell-to-cell communication, horizontal gene transfer, and substrate transport. Prokaryotes including bacteria and archaea release membrane vesicles (MVs) (20 to 400 nm in diameter) into their extracellular milieu. In spite of structural differences in cell envelope, both Gram-positive and negative bacteria produce MVs that contain the cell membrane of each bacterial species. Archaeal MVs characteristically show surface-layer encircling the vesicles. Filamentous fungi and yeasts as eukaryotic microbes produce bilayered exosomes that have varying electron density. Microbes also form intracellular vesicles and minicells that are similar to MVs and exosomes in shape. Electron and fluorescence microscopy could reveal the presence of DNA in MVs and exosomes. Given the biogenesis of extracellular vesicles from the donor cell, in situ high-resolution microscopy can provide insights on the structural mechanisms underlying the formation and release of microbial extracellular vesicles.

  • Electroluminescent(EL) devices based on organic thin films have attracted lots of interests in large-area light-emitting display. One of the problems of such device is a lifetime, where a degradation of the cell is possibly due to an organic layer's thickness, morphology and interface with electrode. In this study, light-emitting organic electroluminescent devices were fabricated using Alq$_3$(8-hydroxyquinolinate aluminum) and TPD(N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-[1-1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine).Where Alq$_3$ is an electron-transport and emissive layer, TPD is a hole-transport layer. The cell structure is ITO/TPD/Alq$_3$/Al and the cell is fabricated by vacuum evaporation method. In a measurement of current-voltage characteristics, we obtained a turn-on voltage at about 9 V. And we used other buffer layer of PPy(Polypyrrole) with ITO/PPy/TPD/Alq$_3$/Al structure. We observed a surface morphology by AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy), UV/visible absorption spectrum, and PL(Photoluminescence) spectrum. We obtained the UV/visible absorption peak at 358nm in TPD and at 359nm in Alq$_3$, and at 225nm and the PL peaks at 410nm in TPD and at 510nm in Alq$_3$ and at 350nm. We also studied EL spectrum in the cell structure of ITO/TPD/Alq$_3$/Al and ITO/PPy/TPD/Alq$_3$/Al and we observed the EL spectrum peak at 510nm from our cell

We also investigated stability of the devices using buffer layer with blend of PEI (Poly ether imide) and TPD by varying mot ratios between ITO and Alq$_3$. In current-voltage characteristics measurement, we obtained the turn-on voltage at about 6 V and observed an anomalous behavior at 3∼4 V. And we used other buffer layer of PEDT(3,4-pyrazino-3',4'-ethylenedithio-2,2',5,5'-tetrathiafulvalenium) with ITO/PEDT/TPD/Alq$_3$Al structure. We observed a surface morphology by AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy), UV/visible absorption spectrum, and PL(Photoluminescence) spectrum. • The active sites, intracellular transport, function of cellulase in association with the disintegration of the storage materials of the endosperm cells during seed maturation and after-ripening of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer seeds were studied by electron microscopy. Cytochemical activities of the cellulase occurred in protein bodies and vesicles of endosperm cells in seed with red seed coat. In after-ripening seed, the activities were strongly found in the cell wall of endosperm near the umbiliform layer and on neighbouring vesicles, so it is assumed that these cells begin to be decomposed. Cellulase activities were initiated before the decomposition of storage materials. But, no activity was observed in the umbiliform layer, so it is suggested that cellulase lose its activity after the completion of lysis process.
