This paper presents transient response behavior and frequency-dependent ground impedance of a single carbon ground electrode. The ground impedance of the carbon ground electrode was measured as a function of frequency of injected currents and simulated by using the distributed parameter circuit model with due regard to the frequency-dependent soil parameters, and the transient response behavior of the carbon ground electrode against impulse currents were investigated. As a consequence, the frequency-dependent ground impedance of the carbon ground electrode showed the capacitive behavior, that is, the ground impedance decreases with increasing the frequency of injected currents and lowers at the fast front time of impulse current. It was found that the carbon ground electrode is effective in grounding system for lightning protection. The ground impedance simulated with due regard to the frequency-dependent soil parameters was in good agreement with the measured data. The adequacy of the simulation technique and the distributed parameter circuit model for the carbon ground electrode was verified. It is expected that the simulation methodology, which analyzes the frequency-dependent ground impedance of the carbon ground electrode proposed in this work, can be used in the design of a grounding system for protection against lightning.
This paper describes the possibility of analyzing gait pattern from the changes of the lower leg electrical impedance. This impedance was measured by the four-electrode method. Two current electrodes were applied to the thigh, knee, and foot., and two potential electrodes were applied to the lateral, medial, and posterior position of human leg. The correlation coefficients of the joint angle and the impedance change from human leg movement was obtained using a electrogoniometer and 4ch impedance measurement system developed in this study. We found the optimal electrode position for knee and ankle joint movements based on high correlation coefficient, least interference, and maximum magnitude of impedance change. The correlation coefficients of the ankle, knee, and the hip movements were -0.913, 0.984 and 0.823, respectively. From such features of the human leg impedance, it has been made clear that different movement patterns exhibit different impedance patterns and impedance level. This system showed feasibility that lower leg movement could be easily measured by impedance measurement system with a few skin-electrodes.
In this study, ubiquitous health care system attaching in chair to monitor ECG for health care was developed at the unconsciousness state. The system conveniently and simple measured ECG at non-consciousness. We measured the contact impedance to skin-electrode of metal mesh electrodes of the system. Contact impedance enable the electrode to use for ECG measurement. The results are that the impedance of the metal mesh electrodes according to sizes is low when the size is 4$cm^2$. As the result, when the size of the metal mesh electrode is 4$cm^2$, the electrode is fit for ECG measurement. We can acquired by positing the arm on the metal mesh electrode. The ECG signal was detected using a high-input-impedance bio-amplifier, and then passed filter circuitry. The measured signal transmitted to a PC through the bluetooth wireless communication and monitored. Data of the non-constrained ECG system attaching in chair is noise-data when comparing metal mesh electrode with the Ag/Agcl electrode but the data is significant to monitor ECG for check the body state.
The ground resistance has been used as a method of estimating the capability of counterpoise. When transient currents blow through a ground electrode, it is reasonable to evaluate the performance of ground electrode system as a ground impedance instead of ground resistance. However, the measurement method of ground impedance for counterpoise is not clearly presented. This paper describes the measurement method of ground impedance considering the earth mutual resistances and AC mutual coupling. When we measure the ground impedance, the error due to earth mutual resistances depends on the distance between the auxiliary electrodes and the electrode under test. The measurement accuracy of high frequency ground impedance is mainly influenced by the location of the current electrode and the potential electrode.
This paper describes the possibility of analyzing gait pattern from the variation of the lower leg electrical impedance. This impedance is measured by the four-electrode method. Two current electrodes are applied to the thigh, knee, and foot, and two potential electrodes are applied to the lateral, medial, and posterior position of lower leg. The correlation coefficients of the joint angle and the impedance change from human leg movement was obtained using electrogoniometer and 4ch impedance measurement system developed in this study. We found the optimal electrode position for ankle, knee and hipjoint movements based on high correlation coefficient, least interference, and maximum magnitude of impedance change. The correlation coefficients of the ankle, knee, and the hip movements -0.87, 0.957 and 0.80. respectively. From such features of the lower leg impedance, it has been made clear that different movement patterns exhibit different impedance patterns and impedance level. This system showed possibility that lower leg movement could be easily measured by impedance measurement system with a few skin-electrodes.
A grounding electrode has the transient grounding impedance characteristics against lightning surges. So the performance of grounding electrodes should be evaluated as a grounding impedance as well as the ground resistance. The frequency-dependent grounding impedance is varied with the shape and size of grounding electrode and is divided into both inductive and capacitive behaviors. This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the grounding impedance determined by the size of grounding electrode using the distributed parameter circuit model. EMTP and Matlab programs were used in calculating the frequency-dependent grounding impedances of vertical grounding electrodes. It was found that the frequency-dependent grounding characteristics of vertical grounding electrodes are characterized by the distributed parameters which are changed in the dimension of grounding electrodes.
We studied the characteristics of the compound electrode and found that the compound electrode provides the four-electrode method in a compact form. We developed a new method of measuring the skin impedance using simple electrodes at low frequencies. At high frequencies where the effect of internal tissue impedance is not negligible, we used the compensation method using compound electrodes since they measure the voltage right under the skin. At 50 kHz, we measured the real part of the skin impedance of less than $80\;{\Omega}$ on the thorax.
A ground electrode subjected to lightning surge current shows the transient impedance behaviors. The ground electrode for protection against lightning should be evaluated in view of the transient grounding impedance and conventional grounding impedance, not ground resistance. The transient impedance characteristics of ground electrodes are influenced by the shape of ground electrode and the soil characteristics, as well as the waveform of lightning surge current. In order to propose a simulation method of analyzing the transient impedance characteristics of the grounding system in practical use, this paper suggests a theoretical analysis method of distributed parameter circuit model to simulate the transient impedance characteristics of counterpoise subjected to lightning surge current. EMTP and Matlab programs were employed to compute the transient grounding impedances of three counterpoises with different lengths. As a consequence, the simulated results using the proposed distributed parameter circuit model are in good agreement with the measured results.
For application of carbon nano-tube (CNT) as a counter electrode materials of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), the electrochemical behavior of CNT electrode was studied, employing cyclic-voltammetry (C-V) and impedance spectroscopy. Fabrication of CNT-paste and formation of CNT-counter electrode for characteristic measurement have been carried out using ball-milling and doctor blade process, respectively. Unit cell for measurements was assembled using Pt electrode, CNT electrode, and iodine-embedded electrolyte. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used for structural investigation of CNT powder and electrode. Sheet resistance of electrode was measured with 4-point probe method. Electrochemical properties of electrode, C-V and impedance spectrum, were studied, employing potentiogalvanostat (EG&G 273A) and lock in amplifier (EG&G 5210). As a results, the sheet resistance of CNT electrode is almost similar to that of F-doped SnO2 (FTO) coated glass substrate as approximately 10 ohm/sq. From C-V and impedance spectroscopy measurements, it was found that CNT electrode has high reaction rate and low interface reaction resistance between CNT surface and electrolyte. These results provides that CNT electrode were superior to that of conventional Pt electrode. Particularly, the reaction rate in the CNT electrode is about thrice high than Pt electrode. Therefore. CNT electrode is to be good candidate material for counter electrode in DSSC.
