  • Due to commercialization of nuclear power, most countries have taken interest in decontamination process of nuclear power plant and tried to develop a optimum process. Because open literature of the decontamination process are rare, it is hard to obtain skills on decontamination of foreign country and it is necessarily to develop proper chemical decontamination process system in Korea. In this study, applicable possibility in chemical decontamination for reactor coolant pump (RCP) was investigated for the various stainless steels. The stainless steel (STS) 304 showed the best electrochemical properties for corrosion resistance and the lowest weight loss ratio in chemical decontamination process with immersion type than other materials. However, the pitting corrosion was generated in both STS 415 and STS 431 with the increasing numbers of cycle. The intergranular corrosion in STS 431 was sporadically observed. The sizes of their pitting corrosion also increased with increasing cycle numbers.

  • Polarization measurements were peformed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of copper ions and limiting current density in waste rinse water from copper electroplating processes. A newly designed cyclone type electrolyzer was tested to recover the copper powder. Synthetic solutions were prepared using analytical grade $CuSO_4$ to the desired waste water concentration and pH was adjusted with $H_2$$SO_4$. Electrowinning was peformed at room temperature and the solution was cycled with a pump. Results showed that more than 99 percent of Cu was recovered and the size of the recovered Cu powder ranges from 0.1 - $0.5\mu\textrm{m}$. The chemical composition of the Cu powder mainly consists of $Cu_2$O and Cu and can be easily reduced to pure Cu powder.

  • The performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell could be decreased due to coolant leaked from connection part. Micro pump was used to put small amount of coolant and investigate the effect on fuel cell. The stoichiometric ratio of hydrogen/air was 1.5/2.0, both side of gas was fully humidified, and current density of $400mA/cm^2$ was used as standard condition in this experiment. Constant current method was used to check performance recovery from coolant effect in 3 cell stack. The performance was recovered when coolant was injected in cathode side. On the other hand, the performance was not recovered when coolant was injected in anode side. Ethylene glycol could be converted to CO in oxidation process and cause poisoning effect on platinum catalyst or be adhered on GDL and cause gas diffusion block effect resulting performance decrease. Water with nitrogen gas was supplied in anode side to check performance recovery. Polarization curve, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to check performance, and gas chromatography was used to check coolant concentration. Constant current method was not enough in full recovery of performance. However, water injection method was proved good method in full recovery of performance.

  • We present the preparation and characteristics of liquid-phase sensors based on nano-porous silicon multilayer structures for determination of organic content in gasoline. The principle of the sensor is a determination of the cavity-resonant wavelength shift caused by refractive index change of the nano-porous silicon multilayer cavity due to the interaction with liquids. We use the transfer matrix method (TMM) for the design and prediction of characteristics of microcavity sensors based on nano-porous silicon multilayer structures. The preparation process of the nano-porous silicon microcavity is based on electrochemical etching of single-crystal silicon substrates, which can exactly control the porosity and thickness of the porous silicon layers. The basic characteristics of sensors obtained by experimental measurements of the different liquids with known refractive indices are in good agreement with simulation calculations. The reversibility of liquid-phase sensors is confirmed by fast complete evaporation of organic solvents using a low vacuum pump. The nano-porous silicon microcavity sensors can be used to determine different kinds of organic fuel mixtures such as bio-fuel (E5), A92 added ethanol and methanol of different concentrations up to 15%.

  • Glass micropipettes are widely used for drug injection in neurological studies. To enable these devices to monitor neural activity simultaneously with drug injection, an electrode such as Ag/AgCl must be located near or inserted into the glass micropipette to detect electrical signals in vivo. Here, we report carbon-nanotube-modified glass micropipettes (CNGs), which have excellent electrochemical properties such as low impedance and large electrochemical surface area suited for neural recording. In addition, using a standard pressure pump, CNGs can deliver drugs to the target region without bending. Because they are based on standard glass micropipettes, CNGs can readily be applied to traditional equipment, creating opportunities to monitor precisely the drug-injected area.

  • This paper investigated on anti-corrosion characteristic in chemical decontamination at extremely severe condition{process model-2) of stainless steels used with reactor coolant pump. The electrochemical properties of stainless steel{STS) 304 with the lapse qf cycle is better than those of STS 415 and STS 431. The STS 304 in process model-1 and process model-2 present the lowest weightloss ratio. The experiment results for STS 304, STS 415, and STS 431 in process model-2 solution, it was ascertained that weightloss ratio of process model-2 solution for process model-1 solution show 2..908, 2.572, and 2.370 times, respectively. The reason suggests that process model-2 is higher concentration of chemical and temperature compare to process model-1.

  • The energetics at the succinate:quinone oxidoreductase segment of V. alginolyticus was studied using a fluorescence quenching technique with inside-out membrane vesicles. A transient generation of the membrane potential (inside-positive) and ${\Delta}pH$ (inside-acidic) occurred in the presence of KCN and succinate when ubiquinone-1 (Q1) was added. The membrane potential (\Delta\psi$) generated by the succinate; quinone oxidoreductase segment was completely collapsed by the protonophore carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) and the membrane permeable anion $SCN^{-}$, whereas the ${\Delta}pH$ was completely collapsed by CCCP and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. From these results, it was concluded that the succinate: quinone oxidoreductase segment as well as quinol oxidase [1] in the respiratory chain of V. alginolyticus generated $H^{+}$ electrochemical potential.

  • The Gram-negative marine bacterium Marinomonas vaga, which requires 0.5 M NaCl concentration for optimal growth, is slightly halophilic. The growth of M vaga was highly resistant to the proton conductor, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) under alkaline pH conditions (pH 8.5) but very sensitive to CCCP under acidic pH conditions (pH 6.5). These results suggest that the respiratory chain-linked NADH oxidase system of M. vaga may lead to generation of a $Na^{+}$ electrochemical gradient. In order to examine the existence of $Na^{+}$-stimulated NADH oxidase in M. vaga, membrane fractions were prepared by the osmotic lysis method. The membrane-bound NADH oxidase oxidized both NADH and deamino-NADH as substrates and required $Na^{+}$ for maximum activity. The maximum activity of NADH oxidase was obtained at about pH 8.5 in the presence of 0.2 M NaCl. The site of $Na^{+}$-dependent activation in the NADH oxidase system was at the NADH:quinone oxidoreductase segment. The NADH oxidase and NADH:quinone oxidoreductase were very sensitive to the respiratory chain inhibitor, 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HQNO) in the presence of 0.2 M NaCl but highly resistant to another respiratory inhibitor, rotenone. Based on these findings, we conclude that M. vaga possesses the $Na^{+}$-dependent NADH:quinone oxidoreductase that may function as an electrogenic $Na^{+}$ pump.

  • Ammonia is drawing attention as carbon free fuel due to its ease of storage and transportation compared to hydrogen. This study suggests ammonia fueled solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system with electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC)-based recirculation. Performance of electrochemical hydrogen pump is based on the experimental data under varying hydrogen and nitrogen concentration. As a result, the suggested system shows 62.04% net electrical efficiency. The efficiency is 10.33% point higher compared to simple standalone SOFC system (51.71%), but 0.02% point lower compared to blower-based recirculation system (62.06%). Further improvement in the EHC-based SOFC recirculation system can be achieved with EHC performance improvement.

  • The objective of this study was to determine effects of temperatures and pH of sodium chloride solution with MgCl2 ions on corrosion resistance of duplex stainless-steel X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 (DSS) and Ti 6Al 2Nb1Ta1Mo (Ti). Effects of sodium chloride concentration on corrosion resistance were also studied. Corrosion behavior and pitting morphology of duplex stainless steel (DSS) and Ti alloys were evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that a decrease in pH significantly reduced the corrosion resistance of both alloys. Changes in chloride concentration and temperature had more substantial impact on corrosion behavior of DSS than on Ti alloys. Pitting corrosion was formed on DSS samples under all conditions, whereas crevice corrosion was developed on Ti samples with the presence of magnesium chloride at 90 ℃. In conclusion, magnesium chloride ions in an exceedingly strong acidity solution appear to interact with re-passivation process at the surface of these alloys and influence the resulting surface topography.
