  • Results of an analysis of the continuous motion effect for FMCW-SAR system and a signal processing to correct it are presented in this paper. SAR images reconstructed by back-projection algorithm are included as well. To analyze how platform velocity and sampling frequency affect the continuous motion effect, FMCW signal model was used, and the signal processing in time-doppler(t, $k_u$) domain was adopted. Then, back-projection algorithm and modified matched-filter was used to reconstruct SAR images, and it was validated using measured data by airborne FMCW-SAR system in X-band frequency.

  • In this paper, we introduce a method of selection for the optimal transmission polarization of a W-band seeker through the extraction of the one-dimensional scattering center of a ground tank target. We calculated the surface scattering and edge scattering using the shooting and bouncing ray tracing method of the CST A-solver. Based on 4-channel RCS data, using the one-dimensional RELAX algorithm, which is a kind of spectral estimation technique, scattering centers of ground targets were extracted. According to the changes in the polarization state and look angle, we compared and analyzed the scattering center results. Through simulation, we verified that the scattering center results can be applied when feature vectors are used for target recognition.

  • In this paper, the authors present a new design for a broad-band metamaterial(MTM) absorber that utilizes flexible substrate. The proposed MTM unit cell is constructed by a electric-inducive-capacitive(ELC) resonator and a cut-wire on the same side of the flexible polyimide substrate. To reduce the radar cross section at frequencies other than the targeted frequency bands, the metallic pattern layer of the proposed structure is placed facing toward the incident wave propagation direction. A prototype absorber was fabricated with a planar array of $33{\times}45$ unit cells. Our experiments showed that the proposed absorber exhibits a peak absorption rate of 92 % and 93 % at 9.06 GHz and 15.0 GHz, respectively, and 75 % of the full-width at half-maximum(FWHM) bandwidth is achieved. The proposed backplane-less MTM structure can be used for a broad-band microwave absorber and irregular surface applications.

  • Simplified factorizing-technique to improve the efficiency on computational procedure and the complexity of the conventional back-projection algorithm, which is used to reconstruct airborne FMCW-SAR image, is suggested, and the reconstruction process of SAR image by this simplified factorizing-technique are presented in this paper. This technique can be efficiently applied to airborne FMCW-SAR having a relatively narrow beamwidth and long synthetic aperture length, and its basic rationale is to exclude the data that has low level of contribution during computational procedure. Using the raw data of practical airborne FMCW-SAR system, performances of this proposed technique such as SAR image quality and processing time were compared and analyzed.

  • Non-stochiometric CdS:H films grown on polyethersulfon (PES) flexible polymer substrates at room temperature by R.F. sputtering technique. They exhibited a dark- and photo-sheet resistance of $2.7\times10^5$ and $\sim\;50\;{\Omega}$/square, respectively. These values were realized by an optimum control of both hydrogen doping-levels and the surface morphologies of the films. The comparison between the real and the simulated results for the shielding and the transmission by the free space measurement system in the X-band frequency range (8.2 - 12.4 GHz) was also addressed in this study. Samples overlapped with 13 layers of CdS:H/PES were consistent with the transmission results of pure aluminum metal films ($0.1\;{\Omega}$/square) deposited on PES substrates. As a result, by the simples tacking of the CdS:H/PES layers, the perfect control of the shielding and the transmission of the EM wave in the range of X-band frequency is possible by avisible light alone, and their results are especially very outstanding findings in the stealth function of the radome(Radar+Dome) such as aircrafts, ships, and missiles.

  • The exact information on geological structures and characteristics of the subsurface must be acquired to secure quality and safety of constructions. GPR technique, one of the most updated geophysical methods, is known for its applicability to shallow-depth underground surveys. The purpose of this study is to examine the usefulness of GPR method in constructions for detailed subsurface investigations, especially detecting the boundary between basement rock and its overburden. To find appropriate depths of the geological boundaries, it is necessary to obtain velocity of electromagnetic wave propagating into the ground. Wave velocity 0.096 m/ns estimated from velocity analysis using CMP gathers is used for depth conversion from time section. The depths of geological boundaries from GPR profiles are very well correlated with boring data. In addition, GPR survey has found some undulations of the geological boundaries due to weathering, which cannot be provided by conventional coring approaches.

  • An X-band $8{\times}16$ dual-polarized active phased array antenna system has been implemented based on the substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) technology having low propagation loss, complete EM shielding, and high power handling characteristics. Compared with the microstrip case, 1 dB less is the measured insertion loss(0.65 dB) of the 16-way SIW power distribution network and doubled(3 dB improved) is the measured radiation efficiency(73 %) of the SIW sub-array($1{\times}16$) antenna element. These significant improvements of the power division loss and the radiation efficiency using the SIW, save more than 30 % of the total power consumption, in the active phased array antenna systems, through substantial reduction of the maximum output power(P1 dB) of the high power amplifiers. Using the X-band $8{\times}16$ dual-polarized active phased array antenna system fabricated by the SIW technology, the main radiation beam has been steered by 0, 5, 9, and 18 degrees in the accuracy of 2 degree maximum deviation by simply generating the theoretical control vectors. Performing thermal cycle and vacuum tests, we have found that the SIW array antenna system be eligible for the space environment qualification. We expect that the high efficiency SIW array antenna system be very effective for high performance radar systems, massive MIMO for 5G mobile systems, and various millimeter-wave systems(60 GHz WPAN, 77 GHz automotive radars, high speed digital transmission systems).

  • This paper discusses the singly curved phased reflector for reduced RCS pattern, which has minimized RCS level at boresight with a null by phase cancelation and the lowered RCS level of main beam by splitting the main beam into multi directions. Considering the reduced level of boresight and main beam compared to the same sized reference PEC, this proposed multi-beam reflector can be adopted in the mono-static radar and the bi-static radar environment. The proposed reflector is a multi-beam reflector, which has different phase distributions at each row for different steering angle. It is designed through an intermediate stage of a single and dual-beam reflector. The behaviors of the designed reflectors are verified through full-wave simulation and experiment. The reflectors are designed in the frequency of 10 GHz and it has a size $240{\times}180mm^2$($8{\times}6\;{\lambda}^2$) with the curvature k=3.3. From the measured results, the proposed reflectors reduce the reflected power by 17 dB at boresight.

  • With the rapid and wide-spread use of cellular telephones much attention has been focussed on propagation in the urban area crowed with buildings and houses. It is often surrounded by hills, forests, and mountains. The importance of surface scattering intereference between transmitters and receivers on the rough surfaces has been interested and investigated. Therefore, a prediction method is necessary to estimate the influence of rough surfaces on microwave radio propagation. Moreover, most of the mobile communications are performed based on the digital communication system rather than the analog one. In this case, we must pay more careful attention to the signal delay caused by the phase delay due to the multi-path propagation. In this paper we have analyzed numerically scattering of electromagnetic waves from building walls by using FVTD(Finite Volume Time Domain) method. We consider three different types of rough surfaces such as periodic, random, and composite structures. We calculate the bistatic normalized radar cross section (NRCS) for horizontal and vertical polarization, and we take account of the conventional optical reflection which corresponds to the n-th Bragg reflection for periodic structures. In addition, we investigated what conditions are needed in order to be able to ignore the higher order Bragg reflection for the periodic structures.
