  • We derived analytically the generalized curvature linear equation useful in the initial optical design of a two-mirror system with finite object distance, including an infinite object distance from paraxial ray tracing and Seidel third order aberration theory for coma coefficient. These aberration coefficients for finite object distance were described by the curvature, the inter-mirror distance, and the effective focal length. The analytical equations were solved by using a computer with a numerical analysis method. Two useful linear relationships, determined by the generalized curvature linear equations relating the curvatures of the two mirrors, for the cancellation of each aberration were shown in the numerical solutions satisfying the nearly zero condition ($<10^{-10}$) for each aberration coefficient. These equations can be utilized easily and efficiently at the step of initial optical design of a two-mirror system with finite object distance.

  • Modern electronic circuits are of importance for the function of communication, traffic systems and security systems. An intentional threat to these systems could be of big casualties and economic disasters. This study has examined susceptibility of electronic circuits inside the cavity by HPEM(High Power Electromagnetics). The UWB measurements were done at an anechoic chamber using a RADAN voltage source, which can generate a transient impulse of about 200 kV. The HPEM wave penetrated inside the metal case appeared to the long damped ringwave of pulse length compared with the incident wave. In addition, the resonant frequency generated inside the metal case occurred primarily in the range of 1~3 GHz. The frequency band of 1~3 GHz was influenced on the electronic circuit, which was confirmed by an external antenna and an internal absorber. The electronic circuit was influenced by HPEM infiltrated into the cavity at the 86 kV/m out of the metal cases. Also in case of an absorber the susceptibility of an electronic circuit was smallest among other cases(aperture, antenna). It is considered that absorber has a function absorbing electromagnetic wave infiltrated into the cavity and simultaneously limiting resonance by varying a boundary condition inside the cavity. Based on the results, electronic equipment systems could be applied to protection that has suited system requirements.

  • The autotstigmatic null lens system is designed and constructed for the fabrication of a parabolic mirror with the diameter of 450 mm(f/2.7). And the measurement reliability is also analyzed theoretically by means of the tolerancing technique using lens design software(CODE V). From this analysis, we can precisely fabricate a parabolic mirror with the large diameter of 450 mm(f/2.7). Meanwhile, in order to confirm the fabrication results by the autostigmatic method, the mirror surface is tested again by an autocollimating method that uses only a plane mirror without any null lens.

  • We design and fabricate an autostigmatic null lens system assembled in a fixed tube mount in order to evaluate the shape of an aluminum hyperbolic mirror with the diameter of 300 mm and the f-number of 1.98, which is fabricated by a high precision aspherical DTM (diamond turning machine). Also, we evaluate the degree of shape of the aspherical mirror by this autostigmatic null lens testing method. The autostigmatic null lens system assembling in a fixed tube mount has several advantages of light weight, good mechanical stability, etc. The permissible fabricating limits of null lenses and a mount are determined by considering various tolerances to assure the measurement reliability.

  • In this paper, metal insulator metal (MIM) plasmonic slot cavity narrow band-pass filters (NBPFs) are studied. The metal and dielectric of the structures are silver (Ag) and air, respectively. To improve the quality factor and attenuation range, two novel NBPFs based on tapered structures and double cavity systems are proposed and numerically analyzed by using the two-dimensional (2-D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The impact of different parameters on the transmission spectrum is scrutinized. We have shown that increasing the cavities' lengths increases the resonance wavelength in a linear relationship, and also increases the quality factor, and simultaneously the attenuation of the wave transmitted through the cavities. Furthermore, increasing the slope of tapers of the input and output waveguides decreases attenuation of the wave transmitted through the waveguide, but simultaneously decreases the quality factor, hence there should be a trade-off between loss and quality factor. However, the idea of adding tapers to the waveguides' discontinuities of the simple structure helps us to improve the device total performance, such as quality factor for the single cavity and attenuation range for the double cavity. According to the proposed NBPFs, two, three, and four-port power splitters functioning at 1320 nm and novel ultra-compact two-wavelength and triple-wavelength demultiplexers in the range of 1300-1550 nm are proposed and the impacts of different parameters on their performances are numerically investigated. The idea of using tapered waveguides at the structure discontinuities facilitates the design of ultra-compact demultiplexers and splitters.

  • Waveguides are transmission lines that guide electromagnetic waves in the desired direction and are utilized in various fields such as medical devices, radar systems, and satellite communications. Computational electromagnetics (CEM) is essential for designing and optimizing waveguides. The finite element method (FEM), which is one of the numerical analysis techniques, is efficient in solving closed problems such as waveguides. In order to apply FEM for waveguide analysis, boundary conditions that truncate the computational domain are required. This paper performs electromagnetic simulations using absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) and waveguide port boundary conditions (WPBC) in 2/D and 3/D waveguides using the finite element method and compared their performances. The accuracy of the analysis was verified by comparing the results with HFSS, a representative commercial electromagnetic simulation software. Simulation results confirm that applying WPBC allows for smaller analysis domains than ABC.

  • A high speed ultra-compact lens with a diffractive optical element (DOE) is designed, which can be applied to mobile communication devices such as IMT2000, PDA, notebook computer, etc. The designed hybrid lens has sufficiently high performance of less than f/2.2, compact size of 3.3 mm (1st surf. to image), and wide field angle of more than 30 deg. compared with the specifications of a single lens. By proper choice of the aspheric and DOE surface which has very large negative dispersion, we can correct chromatic and high order aberrations through the optimization technique. From Seidel third order aberration theory and Sweatt modeling, the initial data and surface configurations, that is, the combination condition of the DOE and the aspherical surface are obtained. However, due to the consideration of diffraction efficiency of a DOE, we can choose only four cases as the optimization input, and present the best solution after evaluating and comparing those four cases. On the other hand, we also report dramatic improvement in optical performance by inserting another refractive lens (so-called, field flattener), that keeps the refractive power of an original DOE lens and makes the petzval sum zero in the original DOE lens system. ystem.

  • By having accurate knowledge of the magnetic field distribution and the thrust calculation in linear synchronous motors, assessing the performance and optimization of the motor design are possible. In this paper, after carrying out a performance analysis of a single-sided wound secondary linear synchronous motor by varying the motor design parameters in a layer model and a d-q model, machine single- and multi-objective design optimizations are carried out to improve the thrust density of the motor based on the motor weight and the motor efficiency multiplied by its power factor by defining various objective functions including a flexible objective function. A genetic algorithm is employed to search for the optimal design. The results confirm that an overall improvement in the thrust mean, efficiency multiplied by the power factor, and thrust to the motor weight ratio are obtained. Several design conclusions are drawn from the motor analysis and the design optimization. Finally, a finite element analysis is employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the employed machine models and the proposed optimization method.
